If you know anything about university life, you're likely aware of the "poor college student" stereotype, and unfortunately, this stereotype may be more than just a cliché.  With tuition and living costs increasing, many college students find themselves in need of extra cash. However, they have trouble finding a job that works around their busy schedules and is exciting enough to keep them interested in going to work.  Finding part-time employment during college is possible, though. Here, you will find a list of the top places for college students to be employed, as well as places that college students should consider staying away from.

1. Staples

Not only does Staples typically look for college-aged students to work for them, but they are also flexible when it comes to working around students' schedules. Because most stores are open only until 9 p.m., working for Staples will not involve late nights that could take away from school work and sleep and therefore lead to lower grades.  Plus, the focus on technology makes working for Staples appealing to the college crowd.

2. Applebees

Restaurants are typically busiest during evenings and on weekends, which are the times when college students are likely to be free from class.  And, because other college students are known to go out to eat to socialize, being  a waiter or waitiress is a great way to meet new people.  In addition, the tips you'll collect at work provide you with instant cash to pay for emergency expenses.

3.American Eagle Outfitters

Most stores are open during mall hours, which are typically 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., so you wont be likely to work late nights. Working at AEO is also another opportunity to meet new people who go to your school. And, you'll score discounts on merchandise from the store, so you'll save money on clothing expenses as well!

While these three places may provide good opportunities for those in college, other places aren't so student-friendly. Below are some places you may not want to apply.

1. Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, so you may find yourself working several late nights a week if you are hired by Wal-Mart. In addition, Wal-Mart employees generally work long hours, leaving you with little time to complete school work or have a social life.

2. Taco Bell

College students should think twice before applying at a fast food place such as Taco Bell. Wendy's, Burger King, McDonald's, and other fast food chains are not the best job options for college students either. Most fast food chains are opened until 1 a.m. or later, and some are even opened 24 hours a day.  With these hours, its hard to work in fast food and find time to sleep and study. In addition, fast food jobs are typically starter jobs for high school students who do not have many options when it comes to working, and they do not provide the valuable experience that other jobs may provide.

The Bottom Line: If you're searching for a job during college, be sure you're applying for jobs that actually interest you;  you don't want to dread going to work every day. In addition, it's important that the places you are applying will be willing to work around your busy schedule. And, it doesn't hurt if the job you work during college provides experience that will help you in your future career.
