Disaster Recovery Planning is Essential to Businesses of All Sizes

With the increasing importance of an organization’s information technology for the continuation of business critical functions, the importance of protecting their data and IT infrastructure in the event of a disaster has become a more visible business priority in recent years.

Every organization can experience a disaster incident that can prevent continuing normal operations. It can happen to anyone, on any day, at any time. The potential causes can be anything from natural disaster to computer malfunction to accident, the list is endless. Due to these possibilities, disaster recovery is necessary for any company, no matter the size or age.

Disaster recovery is the process, policies and procedures that are related to the preparation for recovery or continuation of technology infrastructure after a disaster. This includes planning for resumption of data, applications, communications (such as networking), hardware and other IT infrastructure.

Most large companies spend approximately 2-4% of their IT budget on disaster recovery planning, with the aim of avoiding larger losses that could occur due to loss of IT infrastructure and data. Of organizations that did have a major loss of business data, over half closed within two year and only 6% survived in the long-term.

When we create a disaster recovery plan, we start with a business impact analysis. This is an assessment of financial losses to the organization resulting from an unavailability of important business services. We will also make sure that each department understands its role in the disaster recovery plan. To recover and to protect the critical systems, each department has to understand the plan and follow it.

Organizations should also take preventative, detective and corrective measures to reduce or even eliminate computer threats. Preventative measures will try to prevent a disaster from occurring, if able. Detective measures will be taken to discover the presence of any unwanted events within the IT infrastructure.Corrective measures are aimed to restore the system after a disaster or otherwise unwanted event takes place.

One of the most common strategies for data protection in the event of disaster includes data backup. Remote data backup allows your organization’s data to be copied, not only on-site, but also to an off-site location, which ensures that your data will be available to your organization no matter what happens. In addition to preparing for the need to recover data,

BNC Dallas customers also implement precautionary measures to prevent a disaster before it happens. These measures can include anti-virus software and security measures, surge protectors to minimize power surge effects on electronic equipment, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and backup generator to keep systems going in the event of power failure, and even simple fire preventions such as alarms and extinguishers.
