Good ol' Kyphosis of the Spine

Yes it is very painful I'm afraid...

Kyphosis of the spine is a back issue that causes more pain than anything else because of how the spine is shaped.  Unlike scoliosis, Kyphosis curves the spine in an ‘S’ shape, protruding the spine outwards not to the side or anything like that.  It is also known described as hunchback, yes like good old’ Quasimodo.  But it is very real, and it is very painful in ways, especially if you are in a car accident or a ride and you slam back against the protruding part of your spine.

A great website about Kyphosis is http://www.spineuniverse.com/article/kyphosis-4060.html

They explain all of the different Kyphosis as well as describe it in great detail.  There are a few ways of correcting Kyphosis; the most extreme is surgery where they sadly have to put a metal rod down your spine to correct it.  The not extreme way is physical therapy and back exercises.  Even going to a chiropractor can help some but it would mostly be doing the back exercises on your own.  There are also drugs and medication that can help out with the pain that is caused by Kyphosis and of course if you the extreme surgery way.  There is a brace you can have but before the doctor would recommend this for Scheuermann’s Kyphosis, he or she will take in several factors that are stated on the website, which will also help you decide if it is the right path yourself.  You should look at all possibilities before deciding which path you wish to take, the bracing, physical therapy or surgery, but always know that your friend drugs will be there to help with the pain.

Another great pain reliever is a nice hot bath mixed with Epsom salt; the salt helping relieve the tension in your muscles as well as relieve stress pain.  If you are ever in a car accident and you do have any kind of Kyphosis, your best bet would be to see a chiropractor for a while and let him/her set your back and neck and also soak in an Epsom salt bath.  Also always consult your doctor on what could be the best path to take in helping yourself relieve the pain in your spine forever.

I am still battling this one because I am a suffer of Primary Structural Kyphosis or also known as Scheuermann’s Kyphosis.  I do have back exercises that I am supposed to do every day but I haven’t really because I am tired of always having to do them, always in pain afterwards.  Even trying to stand up straight for maybe an hour or two.  It’s an ongoing pain in the back and an ongoing struggle for me.  I can go on rides but I have to be careful because of like what I had stated before, the protruding part of my spine does and will hit hard against the seat.  I have been in two car accidents and that resulted in back pain, whip lash, and chiropractic visits to help, with MANY Epsom salt baths.  I try to keep up on the back exercises because I want to stop having to do back exercises and I want to stop the constant pain.  I want my neck to stop being pushed forward because of the spine deformation, and I want to be able to stand up straight.  But I am afraid of going the surgery route because it sounds too painful…and there are two but the most severe is the metal rod down the spine.  Both painful and both scary but I am reading more about both and wondering what will be best for me since I am tired of dealing with a crooked pain filled spine every day of my life.

Back pain is very bothersome I know. I have spina bifida occulta and it just gets worse the older I get, and too many CT/Scans have destroyed nerves and given me bone loss so the back is degenerating. I empathize with you.

Hi Crazdwriter. I love your name by the way. I am really sorry to hear about your back pain. I too suffer from back pain as ralwas does. I had to have surgery and it is scary. I however had no choice. I was so much better right after surgery and still am today. I have exercises to do but I slack off and I am only hurting myself. I would rather write. In have enjoyed your hubs and sending them out. That is a big help when it is done. I don't know how many people know that. PPain especially when constant can be a real deterrant to doing something you truly enjoy. Exercise and write then repeat every day. Writers orders. Smile
