Cool Things to See Using Google Earth
94
I admit it. I'm hooked.
I'm hooked on virtual traveling with Google Earth. This week's Hub Mob Topic gave me just the opportunity to share my hobby with you again by giving you more cool things to see or experience for yourself on Google Earth.
I could spend hours picking out places to visit and zooming in to see all the intricacies of each city. My first hub about Google Earthhas been very popular here at HubPages. Another hub about Crop Circles seen on Google Earth is popular as well. I have since written at least a half dozen Google Earth hubs that you can find in the links below. If you like this one, you'll love them as well.
I was first introduced to Google Earth by my husband while he was still living in England before we were married. We would talk on Skype and each look up the same location on Google Earth. It was like we were experiencing and visiting the same place at the same time even though we were miles apart. It was a magical experience visiting the pyramids and Niagara Falls together.
Now, I sit and look up places I've never seen, zoom in, and wander around. It is such a great way to visit places without leaving the comfort of your chair. It's easy to download and is very user-friendly. You simply type in the location you want to see and the globe spins and zooms right to the location you've chosen. You can then easily maneuver around zooming in further. There are 3d options and millions of photographs to click on.

I am going to Google Earth now, this is so cool. Great Great
dori
You live 15 minutes from Bill Gates, Candie? Wow....I'm impressed. But, why are you boating by his house at night peeking in his windows watching him swim?
Fortunerep-you'll love Google Earth, I promise! Be sure to click on the other two hubs I mention at the top of this one. I have lots more links there. I'm hoping I haven't duplicated anything, but it's been awhile since I wrote the other two. The things you can see are incredible! Be sure to report back and let me know how you enjoyed it!
haha now I can come to America!!
Indeed you can, Hawkesdream! And without the 10 hr flight! You can be here in seconds! Come on over!
The street view is amazing too. Lots of people inadvertently got "snapped" for posterity! One English village drove the camera cars out!
That's funny Gypsy Willow!
Wow! Thanks KCC for all the info. I am definitely going to Google Earth. Can hardly wait!
You'll have tons of fun, alekhouse! I'd love to hear about all the places you go!
KCC - You would have to see what they wear when they swim to appreciate the view!
LOL......I have all sorts of images running around in my head, Candie! You are quite the mischievious one, aren't you?! I think we should all come to your place and let you take us in a boat at night by Bill's house so we ALL can see! Got any pics? They could be worth something! LOL
KCC, I LOVE google earth! Especially for checking out directions - much better than just mapquest for figuring out where I need to go. I'll be back to finish watching these videos--I don't get to play as much as I'd like since I can't install google earth on my work computer :-)
That's it Dineane! It's like mapquest come alive. It's not just someone's drawing of how things are laid out. You can actually see where everything is (providing trees don't obstruct the view).
Wow this is fantastic. I'm going to check this out. Thanks KCC!:)
Thanks Dayzeebee, hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Google are taking over the world aren't they?. It is not always up to date though. Our road still showed our temporary homes, caravans, six months after they had gone. I do love the Grand Canyon etc side of it. Great hub.
Thanks Ethel. Yes, they are constantly updating it. It takes time to rephotograph the whole earth though. I cannot even see my area as the whole square is blurry. Some spots are crystal clear and you can make out people, but then some are like mine where they are a big blurr. We think some of our area's problem is the close proximity we were to ex-President Bush's house while he was in office. Now that he's gone, we're hoping they will update us.
Cool, I need to try it :)
Thanks for stopping by Princessa! It definitely a fun toy! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Great hub - and it is indeed an amazing bit of kit.
Thanks LG! It's a great toy for all ages!
Excuse me while I download Google Earth. Thanks for a great hub!
You'll never be the same, William! There are so many things to see! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, that was great. I clicked on the list of amusement parts and the photograph of Sea World showed Shamu in mid jump over the water!
I must say some of the images were very insightful. I was skeptical of this but now I'd have to say you've got me interested!
Thanks Jeniferr! I had no idea how crystal clear some of the images were until I started playing around with it. It's fun to see all sorts of things you'd never imagine being able to see any other way. Download it, and have fun with it!
Interesting read. I have to admit that I am a late adoptor of google earth (which is a shame because I am a trained geographer). But it is definitely a very potent tool. I am sure there will be a lot of innovations/new tools around google earth in the years to come.
I agree, Euro-pen! I think we are sitting at the edge of something really big as they discover new and innovative ways to utilize the current system. The future looks bright from here! Thanks for stopping by!
