Challenge and Opportunity

South Africa is a country of extremes . Here you will find both abundance and poverty . Forest and desert . Drought and floods . Love and hate . A diversity of cultures so rich it will make your head spin . And amidst all the challenges , there is also opportunity .

Yes , we do have our challenges . A shaky power supply , unemployment , crime , and a lack of skills . A relatively weak exchange rate , a government still having growing pains , and the after-effects of past mistakes .

As for the power supply , that is being addressed , but will take some time . Unemployment means plenty of people that can be put to good use , even if they have to be taught additional skills first . The lack of skills mean that people have to be trained , creating opportunity . The diverse cultural mix , combined with a wealth of wildlife , and the most amazing scenery , makes for a perfect tourist destination . And the weak currency makes that even more attractive !

Compared to our neighbours , we have a wealth of resources , a better knowledge base , and a much better infrastructure . We send iron ore to Japan , wine to Europe , and maize to Africa . We export cars , crayfish , fruit , and diamonds . For such a small spot on the map , we take up a lot of space in the marketplace ..............

Like a wise man once said : It's not the size of the bull in the fight , but the size of the fight in the bull..........

Welcome to Hub Pages! My father had colleagues in South Africa way back when. We received the most beautiful post cards and Christmas cards from them every year, full of the scenery of SA.
