Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the most popular cities for tourists all across Europe and for many other places world wide. There is so much to offer there in terms of things to do and accommodation available, so for tourists looking for Barcelona, Spain accommodation, it can become a stressful process. Due to the fact that Barcelona being so popular, so many people having previously been, will give their opinions on the right Barcelona Spain accommodation and what you should do when you arrive. However everyone has their own tastes and motives so it is important that anyone coming to Barcelona fully understands what is available to their budget and match what they are looking for as the city of Barcelona really does have something for everyone. It could be just relaxing at the beach sunbathing or admiring the wonderful array of architecture throughout the city. Not only that, apart from finding great Barcelona Spain accommodation, tourists can enjoy many great shops, go to many sporting events such as FC Barcelona, Barcelona tennis open or Formula 1 and other things such as art, music and theatre.

First Time Visitors

However before all of that we must examine the city’s layout. Barcelona is divided up into 13 districts which, in the past, were separate towns. Each area has its own qualities so it is important to understand that their location and features vary drastically depending where you are staying.

For first time visitors, they generally prefer to stay in Barcelona Spain accommodation in districts near the centre like Barrio Gotico and Raval as they are near the famous Las Ramblas. These two areas occupy each side of Las Ramblas and are heavily populated with hotels and apartments and it’s quite easy to find cheap accommodation at competitive prices. Full of bars, restaurants and clubs however are overpriced and crawling with drunken louts who can be loud and obnoxious, and this is very common especially in summer season. Some parts are quite dirty and dangerous with many pickpockets on the prowl for unsuspecting tourists, also at night the streets are littered with prostitutes (many transsexuals) who can be very forceful towards men. Although it’s not all bad as these areas are targeted towards younger tourists who want to party all night, but if you are a family with young children then other, quieter, districts would be better advised.

Barcelona Beach

Other Areas

The area of Eixample, for example, offers a great range of affordable Barcelona Spain accommodation in one of the most beautiful areas of the city. Many of the worlds famous Gaudi designed buildings reside here such as La Casa Milà and Sagrada Familia. Around the famous Passeig de Gracia Street, there are many apartments and hotels available at reasonable prices. Eixample is much quieter than the more touristy areas however is still very central and has many places to eat and drink and sights to see.

In relation to the summer season in Barcelona, one of the most popular areas to find Barcelona Spain accommodation is Barceloneta situated along the beach. Barcelona apartments range from budget to luxury and are only a few minutes to the beach. It’s a great area for young people and families or anyone who likes being by the sea. There are various bars restaurants and “Chiringuitos” (beach bars) where you can relax and enjoy the sun and Mediterranean Sea.

I love Barcelona! What zone would you recommend to a 40 something youthful couple who enjoy cultural attractions more than a bar scene?

Hey Guru-C I'd certainly recommend a hotel in the Eixample district of Barcelona otherwise somewhere nice in the gothic quarter or born areas - lots of culture here!

Barcelona has some wonderful hotels - here's my favourite:

Claris Hotel Barcelona Metro - Passeig de Gracia or Diagonal (Green Line, L3)(10 mins walk)

I personally like to advise people to stay in a hotel on Passeig de Gracia as it is a fairly smart area with good accommodation and you don't have the hassle you can get on the Ramblas at night - the bottom end is a notorious red light district and so full of working girls and drug dealers.

Otherwise stick to the hotels around Placa Catalunya and the top end of the Ramblas.
