Golf as a game has been around for a long time although theories about its exact origin differ a great deal. Some argue that the game originated from Netherlands where a game known as loenen was played from as early as 1297 to commemorate the capture of the assassin of Floris V the previous year. The game involves playing a ball with clubs  from the teeing ground into holes by a single or more strokes in accordance with the rules, these clubs and tees need to be carried around the golf course and that is where the use of a golf bag comes in.

A standard golf course may have anywhere between nine and 18 holes at different locations of the golf course. Each hole is accompanied by a teeing area set off by two markers, which act as boundaries for the legal tee area. To make the game more interesting and competitive, there is also the fair way, the rough and other hazards.

The most important section is the putting green. This area is usually surrounded by a fringe that has the pin also known as the flagstick and a cup. According to the nature of the game, a wide tract of land is necessary to accommodate the 18 courses. The courses may stretch to well over two kilometers and because the game employs the use of several clubs for different strokes, golf bags are handy in carrying the clubs around the course.

The movement of golfing equipment around the course can be very taxing for the player and this is the reason why golfers need an assistant. The assistant is known as a caddie. The work of a caddie is to assist the golfer in any way possible as long as the rules allow it, the assistance may include advising the golfer, choosing the clubs for him, carrying the golf travel bag or even placing the golf ball on the tee stand among other chores.

To make the game more thrilling and less strenuous on the player and his or her caddie, golf equipment manufacturers have designed more friendly means of carrying the golfing equipment such as the use of golf cart bags which are better designed to carry the clubs and other stuff more comfortably. They come in different shapes and others even have wheels to make it easy to pull along. Due to their more sophisticated design, they are more costly as compared to the traditional bag that has been in use by caddies in the golf course.

The golf game also has its own rating and tournament schedule and classification. To play the game many people start of as caddies and learn the features of the game little by little until they eventually get certification or even go as far as becoming professionals in the game. Golf as a game is not very widely played mainly because of the unavailability of golf courses since it requires a very wide area to setup a golf course as opposed to other games such as football, tennis or even volley ball or basketball.

The course is usually very neat and this means that many resources are necessary to setup and maintain golf courses on a day-to-day basis. It is perhaps for this reason that it is widely left to the affluent members of the community in most societies. The cost golfing equipment and other expenses like hiring a caddie are also prohibitive to many.
