Good Pet Roaches
78Cockroaches are not for every person, but they can become good pets. They are often thought of as pests...which they happen to be,but not all species are invasive pests. They are from tropical regions so escaped roaches will not reproduce if they become lost.Even in warmer parts of the US,they cannot survive for too long since they are not adapted to that environment. There are many species available in the pet trade that can be easily obtained through the mail.
Hissing Cockroach
The Madagascar Hissing Cockroach and many other species of hissing cockroaches are the most sought after due to their hissing behavior. They get around 3 inches in length. They are easily bred by putting a ratio of 1 male to two females. The males have larger pointier head bumps, while the females have smooth heads bumps. They can thrive on a diet of various fruits and nutritious vegetables with cuttle bone for calcium.A temperature of 70 to 80 degrees is required for healthy shells and digestion. They have a longevity of 3 or more years. They are good burrowers so a few inches of coco substrate will do them well.A ten gallon tank should be used to house a pair or two.Daily misting brings them out if you would like them out to play with. They are social so a small same-sexed group is ideal.A mixed-sex group will rapidly produce live young.
Death's Head Cockroach
These are a winged species. They are commonly found at feeder shops because they are very nutritious and meaty.A temperature at the mid 70s is ideal. They also live in small groups and are prolific breeders.A male can grow two inches so a five gallon tank a pair will work out incredibly.A diet of plant matter, calcium, and a dead cricket will work out great for them.A good diet enhances their color from being drab brown to orange. An inch of substrate will be okay and a few branches for climbing are necessary.Include a tank lid.Spray daily to encourage them to come out and eat.
Death's Head Hybrid
These are interesting pets. They are the hybrid of the B. craniifer and B. fusca. They are a lot more common than the true(B. craniifer) and are not sterile so they do dilute the true species. They look extremely similar with size and color(sometimes)being the key difference. These need more space with 10 gallons a pair. They are also social, but sometimes more carniverous so a shedding roach may be eaten.Care is similar to the pure species(above).
Giant Cockroaches
Giant roaches are known for their beauty and size. They can reach lengths of 3 to 4 inches long. They need a 15 gallon space for every pair and more room to breed.75 degrees is ideal for breeding and daily sunning. They love being misted twice daily.Provide a lid and climbing branches.Their diet is mostly vegetarian.
