Guide to Backlinks for SEO, How to Make them Where to Place them and Some High PR Freebies to get you started
94What are Backlinks
Okay, If you are a seasoned pro at Search Engine Optimization (SEO) then this article will be of little value to you. However, if you are just now taking your baby steps on generating revenue from online methods then this article will be crucial to your understanding of the value of quality backlinks.
If you're just starting out, you will see terms like: backlink, backlinks, quality backlinks, high PR backlinks. And you'll be thinking, "what the heck is a backlink?" Simply put, you can thnk of a backlink as a directional pointer to your web site or article, or whatever you are promoting.
Some backlinks carry more weight than others and then some carry no weight at all. It all depends on where you place the link and the type of link you are placing. Some links will generate targeted traffic. Targeted traffic comes from people that search for your keywords on the search engines and find your link embedded in an article, blog , or forum post.
Some links carry what the SEO guru's call Google Juice. Links with Google Juice are those that are placed in publicly viewable profiles on High PR (Page Rank) sites. For example, Hubpages has a Page Rank (PR) of 6 and allows us to create a profile and place backlinks inside the text. When the search engines do what they do, they send a spider that crawls the profile and notes the backlink and credits it to the targeted site as being worthy of a PR6 site, therefore giving it Google Juice.
Then there are those links that carry no weight at all with the search engines but that does not mean they are worthless. Links that carry no search engine weight are those that are tagged "nofollow." The "nofollow" tag simply tells the search engine spiders that, yes there is a link to another site here but the current site is not endorsing the targeted site. That's not to say that sites that have the "dofollow" tag endorse the targeted sites, they only endorse the member that is posting the backlink.
These "nofollow" backlinks can have value if you are an active member or contributing member of a site and build community relationships with other members. If your fellow members become friends or fans then they can likely send traffic to your profile which will have the link pointing to whatever you are promoting.
Do you get it now?
Where to get Backlinks
Getting backlinks is not that hard, it is time consuming which makes it a challenge for people with limited time. If you read my hub on the Easiest ways to get backlinks, you would know that it only takes time. You're results are reflected by your effort.. Another good source for finding backlinks was written by fellow Hubber, Sunstreeks. You can really see her efforts pay off.
400 Backlinks At Once
- Brad Callens Free Article Submitter
A really economical way to submit your article to over 400 article directories at once. Don't worry about duplicate content, these articles are not meant to earn you adsense revenue, it's meant to build you backlinks.
A freebie for you
Okay, I must be crazy but I'm going to give you a small list of places where you can place a backlink. This list is a list that I created. Similar lists are selling on sites like the Warrior Forum at $20 a pop. These are self discovered sites and I have backlinks on them myself.
When you go to each of these sites, you will have to resgister as a member and confirm your membership through an email responder. Once you are confirmed, you will be allowed to create a membership profile. Inside the profile, you can place an anchor text that points to whatever you are promoting. If you are unfamilliar with what an anchor text is, look above at the blue colored links. Those are anchor texts that I have pointing at mine and Sunstreeks hubs.
Here's the list:
- forum.upi.edu/v3 this is a PR5 site
- freemusicarchive.org this is a PR6 site
- imeem.com this is a PR7 site
- multply.com this is a PR7 site
- 2collab.com this is a PR8 site
- propeller.com this is a PR8 site
- digg.com this is a PR8 site
- slashdot.org this is a PR9 site
Here is a tip, when you get to these sites, they usually have a page entitled "links." Go to that page and follow the links and sometimes you will find a similar site that will allow you to become a member and make a profile.
If you're not already a member here at hubpages the JOIN HERE and get a link on a PR6 site from within your new profile.
How to make a link
I understand that many of you reading this are very green and need all the information you can get so here is all the information I have... ;)
Most sites have their own way of doing things but similar sites have similar qualities. Blogs and article directories and many of the sites I listed above require HTML for placing links.Forums mostly require BB code and Wiki's require something entirely different. But all of them generally allow anchored text when it comes to backlinks.
Here is how to make the links:
HTML Set Up:
<a href="http://www.YOURSITE.com">ANCHOR TEXT</a>
BBCode Set Up:
[url=http:/www.YOURSITE.com]ANCHOR TEXT[/url]
Textile Set Up:
"ANCHOR TEXT":http://www.YOURSITE.com
Wiki Markup Set Up:
[url:ANCHOR TEXT|http:/www.YOURSITE.com]
Wiki 2 Set Up:
[http://www.YOURSITE.com|ANCHOR TEXT]
Regular Wiki Set Up:
[http://www.YOURSITE.com ANCHOR TEXT]

Glad I could help dohn and good luck in the challenge.