I use integrated Google Maps, the free version of Earth, in my website. I wanted to bring alive the idea of the country of origin of consumer goods.
What's interesting to me is that we can use this technology free for our own purposes. Imagine having to buy in this capability even ten years ago. You'd have needed a lot of investment!
good hub, i have enjoyed google earth as well, it is very addictive
It's crazy, isn't it Graham? It's amazing how all this technology and fun is FREE! And you're right, years ago it would have been too costly for the average user to buy something that would do a 1/10th of what Google Earth does for free today. Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks Stuart! You're addicted too, huh? :) Thanks for stopping by!
Google Earth is a fun hobby. I use it all the time to plan out my next camping or climbing trip.
Camping Dan, that is a WONDERFUL use for Google Earth! Thank you for adding that comment! It's a great way to get a lay of the land in case you get lost later too. Perhaps you'll recognize things having seen them first on Google Earth.
Thank you so much for sharing this...I've been sitting too long just looking at the youtube videos you posted, I have to try this for myself.
Oh Gretchel! You'll have a blast! You'll get hooked on seeing the Earth spin around as you flitter from one side of the world to the other! Thanks for stopping by!
This is our bar in Villajoyosa Spain there is a photo to click on thought you might like to drop in for a drink if you are passing
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?t=h&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll
the photo was taken in the winter
Awesome, Maggs! Thanks for sharing!
I had to go to google map so I could get the co-ordinates but then when I just followed this link I couldn't find the photo I found it when I was just looking at the sat picture the bar (photo named the same) by the way is La Tasca
I've made use of Google Earth and Google maps to do research for projects I've been writing. Say a part of my story is set in Antwerp, Honolulu, or Bangkok. Having neither the time nor money to actually go there as of yet, I still have a way to at least see what these cities look like so I can write about them convincingly and even provide visual reference for my artist.
Great Hub. I always forget about this web-application when I am planning lessons. I will remember it and use it in future lectures. Thanks!
Great idea, Valerie! That's an excellent tip for writers! They can research the areas they want to include in their stories.
Glad I could jog a memory, ColoradoMathGuy! Your students will love the visual assistance this tool will give to your assignments.
Thanks to you both for stopping by!
really love your videos, thanks.
Quite interesting! I never knew you could see things with so much detail with GE!
Thanks jonwenberg! Obviously, the videos were compiled by others on YouTube, I'm just sharing their findings. Glad you enjoyed them. I love them!
Thanks anime_nanet! This is just a tip of the fun you can have on Google Earth. I have some others hubs in the works for more Google Earth fun!
Thanks a lot!!! A very excellent TIP and a super Hub.
Thank you Lilian! I've actually published 3 new Google Earth related hubs in the last day or two. One is a general hub, one about NASCAR, and one about baseball stadiums.
Wow! Fantastic Hub! I think I might get hooked on Google Earth as well. I wonder if it has any shots of Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
Thanks Ecoggins! I just zoomed into Angkor Wat in Cambodia and found a large square of trees. So, it's there. Download it and enjoy!
I'm gonna have to try Google Earth soon. Seems interesting.. thanks for sharing
Hubpageswriter, I'm glad you stopped by and enjoyed learning about Google Earth. Give it a try, you'll be hooked too!
Oh man, another thing to distract me from work! LOL, like I need another. Thanks KCC, great article!
Thanks Mardi! Yeah, it's highly addictive, but in a good educational sort of way...LOL
GoogleEarth is the bomb! I first heard about it in high school and have since turned my family onto it. Great hub, btw, very informative!
GoogleEarth-ing is also feels so great because it's a way to travel across the globe without spending a penny in this crazy economy.
Thank you Chris1 and Chris2. I have several other Google Earth hubs I hope you had a chance to view as well. And, you are so right about being able to travel all over the world and not spend a penny! Thanks for stopping by!
Great Hub. I have a friend going to Egypt and now I can follow her without a plane ticket or a boat ride.
Yes you can Lindagoffigan! I enjoyed looking at the pyramids and I was certainly surprised how close they are to the city. You have this big desert, but at the edge of the desert is city. Strange. It's awesome!
google is so cool bc u can look up some stuff like.....pics,
games, mics for xbox360,and more cool stuff
Search engines are like that, pizzalord...lol Google Earth is pretty cool too. ;)
Great Hub! I am a huge fan of Google Earth and many are the hours I have wasted on street view, driving down roads I've never heard of, seeing people I'll never meet...reading this has sparked my interest once again! *sigh* so long life, I'll be with Google Earth for a minute.
Great Hub, really!
