Golf Tips for Beginners to Help you Choose the Essential Golf Accessories for Your Game
Golf Bags, Golf Carts, And Golf Tees
In the golf tips for beginners - golf equipment articles, I showed you the importance of choosing the correct golf equipment for your game and physical size. In the golf accessories department, we will look at the important accessories you will need to help you with your round of golf. Golf accessories will not make you play golf any better but they are necessary, sometimes indispensable, items that you will need.
The GOLF BAG
The golf bag is an essential golf accessory to hold all your golf clubs, balls, tees, and whatever else you may need for a round of golf. There are several different types of golf bag, each one for a specific use. The other factors to consider when choosing a golf bag are more of a personal choice. They could be the brand that you like, the color, or other personalization options. First, let's look at the different types of golf bags and their uses.
Carry Golf Bags
Carry golf bags also include pencil bags and other lightweight bags suitable for travel. As the name suggests, carry bags are designed to be carried around the golf course and so are slim and light. They can carry up to 14 clubs plus they have pockets for golf balls, tees, waterproofs, and a few other items.
Pencil golf bags are even slimmer and lighter yet can still carry up to 10 or 12 clubs. These are the bags that most beginners start out with as they are more than adequate and quite cheap. As they are made from a lightweight material, they are not as waterproof as other bags and so not so good for rainy days.
Travel golf bag covers are designed to be used while on a golf break or holiday. Your normal golf bag and clubs goes inside the travel bag for protection. They use either hard or soft cases; the hard one especially useful for checking the bag onto an airplane. The soft cased version is more useful for fitting in the back of a car but still offers the protection for traveling.
Another type is the travel golf bag which is an all in one travel and course bag. These bags are perfect for golfers that are frequent travellers. Many feature hardcase club protection, the ability to lock closed the bag, padded hard tops, in-line skate wheels for easy rolling, and many other options. Most are big enough to hold 14 clubs and all the rest of the golf accessories you need.
Stand Bags
The stand golf bag is almost identical to the standard carry golf bag, except that it has a stand. The stand folds out when you rest the bag on the ground so that the bag stands upright. This makes it easier to take out your clubs and it also means that your bag will not get dirty as only the base touches the ground.
There are many different prices and qualities of stand bags. Make sure to choose one that has a sturdy stand and that it is well positioned so that the bag is stable when standing up. You will generally pay more for a stand bag than a carry bag, but the extra feature of the stand is well worth the extra cost.
Cart Bag
A cart golf bag is normally bigger than a stand bag and is designed to fit on a push trolley / cart or on an electric trolley / cart. With the extra size you get a lot more pockets and pouches to store all your golf equipment and other items that you find are necessary for a day out on the golf course.
The cart bag is usually more rigid that the carry bag and therefore more hardwearing. They also offer a higher level of waterproofing than the carry bag or stand bag. When it is raining, the golfer will have the umbrella over themselves with the trolley being pushed in front and under the rain. The cart bag will be more expensive than the stand bag but indispensable for the golfer who wants to use a trolley.
Staff Bag
The staff bag, sometimes called a Tour Bag, is the biggest and heaviest of all the golf bags. These bags are used by tour professionals, or more correctly, their caddies. When you watch PGA golf, you will notice just how big and heavy they are. They are designed to carry a large amount of golf equipment and whatever else a tour pro might need to carry around.
As you can imagine, the staff bags are the most expensive of all the golf bags. Some golfers use them on their trolleys or buggies because they like to have the extra storage option. However, I wouldn't recommend them if you plan to use them like the caddies - as a carry bag - as they are really too heavy to carry and play golf for 18 holes.
The Options For Buying Golf Bags
There are now dozens of golf bag manufacturers and literally hundreds of styles and colors to choose from. It is a good idea to shop on line as you can see at a glance all the different options and prices. Talking of prices, you will find that on line golf stores can generally offer golf equipment cheaper than physical stores.
For Choice And Price
When it comes to price, there are three companies that all have low prices on golf bags. Depending on which brand and type of bag you choose, will depend which of the three has the lowest price. The three companies are ScoreLow, GolfBalls, and TheGolfWarehouse.
It is worthwhile to shop around between these three to see who has the lowest price for a specific golf bag.
For choice, ScoreLow has the most amount of golf bags in total, GolfBalls and TheGolfWarehouse have more brands in cart bags and stand bags, and have the most amount of brands in staff bags, women's bags, carry bags, and a great selection of travel bags and travel covers.
Team Logo Golf Bags & Personalized Golf Bags
For those of you who like to show off your favorite team or would like to personalize your golf bags, here are the best options: ScoreLow offer Datrek golf bags for both their NFL and Collegiate team logo golf bags. These bags have individual full length dividers to separate each club and an insulated cooler pocket to store your favorite drinks. They offer a choice of 31 NFL team logos and up to 70 collegiate logos.
For personalized golf bags, GolfBalls are the leader in their field. You have a choice between Nike, Callaway, and TaylorMade golf bags and you can choose various bag colors and two lines of embroidered text.
Golf Bags On Sale & Final Clearance
You will always get the lowest prices from the above companies for golf bags, but for even more savings, TheGolfWarehouse have a section for golf bags on sale and final clearance golf bags. You can pick up a bargain priced golf bag for under $100 and sometimes as low as $50 for brands such as Datrek, Adams Golf, Ogio, and TaylorMade.
Summary
As you can see from these golf tips for beginners on golf bags, there are different types of golf bags for different situations. If you plan on carrying your bag, I would go for a stand bag for the reason that you will be able to maintain your bag in good condition for longer by having it off the ground on its stand. If you plan on buying a golf cart then go for a cart bag that offers all the features that you require; you can get a bigger bag with more storage pockets as you will have the benefit of the cart.
