Google Search Engine

My friend Joshua Nestor now has a review on Google Search web site. I don't know what keeps him dedicated to that monster-in-the-making which soon will resemble Microsoft - if not already - but this is how he is, and he keeps producing some nice reviews, and I keep publishing them :)

Google is the most used search engine on the World Wide Web. It is owned by Google, Inc., and has been in existence since 1997. It is Stanford University's official search engine. Some estimates are that more than one hundred million people submit queries to Google each day. It is one of the top ten visited web sites each day!

How is Google different from other search engines? Simply summarized, the algorithm uses a system called "PageRank," patented by Google. When you submit a search to Google, PageRank calculates a weighted sum in ranking the web pages that potentially match the terms, correlating with their importance. Google has described PageRank as follows: "PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves ‘important' weigh more heavily and help to make other pages ‘important.'" Google also employs other unknown criteria for ranking web pages on its results lists, in addition to PageRank. Such criteria are kept secret.

Results returned by Google include web pages, and a vast variety of other files, including Word documents, PDF files, videos (i.e. YouTube), Shockwave Flash files (flash SWF), plain text files, Excel spreadsheets, etc. Google converts these files to (X)HTML which enables the viewer to read the file, even if they do not have the software application installed on their computer.

Compared to Yahoo! and Msn.com and Ask.com, the results returned by Google are considered to be better in that Google is a superior search engine in determining if a link is a natural citation or not. Google filters out pages with duplicate content, and it looks for natural link growth over time. Msn.com may give you results with a heavy bias towards commercial web sites and high traffic recent links. Yahoo! also tends to produce results that are commercial in nature, and has a lot of internal links and a paid inclusion program, which does not always lend the best quality web pages for your queries.

Google is intuitively easy to use, which is probably part of the reason why it is the most popular search engine. For example, if you misspell a word in your search terms, Google will provide results for the correctly spelled term (and ask you if you misspelled it). In addition Google can be used as a calculator, currency converter, and a dictionary. In short, if you have a question, Google can get you an answer!

There are a number of ways that you can harness this power to help you run Internet searches. The most commonly used is launched from www.google.com, at which a visitor can enter terms on a particular subject in the space provided. You can either click on "Google search," or "I'm feeling lucky." With the first option, you may get thousands of results for the query. However, with the second option, you will get only the first result page.

But don't stop there. Many people may not notice the small print to the right of the long rectangular box with the cursor just waiting for you to put in your terms. Click on "Advanced Search" to narrow your results significantly from number of web pages returned to specifying exact terms, wording or phrases, rejecting unwanted words, specifying desired languages, file type, and even stating in which site or domain you wish Google to look for results.

Also to the right of the search box is the "Search Preference" icon. Click on this to let Google know in which languages the pages returned should be. You can also specify how many results per page (default is 10, but you can request up to 100 per page).

The "Language Tools" icon is fascinating! Type in a phrase in your own language to find web pages in other languages - specify the translation desired (i.e. English to Spanish). You can also copy and paste a foreign URL and it will be translated for you, provided you request the specific language translation. A list of all Google sites in local countries' domains is also provided. Users can run images searches from images.google.com. Just enter the topic on which you wish to search, and you will get results based on your request. There are Advanced Image Search and Preferences options for this search tool, as well. These options are similar to those discussed above, with the notable exception that with the Advanced Image Search, you can specify size and coloration of images.

Beyond the ordinary uses of the Google tools, users can create a Custom Search Engine, provided you have a Google Account. With this option, you can look through one specific web site, multiple sites, or even specific web pages. You will be able to host the search box and post results on your own web site, as well. This option can benefit your business, non-profit organization, or even your blog! You can also use the "SafeSearch" filtering technology, through the customizing feature.

Another helpful feature for busy people is www.google.com/searchhistory that can be accessed with a Google Account. Log on and review the pages that you visited recently, including Google searches, web pages, images, and videos. You can remove items from your web history, if you wish. It should be noted that Google has been criticized for placing cookies on user's computers to store preferences, and past searches. This enables the company to track search terms; data is retained for up to one year.

There are so many options through the search engines provided by Google for users to find both general and very specific information and images. Explore the various options and see what works best for you or your organization. Definitely consider signing up for a Google Account to maximize the options available. Run a few sample searches and see what works best, or if you need additional assistance. Google is definitely there to help, and has a great deal of resources to see that you find the information you are seeking!