Thank you Caleb! There is so much you can do and see on Google Earth. I have several hubs about it, because one hub just won't hold it all. Glad I rekindled your interest.
Very interesting hub. Thanks.
Thank you laswi!
This is quite the comprehensive "infocenter" on Google Earth! It is very informative and helpful. Thanks for all of your hard work ?
Thank you Island Summer.....at the risk of sounding too overly promotional...this is only 1 of about 5-6 hubs I have on Google Earth fun. There is a lot of territory to cover...LOL Thanks for stopping by.
fine hub with different view of google earth.
kumaran, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
I'm addicted to Google Earth as well. I use it to find out what areas I would like to visit depending on the topography and surrounding area. Its helpful having the b&b's listed and other lodging places listed on it as well.
That's a great way to use it, Mountain Man! Thanks for stopping by.
Yeah, I love Google and everything made by Google.
Their tools are incredible!!!
And isn't awesome that they are for free, too, VC!? Thanks for stopping by!
nice video and hub
Thank you Shakhawat!
It's also one of my hobbies...
Thanks for stopping by LVM.
I've been using Google Earth Since Keyhole software made it's first free version. So many people don't even know about it. I use it when I want to plan a vacation. The flyovers are awesome.
Hi MikeNV! Sounds like YOU should be the one writing a hub about it! It is a fantastic tool for so many things. Thanks for stopping by!
KCC
What version of Google Earth are you using now?
The dates that the satellite shots are taken is different, mostly old. So I am not sure about the validity of the Bills Gates house peek.
There are features such as street views that are on the ground photos, from all across the country.
There is a flight simulation using the Google Earh base.
Is there more that I am missing?
BTW, what constitutes a high hub score such as yours?
Thanks
great hub--i love google earth--i put in my address and look and identify my car and other neighbours car park outside, quite amazing
"Virtual traveling" - that's a great phrase. And a lot less expensive than actually traveling to the hawaiian islands--I feel like I just went on a mini-vacation. Nice hobby!
Hi Opinion Duck....I'm not sure which version I have, but I'm fairly certain it's the latest version. I've only had this computer a year and I downloaded it after that. There are tons of features I haven't even explored myself. So much to see and do and so little time. Regarding, the score on this hub......if I knew the answer to that, I'd make sure I had 200 hubs just like it. :)
Fyxer: Thanks! Isn't it cool when you find stuff you recognize? The possibilities are endless.
Chris Crow: You can now take mini-vacations anytime you want! Pick a new place to see every day!
Thanks to all of you for stopping by!
You got me started. I have known about Google Earth for quite some time now but for some reason it seemed to be a lot of hassle. My question to you is how often will it refresh? Are the pictures static or can you tell if someone parks in a driveway or how many horses are in a pasture now and then in ten minutes?
When are they coming up with Google Mars?
Landthatilove: It's not streaming live. They are satellite photos and then the street views are taken by a team of people that go around taking photos. I think most would find live streaming a bit intrusive.
Jimcassa: Google Mars is out now. I have a hub about it.
Wow enjoyed your strange videos there. There are some strange things happening on this planet hahaha. Great stuff
Garyratz: Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Google Earth, Google Mars. Google is actually beating several imaginations. They're doing great. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for stopping by Andrew! Makes you wonder what they'll come out with next, huh?
i have been aDdicted to google earth s
We all are, Amit!

Thank you so much Michelle! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Many an hour I've spent on Google Earth...
Me too, Flowerfeeder! If we only had a nickel for each of those hours, huh? LOL
I'm glad you enjoyed it !
LOL....thanks, zyfwm!
To top of your strategy, the article is very well written, I appreciate your excellent work, hope to continue their efforts to write more and better articles, remember that a return visit to Oh!

I've looked at Google Earth before, but never really dived into it. I had been mostly satisfied with Google Maps and the roadside view, but Google Earth obviously has much more functionality. I am intrigued ^_^
There's a whole world you've been missing out on Steve! Dive in! You'll be hooked!
Interesting Hub.......
Thank you!!
You're welcome, askjanbrass! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing... I thought google earth was just google maps but now maybe I'll go download google earth and give it a try.
Please do, Mikerenalds! You'll have a blast playing around with it. It is so much more than just maps nowadays! Thanks for stopping by!
You are a number one.
I learned a lot of things.

Very interesting hub. Thanks.
Good stuff...thanks for the info
Thank you so much Tudsanee and Robert!
Really cool hub. I'm going to go check Google Earth out. Thanks.
