A Look At Satellite TV

HD programming on Satellite TV.

So, are you a cable subscriber wanting to switch to satellite television ? Or have you been living without any cable at all and want to upgrade your home entertainment ? Satellite TV may just be what you need.

In the United States there are two satellite tv providers; Dish Network and DirecTV. Each boast millions of subscribers, and thenumbers keep growing on a daily basis. It is estimated that up to 5,000 people sign up for their services each day ! Industry insiders believe that within the next 3 years 3 million Americans will sign up. That is an astounding number.

What are the main reasons so many people switch to satellite tv services, you may ask yourself ? Well, for one, they offer way more HD programming than cable companies such as Time Warner and Comcast. Dish Network, for example, offers up to 32 channels in high-definition in some cities (Los Angeles). Recently, there was a story published about a certain 27-year old who resides in Los Feliz, CA, and this young man was unhappy with the fact that he couldn't enjoy his new SONY 42-inch LCD. You see, he is a cable subscriber (Time Warner) and his apartment management does not allow the installation of satellite dishes. He only gets 16 HD channels from Time Warner, and he feels like he isn'tmaking the most of his SONY TV. "It makes you feel trapped," he was quoted as saying. This man, whose name is Scott, knows that Dish Network offers more HD programming. That is one of the main reasons a lot of people are switching, besides the high price of cable.

In recent years (or maybe months) there has been a proliferation of LCD and plasma television sets, and their prices are dropping. These days you can go home with a 46-inch after parting with just under $1300 ! A bargain if you ask me. What is the use of owning a TV that costs more than you mortgage payment of you can only watch less than 20 channels in high-def ?

Dish Network, for example, is constantly adding HD local channels to its line-up (making a lot more people sign up) and plans to launch 3 satellites in 2008.

In terms of the number of channels DirecTV is the victor. If you are a sports fanatic then you should go with DirecTV. Dish Network is a little cheaper, and they have more international programming than DirecTV. They are the only provider to offer Thuan Viet, a channel geared towards the ever-growing Vietnamese community.

Nice hub page. You're right. When you site down to sign a 1 year or 2 year contract with a company, you want to make sure they are going to deliver the HD Channels and keep expanding your selection.

I've been with Dish Network for a while, and have been subscribed to their HD service for about 18 months now. They have outgrown cable and Direct TV in this regard. However, they recently just added a bunch of new HD channels, but they also dropped a bunch too... namely their VOOM network channels. That was a real bummer.

Anyway, I still think Dish is leading the pack, and will do so for at least the next year when you see the projected HD Channel growth.

This really looks good and satellite TV looks like the thing to have. However, in singapore, it is very regulated and we can only have what is being offered, cable ot free to air:(

I have been thinking about going with satelite. I have had cable for so long I'm not sure how I would get along. I would definately have to get the local channels to keep up with the local sports etc:

I myself must say I have been a Direct TV customer for well over 5 years now. I originally had Comcast for many of years. When I was a comcast customer the prices and channel selections were terrible. The bill kept getting higher and higher and I was not receiving many channels at all. I must say that I am very pleased with my choice to change to direct tv but I will say the dishnetwork is cheaper than direct tv but direct tv has the football package and so many channels for great prices and hd channels . This article hit it on the head for me. You cannot go wrong with Satelite TV especially when you have a big screen hd tv.
