Yoga is a magical fitness program that helps balance emotions, sharpen the intellect, and bring peace of the mind. The attention to the physical body with the emphasis on the yoga postures is why this particular form of exercise is so popular in our culture. You do not have to be spiritual to practice yoga. Start with the physical postures, also know as yoga asanas, and see where they take you. If you make the choice to practice yoga regularly, you will see a significant difference in your spine, body and mind. Below I have outlined some guidelines for practicing yoga. These instructions will provide you with the tools to begin practicing this strength and flexibility program.

Yoga Guidelines

  • Ideally the yoga session should take place somewhere quiet and peaceful. To avoid unexpected interruptions, turn off the phone and remove your watch.
  • Work on a non slip yoga mat that is long enough for your entire body to rest on comfortably.
  • Practice barefoot and in light comfortable clothing
  • Do not practice yoga on a full stomach. You will need to wait for up to four hours after a large meal, and two hours after a snack.
  • Remove contact lenses and tie up any long hair
  • If it is cold, work in a heated room. As you become adept you will be able to generate your own body heat.
  • Start at the appropriate level and go at your own pace. Yoga is not about competition.
  • A yoga session always require a warm up period. Your muscles need to become more fluid before attempting the complex yoga stretches.
  • Do not force yourself into the yoga postures. Push yourself just to the edge of the discomfort, breathe into the muscles involved, and hold the position for 5 breaths. With practice you will ease yourself deeper and deeper into the yoga posture until one fine day the break through will occur.

Yoga Health Benefits

One of the key differences between Yoga and many other forms of exercise is that it uses the power of the mind to help with the physical exercises. The mind body approach has opened up a new realm of possibilities in the world of physical fitness, enabling the body and mind to work together to create a framework for exercise that is harmonious, balanced and focused.

The best physical fitness programs are those that improve flexibility, build strength, and increase stamina. Yoga helps you build both strength and flexibility and improve your muscle coordination. It also offers a complete work out for the entire body that exercises not just the main muscle groups, but weaker less used muscles. Yoga enables you to achieve a perfectly toned body and realize your true fitness potential. Keep in mind, it is also an exercise system this is open to Every Body and any age.
