What If You Hate Golf?
76One thing I must say from the start is I really think golf is a boring sport. I have never had an interest in putting a little ball into a hole, and even playing miniature golf was not that fun for me. However, if you are a golfer I know of a beautiful place where you can play golf and live too. This is beautiful Grass Valley Lake in Lake Arrowhead, California. I grew up a couple of miles from Grass Valley Lake and I used to walk down there all the time. Grass Valley Lake has a really cute park next to the lake where you can have a picnic. If you are a member of the Lake Arrowhead Country Club you can even play golf at this very upscale golf course. If you are looking for a beautiful home within walking distance of the golf course, there are many picturesque homes to choose from. I will warn you right away, homes next to the Grass Valley golf course are not cheap. Also, with the threat of fire danger in the San Bernardino Mountains I would not recommend living there because you will have to buy a really expensive home owner's insurance. Do not get me wrong, life in the mountains is great for raising a family and I am glad I grew up there, but it is not the most affordable place to live in the world. With the recurrent fire danger you may want to reconsider living up there permanently, but you could visit for the weekend and this is much safer.
However, if you want to buy a house near Grass Valley Lake and become a member of the country club you can, but it is not inexpensive. There are things I would rather do besides golf, so I will share these things with you here.
Take A Walk Down To Grass Valley Lake
If you decide to stay at a hotel or cabin up in Lake Arrowhead you can always take a walk down to Grass Valley Lake. Lake Arrowhead Village tends to be a little on the touristy side, but Grass Valley Lake is less so. You can just drive down to Grass Valley Lake and take some beautiful pictures if that is all you feel like doing. Better yet, buy a picnic lunch at the grocery store and enjoy the view at the park next to Grass Valley Lake. In the distance you will be able to watch the golfers, which is much cheaper than paying to live up here and golf. Also, it is more fun!
Talk A Walk At The The Indian Camp Trail
Drive out to Highway 173 and take a walk on the one mile path leading to the Indian Rock Camp. The Indian Rock Camp trail is very easy to walk on, thus it would be appropriate for the entire family. Once you get there you can admire the impression made in the metate rocks by the Serrano Indian women. Back up until the late 1700's before the Spanish missionaries had come and changed the Serrano's way of life, this group would go up to the San Bernardino Mountains every fall and collect acorns from the oak trees. Metate is the Spanish word for mortar, and in the Aztec and Mayan cultures people used metates to grind corn. In the small Serrano (means mountains in Spanish) of the San Bernardino Mountains the women used metates to grind acorn meal, which was made into tortilla like food. I admire the Serrano women who spent hours of back breaking labor to make food for their family each fall in the San Bernardino Mountains. Just think, these women did not have refrigerators and they had to sort out the rotten acorns to ensure their meal would be edible for making tortillas. Visiting the metatee rocks at the Indian Rock Camp is much more interesting than play golf. Just a suggestion of some of the sites you can see while visiting the San Bernardino Mountains.

Thanks sirdent. I always just say what I think about a topic though. I am sure all golf enthusiasts love the sport, but I just never felt like playing it. Plus I am really bad a miniature golf, so I cannot imagine I would be much better at regular golf. So for thus hub I decided to think of all the pretty and beautiful alternatives to playing golf on the mountain. If you like golf you can become a member and play up there though. I am sure it is fun for golf enthusiasts.
I suck at miniature golf also. It's just how it is. :P I haven't played golf in many many years though.
Maybe you can try it again and write a hub about it :).
Maybe. Golfing is kind of expensive to do if done right. Green fees are kind of high.
It is so expensive at the country club in Lake Arrowhead. This is probably why I never played golf because if something is expensive, I want it to be something I want to do. Like splurging for that trip to Tahiti or Hawaii. Just have to find my passport and brush up on French, and win the lottery!
I am up for a trip to Hawaii or Tahiti. Let me know when you win the lottery. :P
I just keep wasting my money on it in hopes, but maybe one of these days. I will surely let you know :). Tried to get some good ideas from ProCW, but I am hopeless with the lottery.
My oipinion is playing the lottery is a waste of money anyway.
Yes it is. One can always hope.
I actually love mini golf, I am not to bad at it, Faith loves it as well. I have been to the Country club a number of times, it is nice. But I have only been there to swim, and only because my friends parents were members.
SirDent have you thought about trying a public golf course, I imagine they are quite a bit cheaper. Also some community colleges have golf courses, I know Crafton Hills in Yuciapa has one, very pretty scenery in my opinion anyhow.
I keep hoping to win the lottery as well, but as they say, you gotta play it to win it.
My dad worked on the electrical there in the 90's, but that is the only connection I have with it. It is very pretty to look at, but since I am not a golf player I just am not interested. Thanks for the tips on low cost golft in the area.
