Through its open source Chromium project, Google has unveiled a system
for synchronizing data that is integrated directly within the browser.
As a first step, the system will be designed to transfer favorites but
should take care of other types of data by the browser suite. In a
message posted on the official discussion group, the developer Tim
Steele announced that the technology will be integrated within Chromium
as early as next week and the month of August for a new update to
Google Chrome.
This system of immediate sync (push) requires the establishment of
an architecture at both the software on Google's servers. Tim Steele
explained that the data will be automatically synchronized with the
user account from Google and thoughtful on other machines. Google
should also make available a web page from which the user can find all
his favorites. Data transfer is via the XMPP protocol integrated with
GTalk, they are also the servers of instant messaging client that will
support synchronization. For now, the technology should be implemented
within the browser only works with Windows and Linux. The test period
should also allow to evaluate the uses and needs on the server side.
Google already offers bookmarlet to add a web page in their
Favorites Google Bookmarks, Firefox users can take advantage of several
extensions dedicated. With its technology Weave, Mozilla also offers a
solution to synchronize bookmarks between multiple machines, but also
on its mobile browser Fennec. Note that there are also other
alternative services such as Delicious and Xmark (formerly Foxmarks).
It remains to know more precisely what additional data will be
reflected on several machines (cookies, IDs, passwords ...)
