Google is a Phonebook

I have stopped using phone directory for the past few years, why do we need a Phonebook when we can use Google as a Phonebook.

Google search helps us to find the phone numbers of friends or family we are looking for. With simple keywords you can find the phone number, address and map information. You can only search the publicly listed phone numbers not the private or unlisted phone numbers.

To search for a residential phone number, addresses, map information, use any of the following combinations in the Google Search Box or in the Google Toolbar. e.g. Phonebook: Smith, Chicago, Il

1.) Phonebook: first name (or first initial), last name, city (state is optional)

2.) Phonebook: first name (or first initial), last name, area code

3.) Phonebook: first name (or first initial), last name, zip code

4.) Phonebook: phone number, including area code

5.) Phonebook: last name, city, state

6.) Phonebook: last name, zip code

To have your residential phone and address information removed from the Google Phonebook, click here.

To search for a business phone number, we cannot use the same options, but instead try it at Google Maps; it will give plenty of options. If you have a mobile, you can call the phone number directly from the search result. Here is an example to search for Pizza in Chicago, Illinois.

If you have a good suggestion for the above, please add it in the comment area. Thanks.

You are correct, Google is a good reference for all kinds of info including tel #, but some people don't have or use a computer especially older people. They have to call on the phone for their info and get charged, or look it up in the telephone book. The distribution of telephone books should be optional and not distributed to every houshold every year. Its a waste of paper and trees.

Actually they can give the books in the form of digital files, why waste paper. I just recycle them as soon as I get it.

Thanks for the tip. Didn't know this existed, so I played with it. Very un-google like for searching in that the syntax is highly structured. Type the exact format or no results. Would have expected Google to make it more free form, or use a form to fill in what info you have. The help description doesn't give examples. Useful, if you remember how to use it! Nice Hub as always cgull8m.

Thanks Jstankevicz, can you tell me what you typed, because I tried various combinations it worked. The reason we have to use the above query is because Google has already a database of all these results and it is easy for them to give the results in a better way. Also without Phonebook prefix, we will be given millions of results and it will be difficult for us to search.

There is a Google Phonebook button for Google Toolbar 5, by clicking the button we can search phone numbers from name and zip code: http://www.google.com/ig/directory?synd=toolbar&so

It is called Google Phonebook Gadget.

You can also use other prefixes like Wikipedia: info, IMDB: info to search for specific information from that sites.

Thanks C. Does this work in England? Google usually develops it for worldwide use.
