House Training A Dog Or Puppy

The dog has been mans best friend for thousands of years and a large part of the reason for that is because a dog is such an intelligent animal. So it might seem odd that a new dog or puppy will mess in all the wrong places and appear to be stupid.

It isn't a lack of intelligence that causes the problem but a lack of knowledge. You need to teach your puppy where it should go to be clean in the house.

Your puppy wants to learn and needs to be shown what to do so house train a puppy should not be too difficult. You need to repeat your instructions and guide your dog to the correct area each time until it begins to understand and once that message is fixed in it's mind it will do everything it can to get to the correct place each time it needs to go.

There will be occasional mistakes when your puppy was so distracted it forgot until the last minute and fails to get there. The important think is to avoid getting annoyed and angry. Positive encouragement is far better for dog training than any amount of anger and abuse.

Congratulate your dog every time it does the right thing and avoid scolding when it fails but you can show your disappointment and this will encourage your new puppy even more because the one thing a dog wants to do is to please it's master or mistress.

Knowing The Signs To Look For

You need to learn a few things too if you want to be a good dog trainer. Particularly with house training there will be signs of discomfort.

Your puppy will start looking uncomfortable. He may have a confused look on his face and may well start to go round in circles. Be vigilant and as soon as you see these signs encourage or move him to the correct place. Congratulate and perhaps reward him when he gets it right.

Remember that a new puppy, just like a new baby, will need to go frequently so don't go thinking that just because he went a little while ago he will not need to defaecate again for ages. He might just surprise you.

In the early days you need to keep a watchful eye on your puppy at all times and be ready to respond as soon as he shows any signs of needing to go to the potty area.

The Benefits Of Crate Training A Dog

Dogs are clean animals if they have the choice and they always keep their bedding area clean so crate training uses this behaviour to help teach puppies to be clean in your home.

If your puppy knows the crate is it's own bedding area it will usually whine to be released when it needs to do it's business. You must be ready to act straight away to take your dog to the potty training area where it will do it's business and you can then congratulate it on a job well done.

This form of training can be much faster in teaching your new puppy the correct thing to do when it needs to go.
