Google Email Scam
I recieved a strange email today claiming to be from Google, stating that I have won a lot of money in a draw " £500, 000.00GBP (Five Hundred Thousand British Pounds) in our online Give-away 1Oth Anniversary draws."
The email copied and pasted in full below is either from a moronic, stupid, individual who believes that people will fall for his/her devious (lol) scam.
or Google have employed a moron to run their prize draw.( I seriously doubt this)
As far as I am aware Google are not running a 10th anniversary prize draw and if they were I am sure that they would have advertised it by now and eveyone on internet land would have heard about it by now.
From start to finish the email I recieved is a shambles, mistakes are everywhere, we could start a competition to see who can find the most of them.
Take a look below at the email.
the first thing that you will notice is that it is sent from a Hotmail account, Why oh Why would Google email anyone from hotmail when they have their very own Gmail hosting.
see how many errors and stupid mistakes you can find.

Believe me, the lure of money blinds everything and people like me have fallen for it . I ended up spending about 41,000/- and ended up getting nothing . Please don't fall into the same trap .
Hey thanks for the hub....It is this type of scam that runs rampant across the internet. Which makes some legitimate opportunities seem too good to be true...Two years in internet and network marketing has yielded many a scam just like this into my inbox...the first thing that I would urge you to do is delete any email with a lottery or winnings claim....I usually just hit reply and then get the confirmation that the email address is invalid...Doing what I do...I nail every single spammer out there to a tree....People hate me for that but I want to keep things legitimate for those of us doing business online..Thanks again for the hub.
These spammers and Nigeria-billioinnaire dreams thugs cheats are in plenty on net for a few hundred dollars... good to expose them
Nice expose. These, unfortunately, run rampant on the net. Thanks.
Great hub Jimmy. But it appears that they forgot to ask you for your bank account number so they could deposit your winnings. LOL Chuck
This sort of stuff has been going on forever.
Bulk mailers, chain letter forwarders, and now in this technological age - Spammers - send em out.
People keep responding.
So they send more out.
You won't get rid of this kind of stuff until the part of the brain that handles the desire of people to get something for nothing is surgically removed.
No matter how much advice you give people to stay away, there's always that little, niggling voice in their heads saying . . .
"I know, but maybe THIS one is legitimate . . . ."
And the one in maybe one million who responds makes it all worthwile for the spammers. (@ Rajan - I feel for you! )
And results in clogged up mailboxes for the rest of us.
Thanks for the heads up, my mom asks me about these all the time.
I got one too. Really a stupid jerk who did this. nonsense? you just wait for your turn to be fooled....for those honest poeple out there help others fight this unwanted scam....too many and too much already....
Heres the one I received today...

I just received a email from Google stating that it was their ten year aniversary, and that i just won the same amount of money. Cant these jerks just leave me alone. I guess what the say is right. The love of money is the root of all evil. Darn scam artist.
i had a similar thing in my yahoo box a while ago , claiming to be from yahoo . of course , you had to pay a small fee to claim your prize . wonder how many people fell for that one......
What a Scam. How can these people send such mail and then consider themself smart and clever. They are the Biggest FOOLs on Earth.
Why would someone pretending to be from Google have a Hotmail address?? Stupid as a sack of rocks...
The sad thing is that there are people who fall for these scams! I also get fake phone calls, which begin, 'Congratulations, you have been selected...' (I usually hang up at that point.)
These people who send these emails to thousands of people are really quite smart! as there will always be people who are NOT smart, and think its all real and send account details or payments to secure winnings!!
I am aware of such emails using Yahoo's name , but the ones I received using Google's name have , so far , been about making money working for Google. However, those are mostly spams ( although not all of them scams) and obviously not from Google. I know that people still do fall into the traps of such phishers because the internet surfer is growing by the hour, but I was surprised to read the second comment here.
I also got this spam :
You won £500,000.00 GBP in Google Online Give-away promotion. Contact Mr Francis Henson with the following details below through this email: mrf.henson002@googlemail.com. I googled bout this Mr Francis Henson, maybe these spammers experienced a bit by using googlemail. but why did they send it to yahoomail not to gmail if it's a google promotion? still such a moron..
haha be very very careful out there my friend cuz internet can be your best friends and your worst enemies
Oh really, this message reminds me something:as far as there is a stupid, poor will survives some how!!! :-)

One of the obvious thing to let us judge on wether the email is scam or not is the sender's email addresses. I can say 100% email sent via free mail like hotmail, yahoo mail, google mail are all scams. Why don't they just be wise a little bit next time not to send via free email? Coz it is too obvious for other people to know that they are SCAMMER.