Thank you HarperSmith! We'll see you in a couple of hours then! LOL It's so much fun, you won't want to stop!
Google Earth is really neat. I recently used it to find a store. That was to cool. Thanks for this Hub.
Thanks, Gift Experts! It comes in very handy for all sorts of things.
Google Earth is pretty cool but guess there alot more to it than I thought, so I'm going to go check it out. Thanks
There are tons of things you can do with it now, Ambition! You just have to get in there and play with it! Have fun!
Great idea! I will spend some time playing with it now. Thanks!!
Thanks, Wnelson! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
I love that white horse on Google Earth! It's amazing. Thanks for this hub - I feel like I've been on holiday after visiting half of these places!
That's one of my favorite features, facebookchat; that ability to visit places and FEEL like you've actually been there even though you never left your desk. It's a great way to see the world. Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you enjoyed 'the ride'.
I actually only initially visited to see how to create and manages a successful hub, but I can understand now how one can get hooked on google earth. I never thought of it this way, quite exciting I must say.
Well, I'm flattered, Yagzud. I don't know that I consider this my best hub, but it is certainly a popular hub and for that I am grateful. Google Earth is a great free product that we all can have a lot of fun with. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by!
Great info! I have actually done 'Google Earth Traveling' before. So much fun, and a lot cheaper then traveling!
Way cheaper and way more convenient! Thanks for stopping by EWealthGuide!
Way more convenient too, yes you're right. Faster too, nothing like going to a city across the world in less then ten seconds! Good work KCC Big Country
Thank you so much, EWealthGuide!
As if you're becoming godlike, just controlling your computer's mouse and you can go anywhere in the world and seeing mysterious features of the Earth! Thanks for this great hub, KCC Big Country! I really enjoy goggling the Earth, too.
Thank you, Travelman. It is rather godlike to be cruising around seeing it all. :) I'm glad you enjoy it too! I think the only ones who aren't are the ones who haven't yet tried it.
Hey, KCC, great hub and right up my alley!!! Thanks!
Thank you, Paradise7! If you have a chance, I have probably 5-6 other Google Earth hubs you can check out for more fun!
Fantastic hub showing that there's lots more to Google Earth than meets the eye, and certainly lots more than I ever knew about. Thanks for writing this.
Thank you RP Chapman! There is even more to it than I've written about. I have another hub in the works to be released this next week.
cool i am also interested in computers and do enjoy google earth.... though most of the time im just trying to hack it (i do that a lot) i still enjoy it very much. the graphics are descent but the only thing i noticed (and you may have noticed) is that when you zoom into a building or the ground it flattens the entire surface showing a bad picture.... when better technology comes out i hope that google will make it so that when u zoom into ground level the buildings and the things around it come out of the ground into a 3-D affect.....
You have to make sure you have the latest version and have all the right options turned on. Things like that have improved greatly. Thanks for stopping by.
So good.
thank.
Aww..thank you so much tusanee!
Haha you must have a lot of time on your hands. I'm not going to deny it though, google earth is addictive
Not really....I work full-time, write full-time, cook, clean, etc.....oh wait...it's because I'm super-woman!
Hi my friend. This is a great page. Please be a friend and visit my page as well. http://www.bukisa.com/articles/159014_a-killer-is-
Need to check this one out...great info!!!
Thanks Misstikal and Camping Toilets!
Nice article!
Thank you very much ABTEODORO!
Extremely fascinating. Great Work!!
Thank you Peacenhim!
Great Hub KCC, I am pretty new to Google Earth, but have just introduced my Step Father to it so that he could check out a town called Grenville in Grenada as research for a book he is writing. it is pretty amazing how it works I have to say.
Thanks Mistyhorizon. There is so much to see on Google Earth. It's absolutely amazing to see this big world we live in.
Awesome list. Cheers. Some of the things you can see are hilarious
Thanks Jimmy, I agree!
Great hub. Kudos.
Thank you bojanglesk8!
I actually deleted google earth cuz it was taking up so much memory. But the picture of those elephants has made me reconsider. Yet if I start getting serious with it, I'm afraid I won't get any work done and I'll "starve."
There are some places where you can see other animals and even people. It's amazing. I'm like you, if I get too involved in it, I won't get anything else done. Thanks for stopping by BookFlame.

LOL "click here to see Bill Gates' house" I can drive 15 minutes and see it in person.. it's huge but blends in well and the technology is over the top. At night if you go by on a boat you can see them swimming in their indoor pool!! Tee hee! This is such a fun hub!! Thanks KCC, I'm tired of look at Bill's house, can I look at yours?