No, I love your hub, so I vote thumbs up!  One thing I noticed about Google and other U.S. based search engines is that they seem to exclude sites from other countries.

I do a lot of research on languages, and I find that I really have to pull off some clever tricks at times to get in touch with servers, for example, in Germany or England.

I wonder if that is because I am using English words to search, although using other languages does not always give me what I am searching for either.

Yeah Jenny, this time you were the fastest! :)

Cheff Jeff, no, search engines use your IP address to determine where you are, and serve results accordingly. You can try to use proxy server located in Germany for German results, this may help.

Paul, I tried to do my best :)

Wow Misha,

You've given birth to another hub. Congratulations!

To Chef Jeff - and anyone else who wants to see Google results for a specific country, region, etc.

There's a Firefox addon called Google Global that does this beautifully.

Dutch84: No mystery, and nothing to do with the quality of his hubs. Misha has got so many fans because he charms all the good looking girls who sign up at hubpages. They then feel sorry for him, and become a fan of his :-) :-)

Well, that's my theory - Because it took him ages to become my fan!

This was very interesting. Frankly I am a dog pile fan. I find there is less clutter on the front page. And I am figuring in the long run less space taken up on my computer- with all that blitz when you open it.

I do have a goggle tool bar, just in case- and do use it at times. I use them all -=really. That way it’s never biased by any giant.

I thought it really came down to this.

Internet searches are the most valuable real estate on earth, and the top search’s come down to who pays to be there or who knows how to sit on the machine and over ride the search. I know some can master that... hit

My brain just can’t compute sitting on the computer that long. I see this scored you high and I am certain that is your goal. And it’s obvious- you know how to do it with less feed and higher volume.

Best wishes Mr speedo I enjoyed reading your things this morning. You obviously know what you have and how to use it. LOL

Increased Website Traffic 12 months ago

I have to admit of course that using google is just second nature now. Anything you want to know, just google it and you will most likely find the answer. Well at least that is true for basicquestions you may have. But I can't help but think that when you are searching for information more specialized, there are a large quanity of pages with nothing more than ads appearing high in the search results. No real content, no info to answer your questions. Just links [no doubt revenue generating for the page owner] to other sites that just may deliver the answer. Yahoo is not much better of course. However, Bing.com at the moment does seem to be a little better in this area. It may not happen immediately, but I have a feeling that Bing is going to start taking away a lot of google traffic over the coming year or two. If it does, it can only be positive for us all, as we see google hitting back by perhaps solving some of the issues that draw away so many of its current users.

Aya Katz profile image

Misha, I saw somewhere in the Forums that you said PageRank makes no difference for earning. That a page rank of zero is good enough. So what is page rank a good indicator of?

Misha profile image

Misha 2 months ago

FYS, whenever my muse arrives, I'll ask her :)

Aya, yes, I said that. Pagerank is not an indicator of anything really. It is supposed to measure the amount of "link love" your page receives, and even here it sometimes fails miserably as my example demonstrated. It's a smoke screen, sort of. People just have to have something absolutely dumb to believe in.

I can give you an analogy from another area - not sure it will ring any bell for you though, but I will try. The elasticity of a car engine mostly is determined by its displacement. The bigger the displacement, the more forgiving and pulling the engine is.

Yet in America you guys judge car engines by the number of cylinders. The more the merrier. Granted, on average higher displacement engines have more cylinders - but the number of cylinders does not define engine elasticity, its displacement does.

There is no cause and effect relationship between the number of cylinders and engine elasticity. Yet engine displacement mostly defines both the number of cylinders and elasticity.

The same with pagerank. Yes, pages with more and juicier links coming to them tend to have higher pagerank - yet pagerank does not determine anything, links do. Are you still with me? ;)

Aya Katz profile image

Aya Katz 2 months ago

Misha, so there is no direct correlation between number of links and page rank? What else goes into calculating page rank, then? Or is that part of the Google proprietary information that we're not supposed to know about?

Misha profile image

Misha 2 months ago

There is a correlation between the number - and quality - of backlinks and pagerank in most cases. There is not a cause and effect relationship between pagerank of a particular page and its place in google rankings for a particular keyword. :)

They succeed because they deliver relevant content for sure. Like someone above said they don't usually display content in different languages because they know what language you are searching for and what language the page is in. It is small things that this that make it complicated in the back end but simple for the user. Which of course the users love.
