Guide to Coffee- Brands, Flavors, Etc
69
The flavor of coffee is dependent on many factors, including the color (light, medium, dark) or the custom roast recipe. Many coffees brands have their own specific roast, as well as many different blends which create custom and specialty flavors, the most popular of which is most likely french vanilla.
Types of Beans
Colombian - Probably the most popular, Colombian beans provide a full body and rich flavor, great for those who prefer their coffee black.
Arabica - Less caffeinated than other beans, but perfect for gourmet and specialty coffees
Sumatra - A more gentle bean with no acidity, the full bodied bean is great for those who take a little cream with their brew.
Coffee Brands
Folgers - By far the largest coffee marketer, Folgers not only offers a long line of roasts, but they also offer a line of gourmet selections. These gourmets include Vanilla Biscotti, Chocolate Truffle and Carmel Drizzle.
Maxwell House - Maxwell has been a household name for decades, dating back from the late 1800's. Currently, they offer a long line of roasts and two flavored roasts. Their roasts range from mild and dark, to 'kick-start' your day, or 'The richest coffee on Earth' depending on your preference. They offer both Colombian and Arabica blends. They also produce a Vanilla and a Hazelnut flavored blend.
Starbucks - The Brewer heard around the world, this coffeehouse now offers their own line of in-store roasts, ranging from mild to extra-dark. Although more expensive than other in-store roasts, Starbucks whole bean and ground 1lb bags are still less expensive than letting the coffee house make it for you!
Chock Full o' Nuts - A New York based coffee roaster, they offer just about every coffee for the white and blue collar workers. They also produce their New York Classics line, serving up for more sophisticated tastes! The roast most original blends, as well as both vanilla and hazelnuts flavors. They make a 100% Arabica "New York Roast", with a full bodied dark roast, without an excess of bitterness, as well as a 100% Colombian Roast, "The richest coffee in the world!".
Millstone - If you're looking for the ultimate variety of flavors, pick yourself up a bag of Millstone Coffee. Their best flavors range from Irish Creme to Holiday Peppermint (seasonal), or Cinnamon Hazelnut to Raspberries 'n' Cream. Aside from flavored coffees they also have many roasts, including my personal favorite Foglifter; a blend of light and dark roasts with a spicy kick and full body!
Local Store Brands - Many large grocers now carry their own line of coffee roasts and flavors. Stores like Wegmans, based in the East, have a strong market for these roasts, adding many choices with lower prices.
Whole Bean vs. Grounded
While grounded beans are by far the most popular, whole bean coffees will offer the freshest taste. Coffee connoisseurs know that the best tasting coffee is ground right before it is brewed. Grounded coffee may taste less bold and stale when compared to freshly grounded coffee. If you don't have a coffee grinder at home, many grocery chains have grinders in their store that will allow you to grind a whole bag on the spot. While this isn't quite as fresh as grinding as much as you need at a time, it will give you an idea of the true freshness of coffee!
"Fresh" Coffee
There are many people who believe that the coffee we buy in the store from major companies are far from fresh, no matter how close to brewing that we grind them. One popular website has opened the doors to absolute fresh coffee by purchasing their beans from small plantations that pride on fair labor and environmental practices. They claim to be get the freshest beans possible! These roasters, Coffee Fool, have a countless number of roasts, 100% pures and endless different flavors! If you want FRESH, try a bag from these guys ($8.20 for 12oz - $35.70 for 8oz).
