Most experienced golfers will tell you of the importance of choosing the right set of clubs.

Although they may all look alike, no two golf clubs are the same. Neither are two golfers. We are all different in terms of height, weight, strength, and flexibility.

A golf clubhead needs to meet the ball squarely at impact in order to achieve the optimum in direction and ball flight. This can’t be achieved consistently with a club that doesn’t fit you properly. Some golfers attempt to adjust their swing to compensate. A better plan would be to fit the golf clubs to you, rather than trying to consistently adjust to the clubs.

Does this mean that you need to have a custom made set of clubs?

Not necessarily. Choosing the right club set and then making minor adjustments is all that most golfers need.

Off-the Rack Sets

Golf clubs are significantly different than they used to be years ago. They’re much easier to hit, and are more forgiving on miss hits.

Club manufacturers have been concentrating on technologies to improve ball striking abilities of most average golfers.

Standards set by the manufacturers ensure that off-the-rack sets will work for most golfers.

It’s important to properly choose the club shaft flexibility and swing weight.

A golfer who is physically strong should use a shaft which is more on the stiff side. And swing weight should be a little heavier than medium.

If you’re not so strong, a more flexible shaft with a lighter swing weight will perform better.

Clubs for ladies and seniors are typically more flexible and lighter as well.

Length and Lie of the Club

A driver length is typically 43 inches. The distance between your hands on the club and the ground is what determines your length and lie.

The leading edge of the clubhead, (bottom front), needs to be even at time of impact with the ball. If the toe of the clubface is too high or low the golfer will need to adjust his or her swing in order to achieve proper direction and ball flight. It’s almost impossible to achieve consistent ball striking this way.

Get Professional Advice

Have a professional measure your swing speed, and determine the proper length and lie for you. This process is a simple matter of you hitting some golf balls into a net or simulator while the professional records your stats.

Try several clubs to determine the ones that fit best.

Most quality golf stores will perform this service free of charge if you’re making a purchase from them. Another option is to attend a golf demo day. Many of the manufacurers have representatives that tour the country and facilitate a demo day. This is a great place to try out several different clubs from various manufacurers.

Consistency is Key

Selecting properly fitted clubs will give you the confidence of consitent performance. Consistentcy in your golf swing is the next step.

The ability to repeat the way you hit the golf ball over and over again is key to game improvement. Hitting each club the same way each time will provide you with a consistent distance and ball flight for each club.

Knowing, not guessing, how far, and in what direction the ball will fly for each club before you take the shot is a big advantage in beginning to manage your game toward significant improvement.
