How do you pick a great wedding gift?  The best advice is to keep it simple, and personal.  Today, many couples use registry.  Buy a gift off the registry, or a gift that works with one of the items on the registry is a smart idea.  This is a great way to buy the couple something they will love and use.  

If you are very good friends with the couple buy something personal.  Think of things you have done with the couple and pick something you know they don't have.  Thoughtfulness goes a long way. Or, try buy something that you know fits into their interest (as a couple).  Don't buy the groom sports stuff, or something that is only for one half of the couple.  A great idea is to buy tickets to something they can do together.

Special note -- If you are traveling to the wedding from far away, it's okay to give a less expensive gift.  The couple will understand you spent money to attend the event.

If you don't know the couple well go for an all purpose gift.  All purpose gifts can include -- picture frame, vase, and dishes.  Just because you know the bride doesn't mean you know the couple.  Another great all purpose gifts include a gift certificate.

The most important thing to remember when giving a gift is that the gift is for them no you.  You should not buy something you like, but something they will like.  If all else fells, do a group gift.  Team up with someone else who is invited to the wedding to buy something more expensive than you could on your own.
