Google Goes Solar Power
64
Google show real time statistics of how much electricity it generates from Solar panels installed in its main building. So far it has generated more than 610,000 kilowatt hours of electricity since the month of June.
Google is currently involved in an ambitious plan of providing renewable energy at a cost cheaper than coal and as part of the first step it had installed hundreds of Solar panels on its Googleplex building in Mountain View.
The solar installation is expected to break even in seven and half years after which it will be able to generate electricity for free. Here is a video link about this solar project.
In this link, Google shows the daily statistics of how much power it generates. It generated 644 kilowatt-hours of electricity yesterday. The peak in the graph shows the time when there is maximum sunlight. This generated electricity can provide power to the following:
• 402 dishwasher cycles
• 1373 hairdryers for 15 minutes
• 536 coffee makers for an hour
• 2683 alarm clocks for 24 hours
• 234 loads of laundry
• 5366 hours of flat screen TV watching
Though this power generation seems to be small, it is a great start; this installation when fully operational will provide electricity for approximately 1,000 California homes in a year or provide power to meet 30% of Google’s peak electricity needs at its headquarters.
If other companies do the same and if solar panels are installed in empty land areas or deserts will generate additional power.

Thanks Stacie, glad to see Google is leading the way.
Great HUB! I'm sure glad to see one of the big ones get on board. It will prove:
'A little bit at a time will add up'
regards Zsuzsy
I agree Zsuzsy, I was reading at another blog, they were ridiculing this Google's effort. Atleast they are doing something, once Google installs in every building it owns that will add significantly.
Thanks cgull8m!! I applaude Google's effort!! Everything, big or small, that we can do to help heal Mother Earth and reduce depleting her natural resources is a step in the right direction!! Thank you for sharing!! Thank you from Google for taking this action seriously!! Blessings, Earth Angel!!
Wonderful Hub!!
A great hub and timely.
Son 3's school is going Solar and they are endeavouring to be the first school in NSW to achieve same. The Principle knows what he his doing. He is getting great publicity . Every time he achieves a mile post he gets recognition in the Newspaper.
Thank you and him
Nice hub great information
Thank you
Google is so cool! and as Earthangel mentioned is a great thing for the enviroment!
I would gladly swicth from my london electricity to Google electricity!
I love the pic of the Googleplex building. I bet Google is such a brilliant company to work for!!
I was wondering, do we work for Google indirectly via AdSense? That would sound cool if so;)
Mark, I wish I could work for Google would have learned a lot, but I don't think they will hire me, there are plenty of brilliant minds out there. I just share the good stuff from Google here :), if there are bad things from them I will definitely say it here. Cheers.
I really liked the Hub.gr8.keep writing.
Never say never:)
This is a great step for the world!
their 'measure gadget' doesn't work well, though, but as one of the most important companies on this planet, they should have done much more for renewable energy sources
they are the most influential information provider, ever!
Thanks Solarshingles, the gadget is not working but the solar cells are working fine it seems. Among the top companies, Google is the one has invested a lot of money for their solar power, and they will invest more in the future.
Oops! Our monitoring system seems to be having some problems right now, but don't worry -- the solar panels are still working! Please come back soon.
