Health and Safety in a Gym

Going to a gym has been part of ones lifestyle for many of us. Gone are the days when people did not bother about health and how they looked, today there is a sudden change in thinking and every human at one point or the other takes care of his health. In India people still prefer the traditional form of breathing exercise, yoga. However the rise of gyms in my neighborhood does not seem to deter by it.

The gym that I go to is just the right mix of yoga, exercises both strength and cardio the best of both worlds if I may say. After a long gap of no workout and plainly put having a hectic lifestyle and not putting yourself first will put some serious health issues for you. While working out for a better and energetic lifestyle we need to be very cautious of the risks and accidents that might happen if we were careless. Here is a list of some top health factors that need to be taken care of prior and while exercising.

Let the instructors know of medical conditions:

Many gyms in the city, I live in a metro and they make it mandatory to state any medical conditions the applicant to the gym has way in advance. For first times it may seem not such a crucial or important step but trust me if they knew the medical conditions they would not give you those exercises that may increase pain and cause stress level.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and have severe pain in my joints in the lower part of my foot and this act as a hindrance for me to perform the foot movements, but since the instructor knows in advance he guides me in a way the pain is bearable.

My advice is, Do consult a doctor and they will give you a list of preconditions prior to exercise.

Always warm up prior to exercise:

When I initially joined we just do things or exercises just for the heck of it somehow over the course of time we learn its significance. Warm up is more like a teaser before the main show is about to begin. A simple warm up exercise with neck bending, breathing, stretching and squatting will not only set you in a mood to get into exercising but also help in blood circulation to the muscles. After all the strength training ir is advisable to take it slow and cool down.

Warm up vs stretch exercises.

Importance of water while exercising

Water seems to be the best energy drink when it comes to exercising, all the other energy supplements have sugar in one form or other and hence it is less beneficial for weight loss. Have plenty of water before and after exercising so that your energy levels do not slow down. It is not only healthy but advised by many nutritionists that 8-10 glasses of water helps in better digestion and pushing toxins away means healthy lifestyle and better weight management. One drink many benefits, drink plain water.

Dont forget to drink more water

Never hurry, take it easy

Remember Rome was not built in a day and all that weight and fat you gained all these years is not going to go in a day. If you have this notion fixed little setbacks as not losing any pounds in the first month won’t mean the end of the world. Take it slow, I have seen through experience that many who rush and starve and loose weight put on immediately at a fast pace. General rule of thumb for strength training, start with lighter weights from five and increase the sets from 2 to three in the later weeks.

Maintain hygienic conditions: There were a total of four gyms in the area where I stay which are at walk able distance and we chose the one that was costly but hygienic. Never compromise on health at the rate of price. Trust me it is never worth the bargain. Always carry a handy towel whenever going to a gym. In the sit ups or reverse hip exercises wipe the areas of contact or use your towel. In Europe I remember there was a disinfectant which all of us used after we were done with the machines, but in India we are clean but not crazy clean so which gives us more the reason to be clean. The changing rooms need a special mention keep your clothes intact in a locker and check to it that they have proper ventilation.

You can never be sure:

Never talk while exercising this is a golden rule from a person who just hit her head with the dumbbell just a week ago, lol its funny now but the pain was too much when it went bang. Every one around were like so worried, Make sure pins and collars are used properly on weight machines and barbells. Don’t rush up with the exercise regime as your partner is leaving as you may end up hurrying and hurting yourself or even more badly not concentrating on your weight loss

Have a great support system

Have a good group of friends that are following the same regime or have the same set of goals when it comes to weight loss. It makes a world of difference they could tell you how to do things right and motivate you even further to the next level. Managing weight issues has always been a hassle to many of us, but when going to a gym be aware of the surroundings and these simple guidelines you are set for a better start.

Everything in this world comes with a price, for the price of looking gorgeous or having a body to die for one need not have to compromise with health. Health is wealth so why not cherish it for a longer time minus the accidents that could happen.

great information on gym safety tips, I remembered on my first day at the gym, the instructor, gave me a program that I think was too hard for a beginner, so I end up with aches all over my body and I was not able to exercise for several days.

Now I prefer to do yoga, its more relaxing and no body aches afterwards. lols
