Google introduces a competing browser named Chrome that will go head to head against Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Mozilla’s Firefox, Apple’s Safari and others.

The Chrome browser will be a Webkit-based browser like Safari and will have its own JavaScript engine and will launch very soon at http://Google.com/chrome. It is an open-sourced browser; others can create any web based applications as well make improvements in the browser.

TechCrunch's Arrington said though Chrome appears to be competing against other browsers it is basically going against Microsoft Windows. Google wants to have all the applications to run on a browser, so an operating system like Windows won’t be necessary. The new JavaScript engine will make the applications on the web much faster and run far more efficiently.

Arrington said in the article:

Chrome is nothing less than a full on desktop operating system that will compete head on with Windows.

Expect to see millions of web devices, even desktop web devices, in the coming years that completely strip out the Windows layer and use the browser as the only operating system the user needs.

With Google Gears, the applications can be run off-line as well and also store the data off-line as a backup.

Here is a comic demo illustrating the Chrome browser, what is it based, how it is going to run and what are the various things the users can do in a browser.

The video shows a general look of the Chrome browser.

Some features of the Chrome browser are the following:

1.) Compared to Firefox, the tabs appear at the top.

2.) Google said in its blog, unlike other browsers, if one tab crashes, the other tabs keeps working in the new chrome.

3.) They have improved the speed of browsing and also are trying to keep it very secure.

4.) Chrome also provides private browsing like the Safari and the new Internet Explorer.

5.) Chrome browser has a powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren't even available yet.

6.) Only Windows version is available, but Google will also release Chrome in Mac and Linux version very soon.

7.) The new Chrome will be available in 100 countries.

Mozilla’s CEO John Lily told Om Malik that he is not afraid about the Chrome browser, though he should worry about it. But it will take Chrome some time to surpass Firefox. Recently Google signed a three year agreement with Mozilla.

Do we need another browser? Apparently not right now, but if Chrome demonstrates that it is a great browser, safe, fast and makes us run the important applications on the web without an operating system, I think many users would love to use it.

It's going to be a while before they can compete with Windows. Nothing beats experience. :)

Uninvited Writer, glad you liked it. The competition is helping us get the best products.

AnneChen, I agree, Google has a long way to go but the initial impression is good, it can be a good alternate browser.

Thanks Maxim.
