Prepare envelopes for all the things that are necessary

People who are smart about money use envelopes to manage their finances.  They always put the bills with the money in the envelope ready for the payment.  It is advisable for single parents to keep their bills up to date by putting all payments in envelopes and stacking them in safe places so that they will not miss any bill every time the payment is due.

Do not procrastinate

Procrastination is one of the negative manners that need to be avoided.  Once the bills are delivered to your door, you have to allot the budget and seal the envelope.  The problem with the budget comes once you start postponing payments for bills.  If you have the money, why not pay as soon as possible?  You are going to pay the bills anyway and whatever you do will affect the smooth flow of the payment.

If you are on a tight budget, the best advice is to lessen on things that are not a necessity for the family.  Clothes need not have a regular budget.  You could live without all those beautiful clothes if you cannot afford them.  You could choose the cheaper yet trendy clothes that you love to wear and you will look good just the same.  If your children love going out to shop for things they like and enjoy going to dinners then tell them that your budget does not allow them to go out often.  Share your problems with your children so that you will be able to cope with the crisis.

Always set aside an amount for your savings

No matter what happens, you should always set aside an amount for your monthly savings.  It always pays to have savings for emergency matters.  Nowadays when economic crisis has affected everybody, you cannot assume that someone is going to help you out if emergency arises.  It is always best to have savings.  This is one way of having self-discipline.  Once you have planned your budget, include your monthly savings.  A few dollars saved a month will help you a lot in the moment of need.