I got the same "francis henson" email today, and they are now sending it from the email address winners@googlepromotions.org, which looks more legit. i hope people still don't fall for it. if you go to googlepromotions.org, there is no website there - another easy way to check on the legitimacy of these scams.
Keep yourselves away from this kind of lucarative mails. This only leads you for mental and financial tence. Obviously a 419er. There are actually websites out there that bait these guys and get them to incriminate themsleves (or just make them look stupid) The best one is the 419 eater website at http://www.419eater.com/ The best one I've seen was the one where Chris Hansen of Dateline NBC scammed the scammer in to thinking he was going to be getting a bunch of MONEY!
http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-US&bran
Obviously they aren't that bright.
I received the same thing! Anyway, I chased it all up, and they said
Send postage and handling charges to (etc.) to receive your prize. Yes, I think its a scam!!!
Well, Have a great day! Thankyou for confirming it for me, too, as now i know! Thanks!
If you were to run a competition for who receives the most of these types of e-mails, I'm sure I'd win! I've been receiving around 40 per day for the last 2 years! My fault I guess as I do encourage spam, in between the rubbish you can find useful info, but the things these people dream up are incredible!
I received one from an African who apparenty started the internet! Yup he was the creator and to prove it he even gave a link to a website that praised his achievements! Then there's the Christian Ministries annual giveaway of charity money and a link to a genuine catholic web site.
Lady Windsor, currently living in Africa but unfortunately dying of cancer has several billion that she doesn't want her family to get their hands on, so she wants me to give it to her cats, and THE director general of the Nigerian National bank is in the unfortunate position of having to 'dispose' of several billion that was left in an account by a presumed dead terrorist. I just need to send him all my personal and bank details together with a blank sheet of paper with my signature at the bottom. Of course I'll mail it first class!
Be warned however that some of these scams can be quite clever. I received one once from Yahoo, and it even had a link to their site so that I could check, well it looked exactly like a yahoo site and I almost, nearly......signed in !
Oh by the way, I forgot to tell you....the only one that isn't a scam is the google award, apparently they are celebrating 10 years and they're giving away fortunes, look out for it in your mail box but you must respond immediately or you lose it.
(Joking!)
it occures evey day online
i even received a mobile message claimed to be from NOKIA UK
what if i tell them my info?im such a stupid before to reply them.stupid me.what should i do?
So long as you haven't given them your banking details you should be safe, but if you have given them out you should contact you bank as soon as possible to stop any transactions before it is too late, good luck.....jimmy
this is nothing but scam to cheat people who believe in getting fast bucks . Do not fall prey. I too had recieved this E mail said to be from google but verified and found bullshit
i got a mail from ggogle new year promotion winning cash 500000 british pounds prize from google.on 1st january.i knew that it's a fake...not true but, i have respoced him by given ids & contact with them,..as a result...they have given me so many details ...or delievery opitins to get winning cash....& i tried to contact with them as given theirs number.....just come to know that ...how rudlly they are making fool to people..& now there after sending with all details....since i havent received any mail from them.....hope i will not get it again...
I had a discussion with almost 15 winners. they all lost their money.
Thanks for all your information. It confirmed for me what I had been thinking all along. This is my first time to recieve this kind of email. Once again, thank you all.

Great Post, 10X. ;-)
Like P.T. Barnum said, "A sucker is born every minute." There's a strategy of generating traffic called email marketing in which from 10,000 emails you send, maybe 3% actually visit your site, and from that 300 visits 10 people actually buy from you. So if your product is $25.00, just by sending 10,000 emails you can get $250.00. There are software that can mine people's emails and save them, and software for mass sending of emails, so all you really need to do is sit for a long time in front of your PC.
I suppose it's the same with these false emails that trick people into spending and sending money and detailing their credit card info just to get hold of some elusive prize. So who do we think these scammers are kidding? A lot. The small minority that take them seriously, however, aren't as lucky.
Con people will always abound, if only because scamming the gullible is just another business opportunity, wherein the returns outweigh the investment. The post on email marketing above makes that point clearly: you just have to throw a large enough net and some fish will get caught; then you have to keep doing it again and again until even the not so bright fish learn to avoid you. Emails, phone calls, websites, pamphlets. The medium used may vary, but scams are scams. It's good you posted this to inform people.
I recieved the same mail today!
"You won the sum of 500,000.00GBP in the on-going Google promotion, you are to contact Mr Newton Brown The online agent assign to handle your funds for more information Email: mrnewton.brown4@live.com.Below are your winning details Computer Generated Profile Numbers (CGPN):7-22-71-00-66-12 (No Ticket Sold)"
Yup - 1 May 2009 and I have just received it. A much shorter one than yours, but the various numbers, including the "winning ticket number" were identical to yours. Also, it was addressed to "none", so how could I have been picked out as the winner? The address they gave for me to contact them was promo.announcement11@gmail.com. Though tempted to flame them, I resisted. ;-)
Hi All,
Got one of these today. So their scam continues...

