Google Adwords: My Keyword Tool Experiment

I have recently started publishing on HubPages and through my reading of various articles, time spent on the forums, and visiting other websites, I have discovered the Google Adwords Keyword Tool.  I have also discovered how to use it.  I won’t delve into that here as there are plenty of other articles that contain this information and do a very good job of explanation.

Instead, what I would like to do is explain an experiment that I will be trying.  Using the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, I have been able to identify 101 keywords and keyword phrases in 10 different categories that have greater than 50,000 searches each month and pay greater than $10.00 per click.  This data was researched in June 2009.  Of course, the CPC is dynamic as is the interest in a particular keyword and topic.  But I think that the ability to gather and use this information is what is most important.

Now to the experiment:  I plan on using these keywords and writing 10 articles in several of the niches to see if my Adsense earnings are positively affected.  The first step will be to provide some very useful information in the article, possibly with a unique twist.  The article may be strictly informative; it could compare and contrast several options; it might even be a review on a particular product or service.  The most important point is that it be useful for readers and unique.

The next step will be to develop some traffic.  I have my own blog and write there occasionally.  This could provide some useful backlinks.  I have recently joined twitter and am working on developing a following, although it seems to be going somewhat slowly.  I already participate in a few forums and would likely see some traffic from there as well.  It might be difficult to compete in some of the larger keyword niches on the search engines.  I am still learning about search engine optimization and don’t fully have a handle on this and page rank values.  But, I am getting about 20% of my traffic from search engines already so something positive is happening.

I am curious to see how this will affect my overall Adsense earnings.  I certainly don’t think it will hurt even if it doesn’t help.  Besides, now I have an interesting project to work on and a nice data set of keywords that can make an article as well.  I will be sure to keep everyone updated on the results of my experiment.  Needless to say, I will probably not see any results for several months, but I should be able to tell if I am getting a few higher value clicks.

How did you identify these keywords? Did you merely type in a phrase and see the cpc and total number of searches or did you do something else? As I have loads of trouble coming up with keywords which are this good!

Bristol,

I assume you are interested and so I will likely write a hub on my exact procedure for obtaining the keywords. I will also, in that same hub, post the list of main categories and the individual keywords. It has taken approximately 4 hours of research, start to finish, to create the list. Right now I am working on a hub based upon one of the keywords. Then it becomes a matter of driving traffic. I can't control who clicks what, but if I can write something interesting and useful and then work on traffic generation, I hope it may pay off.

Thanks for that Kidgas. I am managing to get plenty of traffic to my hubs in the short time I have been here, but the value of my clicks are rarely the levels that many people claim as possible. Such a hub would be very useful for myself and I am sure many other people. I recommend though that if you do have certain keywords you plan to target don't include them or you may end up giving away your secrets and ending up having additional competition for certain keywords! If you are doing categories just give one or two examples for each category would be what I would advise, but obviously it is up to you.

I will certainly keep you updated, nicomp.

Bristol, I agree that I will keep some of the better words for myself although the information is certainly obtainable off the internet but does take some amount of work to gather.
