Using A Light Meter
One good way to get better exposures in Photography is to use a light meter. It doesn’t matter how good your camera is, it can always be better and a light meter is going to help you get those better shots. This hub has a few pointers on how to use a light meter.
How To Use A Light Meter
On the meter itself you should set your film speed. This way the meter will know what exposure to read. You will find that most light meters can have the film speed stetting set by using a small knob or a digital button.
You need to be standing near the subject of your photo to take a general light reading. In the case of landscapes the reading needs to be in the direction of your subject. You then point your meter in the direction of your camera's lens.
The light you want to meter is the light falling on your black or white subject. By doing this your photographs will have strong whites and strong blacks. So with the light meter a few inches away from the subject, point the meter towards the subject. The most common uses for this meter technique are weddings, snow scenes, black cars and other subjects that greatly contrast from the surrounding scenery.
On the light meter read the results of the metering which will be a numeric value that corresponds to your camera's shutter speed. Now to get that perfect exposure you adjust the shutter speed dial at the top of your camera.
