GPS wrist watches

GPS wrist watches are simply a normal wrist watch with a GPS aerial mounted inside, that allow you to utilize the GPS network to pinpoint your precise location on earth.

The GPS network is a group of 24 satellites that orbit the earth and broadcast signals to earth. By determining the position of the satellite when it projected it's signal, a GPS can calculate, with a high degree of accuracy your exact location on the globe.

From changes in location data, other information can be determined such as instantaneous speed and pace, which direction you are moving, the distance you have covered in a certain time as well as how to get from point A to point B and backtrack to your starting location.

GPS wrist watches offer numerous benefits over normal wrist watches and hand-held GPS units. Since they are small, they can be comfortably worn on the wrist. GPS wrist watches do tend to be slightly bulkier than a normal wrist watch due to the necessity of housing an aerial, but are becomming smaller with each new generation of watch.

The main uses of GPS wrist watches are measurement of speed, distance and pace in performance sports watches and navigation in watches for hikers and adventurers, although there are many hybrids around that do both.

The major brands of GPS wrist watches are Garmin, Suunto, Timex, Polar and GlobalSat.
