Golf Course is a shockwave game with good graphics and challenging game play even if you only play at the amateur level. You get a mini-map of the golf course so you know where you are as well as a fuller view of the green in front of you.

The mouse selects the direction you want to hit the ball in. Holding down the mouse button and dragging selects the power. It sounds simple but this is a tough course with plenty of rough to get lost in. You need to play a few rounds before you can shoot it with the pros.

Desert Golf: A free Candystand Golf Game

This is similar to Golf Course above but the course is less green and the game play a little easier. The controls are pretty clever and it’s a good idea to read the detailed instructions on how to play. I didn’t do that at first and got nowhere. I was into my second round before I realized why I was slicing so many shots- you need to time the hit just right. To do this keep a close eye on the swing wheel at the top of the screen . A perfectly straight shot is achieved by clicking at the exact point on the lowest point on the Swing Wheel. An early click yields a hooked shot while a late click causes a slice to occur

Pro Tour Golf

This is not a mouse controlled game- instead you use the space bar to control the swing and it’s power. Arrow keys move the point of view. A and Z change the club you use for better distance control.

This plays in a higher resolution than the 2 games above and the graphics are really good, There are no ads to distract you which is a big plus. There is an introductory vid of the hole you are going to play then you are into the action. When you pan round to see where you are, your golfer shuffles round giving it a very realistic feel. I sometimes forget that it’s a game and start shouting at the golfer guy when he misses (well. it couldn't have been me!).

The controls are simple to use (better than a mouse once you get used to them) and this game comes highly recommended. A knock out feature, is that you chose which part of the ball to hit, so spin comes into play. You can stop the ball short when it lands or send it scooting forward. At last there is a game that gives you full control of where the ball is going- once you have all the skills!

Just keep that score down and you might even win a prize.

Cat and Arrow Golf

This may not even look like a golf game at first but it plays like one. Your little player guy has a bow and arrow and to get around the course you have to fire the arrow towards the hole- well its not actually a hole, its more like a target. Anyway, you fire the arrow then get a score for how many times it takes to reach the target.

Highly addictive, a top recommendation for anyone who likes out of the ordinary games.

Midi Golf Game

This is a very simple game but fun. There are no complex graphics here but the controls are simple and easy to grasp so you can master the game pretty quickly and then just relax and play. I got pretty hooked. One warning – if you hit the ball too hard it will ricochet all over the screen and there are plenty of bunkers to trap you and water to sink in.

This is a simple putting game but addictive, infuriating and fun. You need to get the direction of your shot just right to get the ball in the hole. I reckon I managed to sink 1 in 5 balls the first time I tried. Now, of course, I sink them all (almost).

Verti Golf 1 and 2

The full version of this game is not free but the demo has 5 holes and makes for a fun time.

You get to play some miniature golf high up in the canyons. The interactive tutorial (on the game menu) is worth reading before you start.

The graphics are cool and there are many cruel obstacles with plenty of tubes, ramps and spinning metal to frustrate and delight. It really does feel as you are suspended high above the Grand Canyon and you never know where the ball will go.

Will you buy the full game? I was tempted.

Mousebreaker PitchnPutt

Some people love the mousebreaker golf games. Other people go crazy playing them. I am one of the kind that wants to bite my own mouse after five minutes on a mousebreaker course.

The controls for this 2D game are simple enough. You hit the space bar once to wind up the power for the shot, hit again when you have reached the power level you want then one more time to hit the ball. The problem is you can't see the hole. They tell you how far the hole is and even give you hints but its not the same as actually seeing it.

This game is included in case you like these kinds of controls or have a lot of patience to learn a golf game. If you end up with teeth marks in your mouse don't blame me!