Dear Manish, read this message in detail for your full understanding about this transaction. I am CHEKE USU. the Director in charge of Auditing section Bank Of Africa (B.O.A). Forgive my indignation if this message comes to you as a surprise. AS IT MAY INTEREST YOU TO KNOW, I GOT YOUR IMPRESSIVE INFORMATION THROUGH THE INTERNET SEARCH HERE IN OUAGADOUGOU BURKINA-FASO. I FASTED AND PRAYED FOR THREE DAYS BEFORE I CONTACT YOU TO BE MY PARTNER. I have decided to contact you on a project that will be very beneficial for both of us. During our auditing in this Bank,I came across some amount of money belonging to a deceased foreigner who died with his wife and their three children in a plane crash. The fund has been dormant in his account with this Bank without any claim of the fund in our custody from his relation before my discovery to this development. The said amount is U.S $3.2.00(THREE MILLION TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS).Our Banking law stipulates that if such money remained unclaimed after 5 years, the money will be transferred into the Bank treasury as unclaimed fund. The request of foreigner as next of kin in this business is occasioned by the fact that the customer was a foreigner and a Burkinabe cannot stand as next of kin. I dont want this money to go into the Bank's treasury as unclaimed Bill. Be assured that this transaction is 100% risk free. On conclusion of this Project, you will be entitled to 40% of the total sum as gratification, while 60% will be for me. Please you have been adviced to keep "top secret" as I am still in service and intend to retire from service after I conclude this deal with you. I will fly down to your country for subsequent sharing of the fund according to percentages previously indicated and further investment will be discussed. On your acceptance to be my partner, i will send you a text of application to fill and send to the bank for payment approval.Regards.Cheke Usu

Hey jimmy thanks for this, i googled this, as it wasnt picked up in my spam, as all others do. If it was true jimmy, then you have been cheated, as i had the same numbers as you, but i won 850k GB Pounds..alas i shall not collect as i feel all this money would ruin my life..LOL.. How stupid do they think we are (or nearly)
I received this kind of e-mail , i just contacted the RCMP and the SQ in Canada at www.phonebuster.com. We should always act as so, this is the only way we hope this kind of junk will disapear from the net, But there will always be intelligent people using there intelligence to scam others. ciao, Sylvie
Hi Folks,
This obvious scam is easily punished. Simply press the report spam button and leave Google and their lawyers sort out thes idiots.
Whatever about not even changing the winning numbers, the scammers didn't even get a native english speaker to proof read their email. Anybody who has English as their first language or even a fluent foreign speaker would have noted the clanging grammar
Report the spam and they will be hunted down by Google who understandably resent their corporate identity being used in this fashion. I'm just surprised that google allow somebody to use their name in the email address.
HIT THAT REPORT SPAM BUTTON..
Guess what? I just recieved the same e-mail. Although it doesn't seem like the one above, the adresses provided are same
Here it is

I have received two emails of such kind of scam. One about 1 year ago, and other today. When I got the first one scam email, I honestly responded and exchanged many messages with them until they asked me to pay 1,000 USD first for the wiring cost. I realized it is a scam. After this experience, I can easily recognize whether it is a scam or not. Here are some guidelines.
1. What kinds of email hosting they are using? Can you imagine that a google winning promotion plan would use a hotmail email account?
2. Google the subject they are sending and you will find out the truth, just like this nice bug.
I also got this kind of email. I thought I would never got this kinda email since I'm in Jakarta, Indonesia. But when I tried to find out about this promotion and ended up in this hub. Gosh.....I finally know that they do this all around the world!
However, below is the email that I received a couple days ago:

What? I didn't really win? I just bought a boat and a house...boy, this sux
I guess the scammer had become a little... slightly smarter.. I got the same e-mail and the content is exactly the same (apart from the different numbers). Just that for now, they create a different e-mail account.. it's no longer using hotmail, but gmail account! (which makes this scam even more plausible) but still, the huge amount is unbelievable.. it's too good to be true.. Don't fall to prey to this scam =)

Thanks for posting this. The email has since changed (much shorter now and includes a name of a person to contact) but it is recognizable by numbers they generated to "identify" you- exactly the same as the ones in yours.
It amazes me that people are still falling for these scams. There are almost daily warnings about internet fraud. Greedy people are always getting scammed. Greed more than ignorance is the reason people lose money to these thugs.
I got the same mail today .. be careful ..
I just got the same email. How can people think that we can drop into this crap specially when it is send from another service supplier.
I received it too, and knew it was a scam when I saw the prize money was in British pounds. Google is an American company!
Hey i have also received this type of email, claiming that i have won 500,000 pound.I would like to thank all the user who posted and shared their words here. This is all "bull-shit".Hey Users THANKS.............
