Traditional Irish Recipes using Guinness

On a cold winter's night, with the snow flurrying outside, and ice forming on the windows, there's nothing better than to sit back eating a hearty meal; perhaps a great Irish Stew, or a simple pot roast. These recipes have been around for centuries, and for good reason.

Being an experimenter by nature, I like to spice up my recipes - sometimes I'll add non-traditional ingredients and others I'll just change the recipe slightly by adding different herbs - one thing I have found that always improves something like a stew is adding ale or stout. My stout of choice is of course Guinness. It adds a slight bitterness to the meal, but also adds a pleasing richness.

I've created many separate hubs for individual recipes but felt it was time to collect them all toghether in one hub - I will continue to add individual hubs, and therefore update this main hub as I go along!

Enjoy!

Starters

Some of these recipes can be used to accompany the main course, but in many instances I would use them as a starter.

Main Courses

I love hearty food, especially on a cold winters night. Guinness is the perfect addition to many recipes to add a boldness and unique flavor to enhance any hearty food.

Desserts & Drinks

I'm always looking for something new, and find exotic desserts particularly good - what better than to experiment with Guinness and desserts.

Notes for Vegetarians

Guinness contains isinglass (basically fish gelatin) and therefore Guinness is not suitable for vegetarians, you’d have to replace the Guinness with one of the stouts below:

  • Alloa Stout - bottle
  • Bell's Stout (Various)
  • Black Isle Brewery Porter Stout
  • Bridge of Allan's Glencoe Wild Oat Stout (bottled)
  • Hopback Entire Stout
  • Isle of Skye Oyster Stout (bottled)
  • Linfit English Guineas Stout - bottle
  • Cropton's Scorseby Stout (bottle)
  • Dublin's Darcy's Dublin Stout
  • Samuel Adams Stout (Various)
  • Titanic Brewery Stout - bottle

SimeyC - Isinglass. So that is the answer to my question about why vegetarians shun Guinness. Thanks. Gus

Gus - yes. I did respond with a comment in the hub where you asked the question - I should have sent you a message too! Sorry!

I do note that most of the recipes I give are really only good if there's meat in them anyways!!!!

My husband is going to love these! He's always experimenting with beer in the kitchen. I can't because I don't drink beer so I wouldn't know what kind to put in what recipes, and he only has so many ideas.

I'm going to show him this now. He'll be so excited. Thanks for the interesting Hub!

I can't wait to try some of these recipes! The only thing I've ever made with Guinness has been Corned Beef and Cabbage and it was simply fantastic! I've cooked pot roast and a few other things with a fine ale or stout, but not Guinness and now after reading this, I'm not sure why...I am sure I'll be referring back to this hub all season long! Cheers!

Lindsey: I hopr your husband (and you) enjoy the recipes as much as I do!

Mitchell Hillman: Corned Beef and Cabbage with Guinness - now that does sound good - I feel another hub coming on - gives me an excuse to experiment! Hope you enjoy the recipes as much as I do!

Good hub, and good advice, will have to try some of these recipes this winter. They will come in handy this winter, seeing how Oklahoma is prone to snow and ice storms.

Interesting Hub SimeyC, I enjoyed Guinness steak pie in Ireland. I presume you can make the same dishes with Murphy's. That isn't as bitter.
