The Heart of a Punk

Punk rock sometimes gets a bad rap. With three chords down on the guitar, a simple but fast drum beat, someone to quickly pluck away at a bass guitar and some hostile lyrics, you can form a punk band. With this in mind, one may think that all punk bands are full of no-talent musician wannabes. Well, maybe if you compare them to the greats like John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Elton John and Bob Dylan punk rockers do not quite measure up to that level.

Nevertheless, good music does not have to mean a musical masterpiece. It just takes a good hook, lyrics that move you in some way and a band that performs their songs with heart. Here are some classic punk songs from bands that meet this criteria.

Punk made 80s music as fun and soulful as it was. I prefer soulful music on 3-cords than 10 cords worth of boring any day!

Back in the 80's I saw the Ramones a number of times. Always a great show. It's a tradgedy what happened to them all so young. I saw the NY Dolls in 1980. It was a weird show. I thought David Johansen was strange then, until he started pulling that Buster Pointdexter crap. Oh well. Thanks for the flashback.

Damn Rockinjoe!!! I wish I would have seen The Ramones! I love that band!!! Have you checked out my hub on documentaries? One movie on the list is a doc on The Ramones called End of the Century. One of the best rock docs I have ever seen. Have you seen it?

I just checked out your hub. I haven't seen End of the Century, yet, but I definitely will. I did see a show a year or so ago (VH1, maybe) about the Ramones and the infamous fights between Joey and Johnny. I heard they didn't get to kiss and make up before Joey died. What a shame. They were a big part of my late teens and early 20's. Classic music.

The first time I saw them, I was with this chick who got into a fist fight with another girl in front of the stage. Me and the other girl's boyfriend had to pull them apart. My girl had two broken ribs and I had a split lip before the night was over. We stayed for the whole show and then I drove her to the hospital.

The hazards of being within 20 feet of the Ramones.

Great hub. I finally started getting mail from Hubpages, so I'll be able to keep up with your stuff a lot more.

That sounds like the perfect punk rock show to me!

When you see End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones you will get the whole background of why Joey and Johnny had a falling out. Very dramatic. Be sure to check that movie out! It is suprisingly touching and engrossing.

Great selection of songs. I particularly love the Stooges and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is one of my all time favorites.

I hate to be one of those guys who picks lists apart and complains about who you left off, but I can't believe you didn't include this cover of the Ramone's "We're a Happy Family": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsKO_r76kfQ
