Google Maps added another new feature that will help us find our location anywhere in the city or country and use that location to find other places nearby. This is similar to GPS feature but for the phones that don’t have GPS capabilities.

The new feature in Google Maps is called “My Location”. Suppose you are in a city but you don’t know where exactly you are and try to find the nearest food places or bars, then this feature will help you reach there without getting lost.

In Google Maps, to find directions you need the starting point and the destination point. If you have GPS devices, then the Google Maps will show your location automatically and you can connect to places from there. But if you don’t have a GPS device, Google Maps uses the help of Mobile phone towers to find the approximate location.

When you access Google Maps, you first send information to the Mobile Towers and then the towers connects with the Google Maps Server. Based on these connections, the “My Location” feature takes the information from the towers and calculates an approximate location of where the call originated from.

The video shows how it finds your location. Google Map is able to locate you within 1,000 meters on an average.

To use this feature, go to http://google.com/gmm in your mobile and access the maps. When you use the map, just press “0” and look for a blue dot, that will be your starting point.

Google says that this feature should work on most Java enabled, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm and Nokia Symbian phones.

Some may be worried about the privacy, the mobile towers will share only the location (approximate area), not the name of the individual or the phone number will be provided to Google. If you still have fear, you can simply avoid Google Maps.

Another great feature from Google, I am sure this will be included in their Google Android platform and will be available in every mobile phone in the near future. Now you don't need to ask the question, Where am I?

All the new phones will have features that will enable all Google services in the future. So, we won't have any problems trying to access them.
