Google Search Engine
81My friend Joshua Nestor now has a review on Google Search web site. I don't know what keeps him dedicated to that monster-in-the-making which soon will resemble Microsoft - if not already - but this is how he is, and he keeps producing some nice reviews, and I keep publishing them :)
Google is the most used search engine on the World Wide Web. It is owned by Google, Inc., and has been in existence since 1997. It is Stanford University's official search engine. Some estimates are that more than one hundred million people submit queries to Google each day. It is one of the top ten visited web sites each day!
How is Google different from other search engines? Simply summarized, the algorithm uses a system called "PageRank," patented by Google. When you submit a search to Google, PageRank calculates a weighted sum in ranking the web pages that potentially match the terms, correlating with their importance. Google has described PageRank as follows: "PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves ‘important' weigh more heavily and help to make other pages ‘important.'" Google also employs other unknown criteria for ranking web pages on its results lists, in addition to PageRank. Such criteria are kept secret.
Results returned by Google include web pages, and a vast variety of other files, including Word documents, PDF files, videos (i.e. YouTube), Shockwave Flash files (flash SWF), plain text files, Excel spreadsheets, etc. Google converts these files to (X)HTML which enables the viewer to read the file, even if they do not have the software application installed on their computer.
Compared to Yahoo! and Msn.com and Ask.com, the results returned by Google are considered to be better in that Google is a superior search engine in determining if a link is a natural citation or not. Google filters out pages with duplicate content, and it looks for natural link growth over time. Msn.com may give you results with a heavy bias towards commercial web sites and high traffic recent links. Yahoo! also tends to produce results that are commercial in nature, and has a lot of internal links and a paid inclusion program, which does not always lend the best quality web pages for your queries.
Google is intuitively easy to use, which is probably part of the reason why it is the most popular search engine. For example, if you misspell a word in your search terms, Google will provide results for the correctly spelled term (and ask you if you misspelled it). In addition Google can be used as a calculator, currency converter, and a dictionary. In short, if you have a question, Google can get you an answer!
There are a number of ways that you can harness this power to help you run Internet searches. The most commonly used is launched from www.google.com, at which a visitor can enter terms on a particular subject in the space provided. You can either click on "Google search," or "I'm feeling lucky." With the first option, you may get thousands of results for the query. However, with the second option, you will get only the first result page.

But don't stop there. Many people may not notice the small print to the right of the long rectangular box with the cursor just waiting for you to put in your terms. Click on "Advanced Search" to narrow your results significantly from number of web pages returned to specifying exact terms, wording or phrases, rejecting unwanted words, specifying desired languages, file type, and even stating in which site or domain you wish Google to look for results.
Also to the right of the search box is the "Search Preference" icon. Click on this to let Google know in which languages the pages returned should be. You can also specify how many results per page (default is 10, but you can request up to 100 per page).
The "Language Tools" icon is fascinating! Type in a phrase in your own language to find web pages in other languages - specify the translation desired (i.e. English to Spanish). You can also copy and paste a foreign URL and it will be translated for you, provided you request the specific language translation. A list of all Google sites in local countries' domains is also provided. Users can run images searches from images.google.com. Just enter the topic on which you wish to search, and you will get results based on your request. There are Advanced Image Search and Preferences options for this search tool, as well. These options are similar to those discussed above, with the notable exception that with the Advanced Image Search, you can specify size and coloration of images.

Beyond the ordinary uses of the Google tools, users can create a Custom Search Engine, provided you have a Google Account. With this option, you can look through one specific web site, multiple sites, or even specific web pages. You will be able to host the search box and post results on your own web site, as well. This option can benefit your business, non-profit organization, or even your blog! You can also use the "SafeSearch" filtering technology, through the customizing feature.
Another helpful feature for busy people is www.google.com/searchhistory that can be accessed with a Google Account. Log on and review the pages that you visited recently, including Google searches, web pages, images, and videos. You can remove items from your web history, if you wish. It should be noted that Google has been criticized for placing cookies on user's computers to store preferences, and past searches. This enables the company to track search terms; data is retained for up to one year.
