"Green" Household Cleaning Products

Several years ago after I was diagnosed with bladder cancer, I decided it was time I changed my entire outlook and approach to cleaning. I decided to go "green" and switch all of my chemically based household products to natural based products. After trying loads of different brands I've come up with a few favorites, tried and true - that won't hurt your home or environment:

Biokleen Produce Wash. I'm one of those people who HAS to wash every darn piece of fruit or vegetable and this product is great. It contains grapefruit seed oil, orange peel oil, coconut & lime. It doesn't leave any residue once rinsed. It is also great for cleaning counters and cutting boards. A little goes a long way, it's super concentrated!

Mrs. Meyer's Shower Cleaner, Geranium. I'm a big fan of Mrs. Meyer's products and this spray has a refreshing, clean smelling scent. It contains geranium, rose and clove essential oils. Just spray - no need to wipe, scrub or rinse. Now that's my kind of cleaning!

Seventh Generation Natural Laundry Detergent Liquid, Free and Clear. My daughter suffers from contact dermatitis and I am only able to wash her clothes in mild, fragrance free detergents. This product was a life-saver! It's non-toxic, biodegradable, and hypo-allergenic. It leaves no residue and, therefore, is perfect for those with sensitive skin.

Trader Joe's Lavender Dryer Bags. I cannot get enough of the scent of lavender in my life...and these little bags are my absolute favorite. I'm not very fond of those overly perfumed dryer sheets, I just want a nice, clean scent when doing laundry. The bags are reusable (I get about 4-5 dryer cycles out of them).

Ecover Dishwashing Liquid with Lemon & Aloe Vera. Made with plant-based ingredients, it's mild on your hands but tough on grease and leaves no chemical residue on your dishes. Plus, it is biodegradable. It has a pleasant, fresh lemon scent - not too overpowering.

Seventh Generation Natural Fabric Softener Liquid, Lavender. This product makes my laundry soft but not greasy like some products seem to, and it prevents static. It is made with biodegradable ingredients, no dyes or chemicals.

Ecover Cream Scrub. Just like the dishwashing liquid, this product is made with plant based ingredients, is completely biodegradable and works like a charm! I used it to remove wine and coffee stains from my counters. I was skeptical about its effectiveness but it took the stains out of my counter-tops with very little effort. Plus, it is so mild it can be used on any surface.

These natural based products may be a bit more expensive than chemical based products but they are definitely worth the price for your peace of mind.

I just bought my first "green" product at Costco tonight - Wintree lavendar laundry detergent. And I really do want to try out some of these Ecover products - when I do, I'll get them from this hub!!!

Actually, there's a gizmo that will oxidize plain tap water and make it into a safe, non-toxic cleaner that reverts back to water after sanitizing surfaces, etc. It's pretty amazing. Check out my green living blog in my profile and look under "Home & Garden." Fairly recent post.

@Kat07: Thanks...I really do love the Ecover products. I don't know how I lived without them for so long!

@Maddie: Thank you for the info...that sounds cool. I will have to check it out!

@sminut13: It is unfortunate that most local stores don't carry these products. I purchased most of these online. I was able to find the Ecover products at Wegmans in their organic section, and I've noticed that my other local supermarket is also carrying Ecover products. I think its just a matter of time before we see more locally!

I agree - I was shocked to find the bio-friendly detergent at Costco, and began to notice all the other organic products they carry now. It's an important issue, but I think it will also catch on as the next fad (which is a good thing).

Interesting! I am looking to manufacture these types of products here in Canada in the near future with a friend of mine from the Czech republic who is currently doing that there. Do you think that it would be a good venture? We would like to try selling these in Costco stores and other avenues, but not really sure that this market is ready for such an endeavour. Any advice??

APCwiz: I think the market is definitely ready. I have been shopping in the organic section at my local Wegman's for several years (that is where I purchase my Ecover products) and I've noticed that several other local supermarkets are now carrying more 'natural' products. I think the demand for natural products is growing rapidly. Good luck with your venture!

Is there also a green fabric softener out there?

@Kat07: Seventh Generation, Ecover and Mrs. Meyers all make a liquid fabric softener. I use the Seventh Generation Lavender & Eucalyptus fabric softener and love it! I also use dryer balls to help with static cling since I don't use dryer sheets. Mrs. Meyers also carries dryer sheets - they are a bit pricey: $8 for 80...but all natural ingredients!!

@sminut13: As a single mom I am a very budget conscious shopper but I will spend a bit more for the natural products. When I can't find something locallly I can usually find it on Drugstore.com.

So I'm walking through WalMart and I find a new product by Clorox - "green works" natural all-purpose cleaner. Does anybody know if it's really a green product?

Hmmm...I've never heard of it. I'll have to check into it, but my guess is that it is not 'completely' green!

That's my first thought, too - but it says it's made with all natural oils and stuff . . . and now I'm seeing the commercials on TV.

I did check into the Clorox Greenworks, and it looks like the products are 99% natural (plant and mineral based ingredients, biodegradable) but there seems to still be 1% petrochemicals (made from raw materials of petroleum).