Excellent list Richard - many thanks ! Now I just got to get my act together and check them all out.
Thanks. It takes a bit of time to get use to the process but once you know what to look for it gets easy.
Thanks for sharing your list of sites for backlinks. Think I'll read your other Hubs...I'm sure I'll pick up even more new link stuff.
Thanks for visiting and the comment. I have several hubs that were written to help fellow hubbers and other article marketers generate traffic and help in their SEO stategy.
Thanks so much--My husband and I are struggling with all the info, trying to understand what it takes to work online...this will help alot! :)
You are very welcome TamCor. Of course the best kind of links come from high PR sites that share a common theme with your site or article. Those types of links are sort of like endorsements of your content. As I said above, the links you get in your profiles on high PR sites are like endorsements of the member. For even more information, read the hubs I have linked to above.
Great hub! Thanks so much for sharing your backlink list. I appreciate all the help I can get.
Thank you Patti. Once you know what to look for, they're not that hard to find. Good luck.
Thank you! Do you have any advice about forum posting for promotion?
Thank you Celina. Yes, when you go to forums you need to put your links inside your signature. You want to comment and participate by leaving relevant feedback to the posters. You will get a lot of backlash if you join a forum for the sole purpose of self promotion. Self promotion is okay, but only from your sig.
Depends too on the forum. Some forums like digitalpoint will not even allow you to create a sig until you have made a minimum of 10 posts. Even then you still need another 15 posts before you can start your own thread.
Use the search function on the forums to find a topic that interests you. Then get involved in the conversation. But before you waste your time on a forum or anywhere you want to leave a backlink, make sure they are dofollow sites.
View the page source and then find where someone else left a link and see if there is a ref=nofollow tag, if there is, don't waste your time and move on to your next target...lol
Hope this helps.
I found your collection very useful, and the type of links you have provided will really help me in forums where I will be back linking
Thanks so much, LWR. Great info and very, very helpful.
@oderog, @Ironer Thank you for visiting and I'm glad my information can help you. Once you know where to look for backlinks it gets easier. You just have to put in the time.
Thank you for some very valuable information.
Nice article! I particularly appreciate the list of sites for backlinking.
I noticed that the links in your story open up in a new window. I'm new to HubPages, but the links I add to my articles won't do that. Any tip on how it's done?! Thanks!
@monnezay @kent merritt, thank you for your comments.
To open a link in a new is easy, when you highlight your anchor text to link, select the "advanced settings" and then you can choose to open in a new window or the same window.
Again, great article. This is when I need someone like you living next door to come over and sit down with me so I can "get it". I've bookmarked this article too! Well done!
Thank you Jane and you will get it, it just takes a little time to learn how to navigate and find what you need to really help you succeed. By the way, I'm not going anywhere soon so if you need help, just ask.
Good starter list of sites. There were a few there that I wasn't aware of.
Glad I could help, thanks for checking it out.
Great list Richard! Thanks for your time to help us all =D
LiveJournal offers the opportunity to use anchor text, and is used by some authoritative sites for its comment platform.
Great Stuff
The list of sites was really great
Nice job. Thank you for the freebies.
Very informational. Thanks for the High PR sites.
It's the first time I heard we can get backlink on imeem.com.
Anyway, I'll try.
Building profile links allows you to 'piggy back' on site authority - where authority is now king. Don't forget to build a few links to these profiles, instead of just your website all the time.
When you build backlinks, you also need to optimize them. You can find this out in my hubpage...just type 'optimizing backlinks' into google to find it ;)
Thanks for the information and really appreciate your list.
Finally I learn something new about back links - and useful as well! Thanks!
Thank you so much. I am greener than the grass between my toes! This info was so helpful. Hope your a Cubs Fan! Only way to go!
Thank all of you for the great comments and yes Timely, I am a Cubs Fan and only 33,000 away for my season tickets...lol
Thank you for providing this information. RKHenry sent me over here, and I'm glad he did so. Thanks a bunch.
You are very welcom and I'll have to than RK next time I see him on the forums..
