Government Spending and the Boston Tea Party
59Our state government is at a stalemate.
Perhaps it will shut down.
To be perfectly honest .. that would not bother me at all for from what I understand all essential services will still have to be in order. Perhaps its time for our people in government to face the reality of what to do when money runs out.
It is not to take more... without even asking.
They tax us with a swipe of their pens.
Some of our government employees are even ready to forego their salaries if it means forcing our government to face that reality... the reality of having to really truly budget..... not their money.... but ours.... and to make cuts when you have to ... like every single one of us has to.... like every single business has to... when faced with a shortage of cash.
Our Governor threatens us with the things that she feels will force us to relent and let the pressure off ... allowing our representatives to take the easy way out and give her what she wants.
Our grandparents' healthcare, our childrens education, our public safety... she has all the buttons in play and is using them relentlessly.
It reminds me of when our local school wants a new mill passed. The first tool they use is the school bus service. It will shut down. Then it is the sports. There will be no sports.
It concerns me that our government spends our money so blatantly irresponsibly.... threatening us in ways that appeal to our emotions if we dare to stand up and say no.
What bothers me is that we... the people.... have stood by and allowed them to do so.
We scream over the rising cost of gas ... over the rising cost of cable service .... over the rising cost of liquor.
How can we not be at least just as concerned over the rising cost of government?
How much does your government today cost you?
The greatest voice we have in our government is our vote.
The next is our actions through phone calls and letters to our representatives we vote into offices. They do hear those voices after they are elected but we must all be let ourselves be heard.
It will be very interesting to see how the "crisis" in my state unfolds.
I think of the Boston Tea Party.
Perhaps this is ours.
... an update...
Our state legislators just passed the biggest tax raise in its history... here in a state struggling to survive.
They gave in to a governor who threatened them as children.... ordering drawbridges to be raised if a shutdown occured.. ordering campers out of the state parks at midnight.... silly childish stuff... threats... "you do this or else" stuff.
Our legislators had an opportunity of a lifetime to shut this government down and once and for all force this governor to face the fact that the spending has to stop .... that the entitlement programs have to be cut back... along with all the staff it takes to keep them in place. They wimped out.... by one vote... and that one vote could be attributed to the representative in my district who did not stand up for the constituents who put him in office.
It is a sad day for my state... for all the people in this state.
