Grand Rapids Car Insurance
66When shopping for Grand Rapids car insurance, you are required to have 3 things. Liability insurance, Personal Injury Protection (PIP), and Property Protection Insurance (PPI). Here they are explained in more detail:
1. 20/40/10
A/B/C is how you will see the liability coverage options when you are shopping for auto insurance in the Michigan area. What does 20/40/10 mean? It means that you are required to have at least $20,000 in bodily injury liability for one person, $40,000 in bodily injury liability for all people in an accident, and $10,000 in property damage liability. Bodily injury liability covers the medical expenses for other people in an accident. Property damage liability covers the property damage done to another car or to another piece of property, be it a house or a bus shelter.
Michigan is a no fault state, meaning that if you are involved in an accident, your insurance company will pay for your expenses and the insurance company of the other party involved will pay for their expenses, regardless of who caused the accident (who was at fault). You don't have to worry about a litigation attorney from the other party. Because your insurance company will pay for your expenses, regardless of who caused the accident, the state of Michigan requires that you, along with your 20/40/10 in minimum liability coverage, have Personal Injury Protection (PIP) as well as Property Protection Insurance (PPI).
2. Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
If you happen to get in an accident, regardless of whose fault it was, you will get payments courtesy of your PIP. Benefits from PIP include:
Paid medical expenses. Depending on the type of policy you have, you'll either get all of your medical expenses paid, regardless of how much your health insurance pays you, or paid medical expenses for whatever amount your health insurance can't pay. Unlike all the other following PIP benefits, medical expense payments, as long as you need them, will last for the rest of your life and are permanent.
Paid transportation expenses: In case you can't drive.
Wage loss benefits: You'll get paid 85% of your lost salary for up to 3 years.
Replacement services: You'll get an allowance to hire people to do work for you which you can't do in your injured state. The limit is $20 per day for 3 years.
3. Property Protection Insurance (PPI)
PPI covers the property damange in the event that your car hits a parked car or a nonmoving piece of property, such as telephone poll, a bus shelter, etc.
Optional/Recommended Insurance
Collision insurance: Covers the damage to your car whether or no you are responsible for the accident. It, along with comprehensive insurance (mentioned below) is usually required when you finance or lease your car. It is recommended when you are shopping for car insurance in Grand Rapids because the other driver might not have the adequate property damage liability coverage to pay you.
Comprehensive insurance: Covers damage to your car, which is not caused by a collision. This would include accidents/damage having to do with wildlife, theft, or weather.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: Protects you in the event that you get into an accident with an uninsured/underinsured driver. For more information on this these types of insurance, check out Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage.
