Grey Heron

In spring and summer, look for grey herons along wooded streams and ponds, around lakes, at drainage ditches and in marshes. In winter, green herons move south from northern nesting areas, spending the winter in Florida and the gulf states.

Grey herons wait patiently by the water's edge, often standing on one leg as in the picture below, for fish, frogs, crayfish, insects and other small prey.

Note that this heron is standing on one leg as herons customarily do.

11-5 I encountered my pal the grey heron again today fishing patiently in the same spot. I again tried to sneak up on him for a close-up, but he spotted me before I could get close and flew away.
