While leaves can be a problem year round in the gutters of your home, during the fall season they can become a particular problem. All that beautiful fall foliage ends up on the lawn or gutter, clogging things up and making quite a mess. There are a number of choices in gutter leaning tools that the homeowner can take advantage of, and each has its pros and cons. Here is a look at your gutter cleaning tool choices.

Of course you can get a ladder and climb up to simply scoop out the gutters on your home. But most of us are much more comfortable with both feet planted firmly on terra firma, or in some cases we simply can't reach a second story gutter. So most of these tools have some type of extension that increases your reach greatly.

One thing to be sure to do is after the gutter is cleaned is to make sure that the downspouts are not blocked, and it's usually prudent to put one of the screens or traps in the downspout to keep leaves and debris from going down and clogging it pretty badly.

iRobot makes a gutter cleaning robot. It will clean up to 80 feet of gutter, but this seems that it's under ideal conditions. It's small enough it can go under gutter straps, but won't fall down downspout holes. It's battery operated and it runs with a remote control. Check out the reviews on Amazon before you buy to make sure it will work in your application.

Traditional Gutter Cleaning Tools

The Gutter Grabber acts as a scoop, something like a broom and dustpan. You push the debris towards the grabber, and take it out by lifting it out.

One type of tool will attach to a power vacuum. These usually have a longer extension with a J shaped end which hooks into the gutter itself, and the tubes are a larger diameter than most and will try to vacuum the material up. Sometimes very wet materials can clog these up

In contrast to the vacuum powered attachments, there are cleaner attachments for your power washer. These will help blast the material out of the gutter, the downside of that approach is that it can make quite a mess if there is a lot of debris.

For any of these gutter cleaning tools it's a good idea to check the reviews to make sure they work for you. You want to be sure they reach as high as you need, and will work with any extra equipment you have on hand like a vacuum or a power washer.