There are so many options through the search engines provided by Google for users to find both general and very specific information and images. Explore the various options and see what works best for you or your organization. Definitely consider signing up for a Google Account to maximize the options available. Run a few sample searches and see what works best, or if you need additional assistance. Google is definitely there to help, and has a great deal of resources to see that you find the information you are seeking!

Hate my hub? Let me know! Don't forget to vote if you like it, though!
No, I love your hub, so I vote thumbs up! One thing I noticed about Google and other U.S. based search engines is that they seem to exclude sites from other countries.
I do a lot of research on languages, and I find that I really have to pull off some clever tricks at times to get in touch with servers, for example, in Germany or England.
I wonder if that is because I am using English words to search, although using other languages does not always give me what I am searching for either.
Another gret hub packed with information! Thanks for keeping me reading - always the measure of a great article/site for me!
Take care
Paul
Thanks guys and gal!
Yeah Jenny, this time you were the fastest! :)
Cheff Jeff, no, search engines use your IP address to determine where you are, and serve results accordingly. You can try to use proxy server located in Germany for German results, this may help.
Paul, I tried to do my best :)
I'm still trying to learn all this tech stuff, Misha, so I thank you for enlightening me about how Google works. Thumbs up from me, too.
Wow Misha,
You've given birth to another hub. Congratulations!
To Chef Jeff - and anyone else who wants to see Google results for a specific country, region, etc.
There's a Firefox addon called Google Global that does this beautifully.
Get it at
http://www.redflymarketing.com/blog/google-global-
Thanks for posting that link, Eric - it has been driving us nuts trying to work out what US-based searchers get shown when searching for our keywords. We'll be downloading that right about now ...
Your google came in very apt time. thank you
Someone told me they saw me on google so I am looking thank you
I've never used Google search engine very much - always Yahoo, and been very happy with it. But, I did get a gmail account for HubPages and it's definitely better than my Yahoo accounts - which I've had for years.
great informative hub, now i know more as i'm beginning to use it more so this helps. thank you.
I luv the cache feature which lets you look at sites that may no longer exist. Good hub Misha.
Thanks a lot for stopping by and commenting :)
Eric,
I did not know about this plugin - thanks a bunch! I have Russian site, and always struggle with Google. Gonna give it a try right away, thanks again.
CW,
I too have both mail accounts, and Yahoo is the oldest and a paid one :)
Clara,
Did not hear from you for ages, it's nice to know you are still around :)
I'm trying to figure out how you only have 7 hubs published and yet 475 fans!!!!
That's amazing.
I guess the key is quality, not quantity.
I'm glad that Google Global will be useful to so many. It's a great Plugin.
Dutch84: No mystery, and nothing to do with the quality of his hubs. Misha has got so many fans because he charms all the good looking girls who sign up at hubpages. They then feel sorry for him, and become a fan of his :-) :-)
Well, that's my theory - Because it took him ages to become my fan!
you've done it again Misha - very nice! Thumbs up from me too.
For the last 5 months, the things I discovered other than research purposes have completely keep me in awe of Mr. Google's power.
I think Misha's choice of pictures is a part and parcel of what Eric calls 'Misha's charm'. (My 2C + interest.)
I use Google for so many things now. I just downloaded the google tool Picassa for pictures. It seems like Google is becoming more and more intuitive for users needs.I also like Gmail alot. It makes e-mailing really easy.Great information on the Big "G".Thumbs up!
It´s always great to read Misha´s hubs specially when they are new ones :P
Google it´s the SE that gives me the best results but it´s always nice to see which links other SE comes up with. Thanks for showing me the search history feature ;)
Have fun searching! :D
I don't pay for either of my Yahoo email accounts. You do?
Thanks for the tip, Eric, and Misha - great hub, glad to see it's generating a lot of positive comments!
Thanks a bunch friends!
Dutch, Eric is right - what goes around comes around, and I am probably a fan of a couple of thousand people now.
Eric, I always need more time to get familiar with guys :P
CW, I switched to paid account a few years ago. I pay $12 (or $20? - I don't remember) for year, and have unlimited storage and no ads. Other than that it's the same.