I have great luck with forums. Finding .edu forums as well as those such as digitalpoint and sitepoint bring in good quality links that seem to help my site.
Thanks Camping Dan. I too am a member of digitalpoint and agree I get a lot of traffic from there. I might add that it's important to consider the type of traffic you get from forums depends on the type of forum you are in.
I didn't realize forums would be useful. Also, I've heard some experts play down Stumbleupon saying the traffic really isn't useful from it. What are your thoughts?
This is a very good Hub by the way. I did do a successful "SEO" proj for a client earlier in the year by writing articles.
Stumbleupon, as well as all the social networks will only give you a small bit of traffic for a short period of time. And it's not advisable to submit your own articles. The anchor text link that you place in your profile will, as UK SEO pointed out above, sort of piggy back on the sites authority.
Many SEO experts agree that placing anchor text backlinks on high PR sites will gain you the Google Juice you need to soar in the SERP's. I know this to be true because I use this method in promoting my own websites. Many of these High PR sites allow you to create a profile and give you access to your own blog. So, you can place links in your profile, and if you have relevant material to blog about, you can place even more links inside the blog.
Before you go signing up at these sites, its good to see if they are nofollow or dofollow because nofollow sites will limit you to only traffic where dofollow sites will give you Google Juice.
Thanks for the great info. As a newbie to all this, I appreciate a hub that cuts through to the meat of the issue. This should be a big help to me. Keep up the good work!
good information about seo.Learning now...
Thank you so much..I'm still struggling but then, your hub is so simple and easy to understand. Thanks!:)
Richard, Mac, Lyla thank you for your comments. It takes a little patience but once you learn the ropes it gets easier to find and place backlinks.
Thanks a lot for ALL that good information! This should for sure help me out, or for that matter anyone. Again thanks, and God bless!
Thanks for the comment Twill4jc. Glad I could help.
Thanks, appreciate all the info I can get although it can be overwhelming.
Take it slow and it will come together for you. Thanks for the comment bdr173.
This is great, I have been looking for a place that could give me a list of good PR 6 and higher sites, thanks soooo much!
Nice Hub. I heard that Google is starting to downgrade forum links because they are self posted and they only want to count links that other people put on for a site. Have you heard anything about that? I'd hate to be wasting a bunch of time getting worthless links. Thanks for a great hub. I gave it an up rating.
@Archetype thanks for the comment glad I could help.
@Alway thank you too for the comment and no I haven't heard about Google downgrading forum links. However, it's not the links you place in forum posts that we are after, sure those are good too especially for traffic but we are more concerned with getting our anchor text backlinks placed insied our profiles on those High PR sites. They may not all show up on backlink checkers but they are there and they do work, it works for my sites.
thanks for the high pr sites list.
Thanks for the great information. Your Hub articles have gotten me back on track. I was definitely starting to lose focus on article writing.
Very nice of you to say Barb. Thanks for visiting and I'm glad I could help.
Learned a lot from this great article..
Thanks hpwriter
This is excellent information well presented and very helpful. Thanks for sharing and I'm sure the best compliment to you would be that we implement it.
Excellent info. Bookmarked it. Thanks for sharing
Hi Richard, nice hub! Just to let you know I signed up to propeller and it wouldn't accept a link to a hubpage - said it was spam. Oh well, I did put a link on m profile page there so hopefully that will help my SERP.
Never knew the profile links were so beneficial. Thanks for the great info!
@jay @susan @disco thanks for the comments glad I could help. Susan, a lot of the social bookmark sites are not allowing us to bookmark our own articles. However,Propeller and Digg allow us to create a profile and place anchor text links inside. This will help in the SERP's by "piggy backing" off their site authority.
Definitely a great guide for those who are new to the SEO game. I remember when I was starting out, and these resources were so beneficial, and they certainly still are. You never stop learning, never!
You're right Kaabi, never stop learning. Here is another tip, copy those link setups and place them in a file on your computer so when you go to place backlinks all you have to do is copy and paste, no rewriting needed unless you are changing the destinaion of the link.
Thanks for giving useful information on article.
Great!!
I am glad I check out your hub when it showed up. I've heard backlink before but not sure where to put them. Great information and will try out those high PR site. Thank you so much for sharing!
