Gothic Still Life Painting
66Roses and Wax Head
Eggs (after Casorati)
Information about the pintings and the Artist
Most of these were pictures painted in London, but some were done in Florianopolis.
All are oil on canvas.
The style of these paintings is traditional, being derived from the tonal painting of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, most particularly Fantin Latour and Balthus.
The main element of novelty is in the subject more than the treatment, which is broadly "Gothic" in character. That is, it is concerned with the living within the dead, and the dead within the living, with the world of shadows, dreams; and the life of the mind.
As such it should be seen in the context of other still life painters such as Odilon Redon, Magritte and de Giorgio Chirico, and contrasted with the exterior views which were the subject of the last two exhibitions at CIC and Café Matisse; some of these can also be seem on Hub.