I think what I love about golf is the social connection and the bantering...like yourself I`m a history buff and love a good story...If I hit a good shot great!!! but if not ..no biggeeeeee....great pic`s of the lake
Mike :0)
Mike,
History is so much fun so I know what you mean. I am glad you enjoy golf and maybe you can see the San Bernardino Mountains one day. It is a very pretty place.
Well it's pretty, but not for golf....*shudders*. I'd much rather play music there and spend a week living in the wilderness. Just my opinion though ;)
You know there are lots of Christian camps that operate year around up in Lake Arrowhead, so maybe you can someday :). That way you can incorporate two things you like.
That's been on my mind at times...I'd definitely be interested in it!
Well let me know if you ever do. I hope you can.
Heck anything is better than I'm doing rigth now. Besides, I'm a musician and I'd have the ability to use those skills daily. My dream job is playing music as a career, but this would be a good route too!
Well wish you good luck with that. Basically I doing anything to make money, even if it is not my dream job. I would love to have full time right now, but part time jobs and writing online helps to pay the bills until I find the full time I need.
I really like working at the library though, that I cannot complain about.
Hm...prayers for that. I understand working what you have to do til then. It's frustrating to say the elast as I am doing it now.
Oh I am very happy with my life for the most part. I just want a full time position in one place, at the library eventually and hopefully. I work at the library, and I write here online, so I am able to pay the bills. However, I would like to have full time hopefully. I keep applying for jobs in the surrounding area that pay better, but eventually I will find one. However, I a very grateful I can pay my bills and live the type of life I do today. I hope you can find your dream position also.
Hi Sweetiepie -
I hear myself talking in the first two sentences you wrote - LOL! I like faster sports like Basketball, soccer and I do like football. I can't stand watching baseball either unless it's a Tball team!
Great pics. Sounds like a great place to go for an adventurous outing to learn about history and culture.
Happy Thanksgiving if I don't type at you before then!
christinekv,
Thanks for stopping by :). Yes Lake Arrowhead is very beautiful and I recommend seeing it if you are ever the Southern California area. I can see what you mean by liking faster sports as I do not like golf, but what I do like is gymnastics and ice skating. I am not athletic mind you, but I enjoy watching these on TV. I used to run a lot and I wanted to be in a marathon, but ever since I got sciatica I cannot do that anymore.
However, I still love rugged hiking up in the mountains, which to me is so much better than playing golf LOL. The Indian Rock Camp is a very special place to me because I used to run and walk out there, so I feel a connection to this place. I used to place my hand over the impressions made by the mortars, and some how I felt a connection to the women who used to grind the acorns.
Unfortunately there is very little research about the Serrano Indians, which truly upsets me because during my Senior Thesis as a BA History major I had wanted to write about this group.
I ended up writing about Sacajawea because there is far more research on this topic.
I hope you have a great Thanks Giving too!
I grew up watching cricket at home (or rather forced to since my dad and bro like it so much). In front of my appartment now there is a beautiful golf course and my manager loves golf. I just don't even know the basics of golf (I tried watching it once in TV but it apparently isn't a spectator sport for newbies unlike Baskatball or Baseball).
You know, I hate golf too. This certainly looks like a great place to hunt and fish. Do you think they would allow me to fly me helicopter in and shoot some game?
I hope you like it if you try it. One thing about this hubmob is it gave me the courage to proclaim, I do not like golf! For years people made me feel odd or strange because I was not interested in this sport, but now I no longer feel this way. I know what I like, and I like what I like, so I just think there are more fun things to do than play golf. Walking is my main form of exercise these days.
You can always call the tourism bureau and ask Sarah Palin. I really could not answer you question about that.
Thank you Sweetie Pie. I think we are going to get along really well.
I hope you have a great night.
Crazy golf is as good as it gets for me to enjoy this sport! Not sure if i could enjoy anything that over looks a golf course!!
:)
Is crazy golf a special kind of playing? Just curious :).
I agree, golf is boring.
I did not even like miniature golf, so I guess some people will be upset about that. By the way, they opened a miniature golf/water park amusement park near here called Pharaoh's Lost Kingdom and now it is out of business. The entire premise of the park was about playing miniature golf near models of the Egyptian pyramids, and being able to go down a water slide into a fake Egyptian oasis. Many of us back in the 1990's thought this concept would never work and after ten years they went out of businesses. There has been talk of revamping the place into a nightclub for adults, but that has not happened yet either. Interesting life span for a miniature golf park, but I hope the new owners can do better with it I suppose.

Nice lake. I used to love playing golf. It isn't as boring playing as it is to watch. Great hub with great photos.