Can you get good backlinks from the Ezine Article profile page as well as other article submission sites? Your Hubs have been very helpful. Thanks
Hi Barb, thanks for the comment. Yes you can get a good backlink through your profile at ezinearticles.com however it will be a url link and not an anchor text link. The url link will give your site some google juice but not your keywords so it's a give and take. Your best bet is to discuss your url inside your profile to get any visitors to click on it.
good information for free backlinks for the site.
Kindly do some precautions to save the hubpages from spamming.
Do not approve non-HP members which are promoting their sites.
List of sites is good.
Most people don't know how to write a useful comment so they just get deleted. And it's dumb to post links in places that you are not welcome. If you look at the people selling link lists that's how they are making their money. But because the lists get saturated with unintelligent comments the site owners just shut them off. Your article is good, but people would get a lot more out of placing links on sites where they are welcome.
Mike, I agree to a point. The links I'm suggesting you make are anchor links that are placed inside your profile at these sites. The profiles are publicly viewable and they do not interfere with any dialogue that may be taking place on those sites. These sites welcome new users because it builds up their stats. Ideally, they would like these new users to participate in the dialogue and if you do participate, make sure you follow the sites TOS.
This is a great guide! Something I need to know about backlinking. Thanks!
Thanks for useful info...
Great!!
Excellent introduction Richard and a good list of resources too.
One other way to get targeted backlinks for free which will send some useful traffic along is through twitter - not by adding your link to your profile page which is what most people already know - but by targeted a blog post or site content and linking back to it through a tweet using the same keywords in the tweet - if you use a longtail keyword which nobody else is using this will really help to propel your site in google search - I've used it for a hub I have which went from around 15 to 75 daily visits with this method in less than a week.
hope it helps..
This is an excellent slice of info. Thanks so much for sharing.
I build my back-links using these guys: http://www.freetrafficsystem.com/a.php?p=15975
They have great system and explain in a simple way what and how. It really worked for me and at the time I had no idea what this was about. So, thanks again for the great explanation. Good luck in all you do..

This is fantastic advice here! I heard of Multiply, its quite similar to Bebo, a lot of people in Asia seem to use it a helluva lot! Yes, once again I am taking notes here! You are a true mine of information! Many thanks! Great suggestions on backlinks!
Thanks for the great comments Cheeky, I'm glad my information can help.
Great Hub indeed to learn how to make backlinks for our sites! Thanks a lot livewithrichard!
You're quite welcome ratnaveera. Everyone that runs a website or markets online needs to know how and where to place backlinks.
Great list. Given that Hubpages is only PR6 despite so many articles.
Thank you so much! I have just started learning about all this stuff and your hub was very easy to understand!
Thanks Gabrielle, we all had to start somewhere and I wish this information was around when I started too.
Thanks for great info and free list. I learn a lot here. I should have check into the forum earlier.
What a fantastic and informative Hub. I really appreciate all the information!
Thanks for visiting Rachel, hope you can put it to good use.
Richard - I love reading your Hubs you offer such great information. From making money to the new butt firming tennis shoes!! Thank you very much for all your input at Hub pages. Take care and talk with you soon
Thnks Cheri, I like to be well rounded...lol
Great Hub! Very informative. But I have to disagree with you on one point. Nofollow links do carry some leverage if they are coming from VERY HIGH PR Sites such as the Wiki. That just from my experience. Has anyone had the same effect?
But overall, love your hub! :)
S.E. nofollow links have no weight with the search engines, the nofollow designation tells the search engines to skip over it and go on to the nest piece in the source code.
Nofollow links are still clickable so, yes on high traffic sites they do carry value in that visitors will click on them and follow through to your site. But as far as having PR value for search engines, they have none.
Wow! So much information! What a fantastic hub for those like me who are just starting out. It's really good of you to share your tips with us.
Good beginners article. Another way to get backlinks is to take a top site in your niche and get the "site info" from Alexa.com/ Look at the sites linking in. Follow the link and see if it is a site you could participate on. Keep a spreadsheet of the best sites and visit then monthly.
Thanks. Would be using the above strategies for sure to get strong internal linking for the mentioned below website -
Hello,
Another way to find valuable back links are to use Alexa.com, where I checked my competitor's back links and found Hubpages to be one of their traffic sources.
I'm preparing for the time when I will lessen the number of hubs I produce and start increasing the backlinks. I know I can do both but heck, I want to do it one at a time or I'll go crazy from doing everything. This hub of yours is certainly up there in the hubs I will read and re-read over and over again until I can get the concept of backlink. Thanks Richard.