Louise, Zylla, Dorsi, Ricardo, and Jeff - thanks for your kind words :)
I am a big fan of Google and most things the company has on offer..My hub titled "Google is more than just a search engine" was made because many people i knew were unaware of all the products and other many services Google has.
Gr8 hub Misha;)
Google is a serious force on the www, but they have been doing some crazy updates with their algo over the last few months.
Sweet Hub ~ Ryan
Google is a powerful search engine and i always use it.At last a new hub appeared after a long time. Now there willbe again break time.Mysterious...
Thanks for the info Misha ... I would like to go on record as saying Google frightens me, not because it is becoming a "monster," but because, when I read the name, I see "Go ogle," illustrating the only problem I have with the Internet. I don't want to be ogled, or Googled.
Anyway, super informative Hub, friend.
Good article bro. I'm new here so this is definitely information and lingo that will be well used.
Google is the best search engine ever. Many people believes that Digg will be the one that replace google, but I do not really think so.
Digg??? Are you kidding me?
Hey sweetie good to hear from you again and my thumbs up too. I love Google and the neat things they do with their name on the top. I tried to let them know but couldn't find a way to tell them. Any ideas? How in the heck are you? I am fine..been a long time no hear...Love G-Ma :o) hugs
Hi G-Ma,
Thanks for stopping by. :) Well, they are not too open in this area, and the only way I can think about is gblog@google.com - which is feedback address for official google blog.
Love and hugs :)
Compusmart, why didn't you post link to your hub? Deleting comments with relevant links is not among my sins :)
Topstuff, sorry - but this is how I publish :)
Crash Jones, we have it recorded, no worries :)
RyanRE and Bueller's Way - thanks for stopping by and dropping a comment :)
Nice Hub - Thumbs Up from me to you and google - I think that the fact that many other search engines now use the results from google says it all - If you cant beat them - Join Them - and they are not beating google.
Lovely review and commentary - I did not realise that G had so many features!
Thanks for the tips, now I know what else I have to platy around with to increasy my position for keywords.
ty! u r 2 kind:)

Thank you,
Carol
Very informative, thanks!
Hi Misha,
This is another good hub similar to the rocking and informative Google Homepage of yours. I always like to learn from you. In fact I do keep a watch on your hubs and useful comments here in HubPages community. Thank you for sharing.
God bless you and family.
Great information!!!!
Now that Microsoft has abandoned the takeover bid for Yahoo and with Yahoo apparently endorsing Google's search network by going into a partnership with Google search, Google seems to be destined to have the final word in online advertising and search.I wonder what this will mean for YPN and Yahoo search in the long run.A Google fan here:)
great hub , this is actually the first time i've read one of your hubs or not can't remember I read a lot of them but anyway informative wonderful hub ......
started using goggle only a month ago and i'm glad to have checked on your hubs to find this article. thank you for the great info.
I hate monopoly.....bad for us...the ordinary users
I would like to see MSN, Yahoo and Google fight vigorously in Internet, that would be good for us
Great Hub, thanks! Sometimes when I know a thing is on a certain site and I'd rather not search through the site for it I go to google and use the "site:***" feature.
I just read a book on google search the other day, its called Google Power, by Chris Sherman. Interesting how studying what people search for makes for helpful ways to produce marketing ideas.
Great hub and lots of good replies too - Thanks
Google seems to have captured the whole Internet business thing. They are just too intelligent at this.
Great hub. Let me know if you figure out Google's algorithm for search. :)
Interesting and useful info.
By the way, thanks for joining my fan club.
CVR
Interesting and useful info. keep up the good work
There is more to this google search thing than I thought. Thanks for "showing" the way. :)
Thumbs up here and on Stumble, Misha. Great hub!
Lots of interesting things to search on google. Nice.

Hi Misha,
Another fantastic hub packed with information, my friend. This is very beneficial for new people on the internet like myself. Keep up the good work!
*smiles*
Great hub..good info.Thanks!
Great information on Google Search Engine. My favorite feature is the spelling -- it's the fastest way to find the correct spelling of difficult words.
Its very nice about google search. Its very useful information. Thanks for sharing valuable information.
hi,
another thumbs up!
sukkran
Very good and informative hub. Thanks to you.