GOLF CARTS
If you plan to buy a cart bag or even a staff bag, then you will need a golf cart. There are many different options of golf carts today; push, pull, electric, two-wheel, or three wheel. There are also differences in the materials used in their construction and their weights.
Push / Pull Golf Carts
The manual variety of golf carts or trolleys now come in two versions: The traditional cart with two wheels which you pull behind you, and the newer three-wheeled carts that you can either pull or push in front of you.
The two wheeled cart still tends to have narrower tires, sometimes of solid rubber, which can damage the golf course in soggy conditions. Although, nowadays the wheels tend to be wider and made of flat plastic. They are highly maneuverable though and cost less than the three wheeled carts.
The three wheeled carts come with air filled tires, which don't cause any damage to the course. They are more stable than the two-wheeled carts and yet are still maneuverable. They also give you the option of pulling them or pushing them.
Many three-wheeled carts have many optional extras that you can add on. For example, with the Sun Mountain Speed Cart you can add adjustable bag brackets, accessories tray with magnetic lid, bungee score card holder, updated pencil, tee and ball holders. It even has a mount to hold an open umbrella for shelter from sun or rain showers.
Electric Golf Carts
The electric golf carts are a welcome addition to the golf cart family, especially for the older golfers. All the electric golf carts have three wheels making them an effortless means of transporting your golf bag and clubs around, while still giving the golfer the exercise of walking the 18 holes.
Make sure to learn all about the battery before buying one though. You will want to know how long the battery charge will last, as you don't want to end up pushing an electric cart with a dead battery - they are very heavy. You will also want to know the battery lifespan, how long it takes to charge up, and other maintenance issues.
One thing you will want to investigate before buying any of the different types of golf carts is how small it is when folded down. After all, you will have to fit them into your car, as well as your golf clubs. Also, with the electric carts, you will have to see if you can manage to lift the folded cart into your car, as they can be heavy.
One other consideration is the speed control; some are quite basic with just an on / off switch. If you have trouble keeping up with the cart, you should consider a variable speed cart. Some carts even come with a remote control for sending the cart around the green or off to one side when you go to take your shot.
Shopping For Golf Carts
Not many online golf stores stock a large choice of golf carts, the exception being In The Hole Golf.
As two wheel pull golf carts are becoming less popular, they are getting very difficult to find, but there is one available at InTheHoleGolf. When it comes to three wheel push golf carts you will find at least 12 different models from ClicGear, Sun Mountain, Bag Boy, and Hummer with prices starting under $100.
Finally, there are 14 different models of electric golf carts from Sun Mountain, Bag Boy, and Hawk. Prices for electric carts start at under $500 and go up to just over $1000.
Summary
These golf tips for beginners on choosing a golf cart will obviously only apply to golfers who want a cart bag or even a staff bag. Remember to choose your golf cart wisely: Will it fold up and fit in my car? Will the battery last a whole round of golf? Should I go for a two-wheeled cart or a three-wheeled cart? How much does the cart weigh and can I lift it into my car? These are just some of the questions you need to ask yourself before deciding on a golf cart.
GOLF TEES
The last essential item of golf accessories you will need are the golf tees. Now you may think that a tee is just a tee and that was correct several years ago. Nowadays there are dozens of styles of golf tees to choose from. Let's have a look at a few of the options when choosing your golf tees.
Traditional Golf Tees
Traditional golf tees are made of wood or sometimes plastic and come in dozens of different colors. These are the tees that everyone knows and uses. They come in three lengths, depending on what club you are using to tee-off with. With the driver you could use the longest tee - 3 ¼ inch, with a 3 or 5 wood - 2 ¾ inch, and with an iron - 2 1/8 inch. You should always have a selection of the three sizes of these traditional tees in your bag.
Brush Tees
Brush tees have flexible synthetic bristles where you place your golf ball. They say that when driving off, the brush tees create a feeling of driving the ball off the air because the bristles bend on impact. These bristles provide significantly less resistance which produces longer and straighter drives: Up to 7 additional yards, according to the manufacturer.
They come in various lengths; 3-wood, driver, oversize, and XLT. Of course, they are more expensive than traditional tees, but if they do indeed add distance to your drives, they may well be worth the extra expense.
Rip Tees
Rip tees are similar to brush tees in that they have soft flexible tips that allow the ball to take off faster and fly further. This system prevents the ball from creating friction against the traditional tees concave surface.
The difference with rip tees is that they come in only one size. This is because they are height adjustable; you snap them onto your normal tees and adjust the height of the tee. They are also cheaper than brush tees but still more expensive than traditional tees.
Step Down Golf Tees
Step down golf tees are closer to the traditional tees in design. They are made from premium hardwood and available in white or natural wood color. As the name applies, they have a step at a certain height on the tee. This enables you to take the guess-work out of tee height setting which results in more confident and consistent drives.
Step down tees come in three heights the same as the traditional tees; 3 ¼ inch, 2 ¾ inch, and 2 1/8 inch. Again, these are a bit more expensive than traditional tees, but for the beginner golfer, they offer an easy way to get a consistent height for teeing off.
Summary
There are many more different speciality tees on the market, but for most golfers, the traditional tee is more than sufficient. If you want to check out the number one online seller of golf tees then visit GolfTees.
They specialize in golf tees; you can buy anywhere from bags of 25 tees up to wholesale bulk quantities of thousands of tees. You can also order personalized golf tees in 24 different colors and 4 different sizes. Check out all their range of speciality tees as well, there is sure to be something that catches your eye.
