Apollo's Origin

Greek God Apollo was the son of Zeus (King of the olympian gods) and Leto who also gave birth to his twin sister Artemis (the goddess of hunting). Hera, Zeus wife tried to prevent the birth of Leto and Zeus but Leto managed to find refuge at the island of Delos where she gave birth to Apollo.

Apollo's Attributes and Powers

Apollo is always depicted as a young handsome man without beard that in most cases is carrying a lyre (a musical instrument). He is considered by many to be the god of sun, however that is not true since the god of sun was Helius. Apollo was the god of music and poetry (hence the lyra) as well as the god of prophecies. For this reason Delphi, the largest and most important oracle in ancient Greece was dedicated to him. Finally, he was considered to be the god of archery and healing.

Apollo Myths

Some of the myths regarding the greek god Apollo include:

  1. Slaying of Python the serpent: Python was the guardian of the Delphi oracle and was slayed by Apollo when he claimed the oracle.

  3. Slaying of the Cyclopes: Apollon slayed the cyclopes because thy forged the lightning that killed his son Asclepius.
  4. Defeating Titius the Giant: Apollo in order to protect his mother killed Titius, a giant that was ordered by Hera to attack Leto.