This is a great hub - very good information to know!
very good information
This was very interesting. Frankly I am a dog pile fan. I find there is less clutter on the front page. And I am figuring in the long run less space taken up on my computer- with all that blitz when you open it.
I do have a goggle tool bar, just in case- and do use it at times. I use them all -=really. That way it’s never biased by any giant.
I thought it really came down to this.
Internet searches are the most valuable real estate on earth, and the top search’s come down to who pays to be there or who knows how to sit on the machine and over ride the search. I know some can master that... hit
My brain just can’t compute sitting on the computer that long. I see this scored you high and I am certain that is your goal. And it’s obvious- you know how to do it with less feed and higher volume.
Best wishes Mr speedo I enjoyed reading your things this morning. You obviously know what you have and how to use it. LOL
Hi Tiara,
Thank you for this very nice comment :)
Misha, I read your friend, Joshua Nester's blog earlier this evening. He and you both help a lot of us with this stuff that we don't really understand. Thanks for that!
Hi Shirley :)
Always glad when you stop by. :)
And I am glad you liked his blog, the guy knows what he is talking about.
Funny avatar you got, but to tell you the truth I like your lovely face a lot better :)
Nice hub. I love google for it's being user friendly and simple.
Thanks, Misha but I couldn't figure out how to take the leprechaun's out and put mine in. :) I'll be back after St. Paddy's Day.
I WANT TO ASK SOME SCIENCE QUESTION
I WANT PENPAL FRIENDS FROM ALL OVER THEWORLD
THANKS.
I like this hub. Keep up the great work
Thanks guys and gals :)
I love the pics. =)
Thanks, it was the hardest part of hub publishing :)
Hahaha. Hard . . .
Believe it or not, but finding good pics takes longer than writing or ordering a text and putting everything together - combined :)
Oh! u are a great hubber Misha..nice hub...
I like to read technical hubs,...
Thanks Apeksha :)
Yes! Google is No.1 search engine of the internet world. We can get any information about any product or any part of the world. I use Google to get any more information about latest news
Thanks for stopping by Ratnaveera :)
NICE STUFFS
good hub
it is so weird to think that a few years ago google didn't even exist but now whenever you need an answer to a question you just pop it into google and get your answers within seconds. That's how i found out details about Michael Jackson. RIP.
Thanks for visitng guys and gals :)
Yep, Kitty, it's amazing :)
I have to admit of course that using google is just second nature now. Anything you want to know, just google it and you will most likely find the answer. Well at least that is true for basicquestions you may have. But I can't help but think that when you are searching for information more specialized, there are a large quanity of pages with nothing more than ads appearing high in the search results. No real content, no info to answer your questions. Just links [no doubt revenue generating for the page owner] to other sites that just may deliver the answer. Yahoo is not much better of course. However, Bing.com at the moment does seem to be a little better in this area. It may not happen immediately, but I have a feeling that Bing is going to start taking away a lot of google traffic over the coming year or two. If it does, it can only be positive for us all, as we see google hitting back by perhaps solving some of the issues that draw away so many of its current users.
It looks like Bing is giving some nice competition to the Google.
Google surely needs to keep pace with Bing.
ummm, aren't you too fast? give it some time at least, so far they are not even close LOL
Google is still on number one position lets see what Bing can do for internet community.
Thanks for stopping by Prasan. Let's see, but I am not holding my breadth. Neither MSN nor Live were able to seriously compete...
Interesting hub about how people use
the computer to search ideas. Misha
your Google hub is packed with information.
Thank You!
Thanks Websclubs, I tried to do my best :)
Good hub Misha, enjoyed reading that. Personally I haven't got on with Bing so far, I enjoy the Google experience a lot more.
Thanks for coming Ryan :)
have a nice day
thanks for hub i like to read keep rocking
Thanks for stopping by Rocky :)
Thanks for sharing Misha! Google truly is an amazing search engine. It seems to do an excellent job separating the spam from the good material.
Keep up the good writing (I'm new to hubpages & am still trying to "find my groove".)
Hi Jessica, glad you came. :) Yeah, it truly is. :)
Nice hub, keep them coming.!!
