I'm a huge fan of Google Earth. I have written quite a few articles about all the neat things you can see with Google Earth. I have provided links to my other related hubs below.
One of my favorite uses of Google Earth is to visit historic or iconic symbols, in this case, found in America.
With the state of the economy many people are choosing not to travel as much any more. This a great way to travel without leaving your house!
I've included some places to help get you started.
Click herefor a great list that is even sorted by state provided by HistoryPlace.com.
- Google 3d Warehouse has 3d models of many of the The National Registry American historical landmarks.
I've created a list of some of the places I've looked at on Google Earth.
- Old Faithful, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming
- The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco (you can see all the tiny little cars on the bridge)
- The Space Needle and Experience Music Project in Seattle (lots of photos there and amazing detail in this area)
- Hemisfair Tower and Parkin San Antonio, Tx (I have a hub about the Hemisfair, go see what HR Pufnstuf has to do with it all)
- Moody Gardenson Galveston Island, Tx(watch for the pyramid shaped buildings)
- Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, TX (see if you can find the big white Texas-shaped wave pool in the water area of the park)
- The Hollywood Sign in California This one is rather difficult to see because of the angles, but it is marked and once you get focused in you can make out "WOOD" better than the rest.
- The Hoover Dam in Nevada
- Coney Island (I love all the colorful round tops on the carnival rides)
- Shuttle Landing Strip and Launch Pads at Cape Canaveral Florida
- Follow the winding mighty Mississippi River (I love how the land is divided all along the river)
- Hickam Air Force Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
- Las Vegas strip (don't miss out on the fountains at Bellagio, the pyramids, the Eiffel Tower) Check out fellow-hubber Dohn's hub about all the things you won't want to miss in Las Vegas!
- Cocoa Beach (check out all of the nice peninsulas where everyone has waterfront property and a boat)
- Lombard Street in San Francisco (crazy curvy road)
- Alcatraz Island and neighboring Treasure Island
- Area 51
- McDonald Observatory, Fort Davis, Texas
- Rows and Rows of cars lined up at several entrances from Juarez Mexico into El Paso, Texas
- Reunion Tower in Dallas (the ball you see in all downtown Dallas skyline photos)
- All the Riverboat Casinos in Shreveport/Bossier City Louisiana along the very muddy Red River
- Grand Canyon (check out fellow hubber Dohn's hub about Grand Canyon here).
Top Five List from WebUpon.com
On Feb 18, 2009 WebUpon.com released it's list of the ten places you must visit on Google Earth.
This list includes:
- New York City, New York - here you can view the entire island in 3D. You can see many of the key buildings like the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and the United Nations Head Quarters.
- Mount Everest- quite a natural beauty. The whole region surrounding the worlds tallest mountain has been modelled in 3D. The landscape and scenery here is simply breathtaking.
- Niagara Falls- another impressing work of nature. From here you can see both the American and Canadan falls.
- Mount St Helens - here you can see where the volcanic eruption took away almost half the mountain and the desolate landscape it has left behind.
- Dimmitt, Texas - now here is something interesting. Search for this place then zoom out a little bit and have a look at shape of the farmlands. Looks like a giant circle puzzle.

I've had such a wonderful time researching great places to see utilizing Google Earth. Tonight, as I was putting the finishing touches on this hub, I stumbled upon this site. This site contains challenging way to test your skills without even having to download Google Earth. It shows you a random place found on Google Earth in the top half of the screen, while the bottom half shows you Google Earth. The object is to locate that place on the bottom screen using the zoom features. Once you've correctly located it, it will click that you've found it. I spent hours playing on there!

Dohn! You should definitely do a hub on the Grand Canyon! When you do it, email me the link and I'll add it here. I have plans to visit the Grand Canyon for the first time in Sept 2010.
I've made up my mind...I'm gonna do it!
Way to go, dohn! Just email me the link and I'll add it here. I look forward to reading it!
Fabulous. Our holiday is virtual this year so this is useful
Mine is virtual too this year Ethel! But, I feel like I've been all over with all the research I did on Google Earth for this hub and several others I did. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you see some fun places.
Added your link above, Dohn!

Incredible! I was thinking of doing a hub on the Grand Canyon as I've visited the place three times now...Guess you gotta do something while losing your fortune at America's Premier Sandpit! Thanks, KCC Big Country.
