Snoring: The Nocturnal Plague

Snorers get a lot of flak thanks to the incredible noise they make when they sleep. They can be the subject of ridicule too. Admit it--we're sure you laughed at a snorer at some point in your life, or exchanged looks with someone else whenever a snorer has made a spectacularly peculiar snorting sound.

It is absolutely essential for snoring to be cured by the right snoring remedies--and not just because it's a loud, funny, disruptive noise. Snoring is a perfectly normal act, but exceptionally loud or chronic snoring can be a sign that something may be wrong with the snorer's health. Before embarking on any snoring cures, there's a real need to figure out what causes the snoring before applying any stop snoring remedies.

Why Do People Snore?

There are many causes of snoring, but the general consensus is that snoring is acused both by physiological factors as well as your lifestyle. When your throat's air passageways are narrow or blocked, your snoring will then become louder and more intense. This is because air vibrates against your mouth and throat muscles as you breathe in and out during your sleep; a narrower airway makes it harder for air to make its way. The airway is blocked by certain things. It could be because you are overweight and therefore have more fat building up around your neck. It could be because you take in too many substances such as tobacco smoke that thickens your throat's lining. You might also be consuming too much dairy food, particularly before you sleep; this causes mucus to accumulate in your throat and make it harder for your throat to accommodate the air flowing in and out. Alcohol is another culprit, because its substances causes the mouth's muscles and throat tissues to relax, thereby creating less space in the throat.

Of course, if you're suffering from a cold, this could also be making you snore, since you are having difficulty breathing overall.

Once you've figured out the reason for your snoring, you'll probably have a good idea which snoring remedies you should use.

Natural Snoring Remedies

There are no herbs and supplements that can completely rid you of snoring; your best bet is to simply change your lifestyle and habits to kick snoring forever without the use of any supposed miracle cures, drugs, or equipment. For starters, try to eat more healthful, nutrient-rich food in order to help you lose weight. Losing weight can work wonders--you'll be able to breathe and move more easily, plus you will be able to shed the fat around your neck.

Make it a point to consume less dairy products, and forgo it entirely in favor of drinks sch as hot tea blended with honey before going to bed. You should also beat your smoking and drinking habits in order to cleanse your mouth and throat of any unwanted substances.

Another natural snoring remedy is to do mouth exercises to strengthen your tongue and mouth muscles. This prevents them from slackening and falling back into your throat whenever you lie in bed. Such exercises simply involve moving the tongue, making it more flexible, and working your jaw to enable it to clamp down more firmly.

And the most highly recommended snoring remedy of all? Sleep on your side. Whenever you sleep on your back, your mouth's muscles tend to droop, and this doesn't happen so much whenever you sleep on your side. Have an extra pillow ready on your bed to keep you from fully lying flat on your back as you sleep.

Other Stop Snoring Remedies

Sometimes, you might need a little extra help to end your snoring once and for all. Some items are designed specifically to help cure snoring problems.

Nasal strips. These strips are placed across the nose and have been widely praised as a good way to ease breathing and prevent snoring.

Specially designed pillows. Because sleeping on your back tends to worsen snoring, these pillows are made to keep you from lying down with your head all the way back. Some of these are elevated, a feature which helps people suffering from nasal congestion.

Throat sprays. These work as a sort of lubricant for the mouth, thus helping air pass through the mouth and throat more easily without creating strong vibration and snoring.

Mouthpieces. Much like mouthpieces used to prevent grinding your teeth at night, these are placed inside your mouth to keep your mouth and throat tissues from blocking your airway when you sleep. You can ask your dentist to mold a mouthpiece for you in order to create one that is most comfortable for your mouth.

So Should You Get Surgery to Cure Snoring?

The answer: Only if all else fails, and even then, you should consult your doctor and do some research to find out if surgery has really been effective in curing snoring forever. For all you know, your snoring may be eliminated temporarily, but return should you revert to an unhealthy lifestyle again, making your investment and effort a complete waste.
