Green Clothes for a Greener Earth

Green Clothes
Since I love clothes almost as much as I love our beautiful earth, I've long been frustrated that I've not been able to find attractive and comfortable clothing that is also ethical and sustainable. I am all about celebrating the love of living green - even in our closets! I'm excited about the latest fabrics, designers, fashion shows that are all the buzz in the news today. I'm not the type to preach or criticize, as I'm sure there will always be times when sincere people can have sincerely differing opinions of what exactly constitutes "green". We're all in this together, striving for the same beautiful thing!
For instance, did you know that they are making sweaters now from bamboo and soybean that rival cashmere for beauty and softness!? Because bamboo grows so quickly, it is a resource that is not only sustainable, but actually gives back to the environment. Soy, which is now being called the “vegetable cashmere” is another great renewable resource. It is a byproduct of the pulp which is left over from the production of tofu and soymilk.
Organic Cotton is another great choice for earth friendly fabrics. While it may not seem any more sustainable than just ordinary cotton, the benefits are far greater. For instance, weeds are picked largely by hand, which is beneficial to employment. Furthermore, while regular cotton crops use a full quarter of the world’s insecticides and 10% of the world’s pesticides, organic cotton uses none labeled possible, likely or probably known human carcinogens. What that means is that they can cause all sorts of cancer, they are endocrine disrupters, can cause developmental disabilities in children. Need any other reasons to switch to organic?
Using hemp and bamboo in a T-shirt is far more anti-microbial than regular cotton, making it a far superior choice for the gym if for no other reason than the stink factor!! This new "technology" in fabric weaving is the most exciting advancement I've heard of in ages, especially as it pertains to sustainable clothing. Everyone's talking about eco-fashion now. Keep the conversation going! So start painting your closet a brighter shade of green - because everyone looks better in Green Clothes!
