Hey, maybe I should go join a gym?

It's that time of year again. When some of us are beginning to feel and look like the turkey that was on the table during the holidays, or in other words “stuffed”. As we sit around on our couches getting larger, we often see the latest commercial for the new gym in town, and we think, "Hey, maybe I should go join a gym?" Now I'm not sure how many of you have gone and joined a gym recently. But I have to rank it up there with a few the things I hate most.

(1) Buying a car,

(2) Sitting though a time-share presentation.

(3) Going to the dentist.

New to the list….(4)“Joining the gym.”

Yes joining a gym has now become a combination of buying a car, sitting through a time-share presentation, and going to the dentist all wrapped into one. The contracts for some gyms out there are seriously like buying a car. They want a down payment, a checking account so they can automatically withdraw your money even when you stop going and the dreaded lock in. They want you in a contract for a few years so you can keep paying them long into the future. Now don't get me wrong gym memberships are usually purchased with the best of intentions. We all want to believe that we will have time to go to the gym. We all want to be in great shape, but here are some simple and obvious facts. Gym memberships always pick up in January and February. Many people who join the gym in January February will go for a few weeks and then not return to the gym for the rest of the year. If you've ever been committed to going to the gym all the time you have surely seen this trend. The first few weeks every January and February the newbie’s roll in. The gyms are crowded, and then starting around March, they start to thin out and get back to the more normal size crowds. Then once the good weather gets here, they're almost empty except for the truly committed gym people.

So after seeing this trend time after time and year after year I started to wonder if there is a better way. Maybe we can get in shape without going to the gym, could it be possible? Let's face it. The decision to join the gym at a minimum is probably going to cost you at least $360 a year, and trust me that could be on the low end. Some gym memberships run into the thousands of dollars. But really take a look at what you get for that $360 a year. If you're lucky when you join your gym you may get a free training session. The trainer will show you around the gym point out the different equipment. Some of the better gyms may even give you a few sessions with a trainer, but in general after your initial tour of the building most of them leave you to be on your own. The trainer doesn't want to show you everything he knows or you won't need them. If you haven't had a personal trainer before, let me tell you a secret. they don't come cheap! Now don't get me wrong I don't have anything against personal trainers. There are many great ones. The facts are that most people just can't afford to have one, but thanks to a new trend in fitness we can all have a personal trainer, and not just some local guy who's got a good reputation, but a world-famous, top-notch trainer to the stars. Thanks to Beachbody, they have produced several in-home fitness programs that you can put in your DVD player and have your own famous personal trainer coming into your home every day.

This new trend in in-home workouts is a really taking the country by storm. Two of the top programs right now areP90X by Tony Horton, and Chalean Extreme by Chalene Johnson. So before you go through the buyer’s regret of joining the gym and get locked into some long-term contract. Why not give one of these in-home fitness programs try. Each one of these programs cost about $119 dollars. Trust me when I say its money well spent. I have been doing P90X. for the last year and a half. It's such a good program, and so well-designed that it doesn't get boring saves me over an hour day, and has gotten me into the best shape in my life. If you've been inactive for quite some time, you may want to consider starting with one of Beachbody's other programs. If P90X. interests you, but you don't think you're ready for it. You should start with Tony Horton's first program P90. If Chalean Extreme interests you, but you don't think you're ready for that then you should start with her first program, Turbo Jam.

Gym memberships are usually purchased with the best of intentions. Gym memberships are getting more and more expensive and many people just aren’t willing or can’t afford to fork out the cost of membership fees. Don’t worry I won’t go as far as to say that ,“Gym memberships are evil”. But gym memberships are sometimes the first to go when money gets tight, kids come along, or economy’s go south. So if you are looking to get in shape but don’t want to spend a lot a great in home fitness program may be the answer you have been looking for. One of the best places to get them online is www.shop.fitnesshop.tv

I hate to admit it but you're right. When I got my membership, I promised myself I would not waste it this time. After a year of going three to five times a week, this past year I rarely even think about it unless my kids ask me to go. Great topic to get the thought process on the right track. Now I just have to get motivated and get my body process on the right track.

...many of us have gone down that road...I find its just a matter of finding what works for you. For many people going to the gym just doesn't work. I have built my wife and I our own little home gym in the basement for far less than I ever spent at Golds Gym and have much better results at home....That seems to work for us...I always found for me if the gym wasnt really close to my house...I didnt go...Now that it's in my house I have no excuses....The good thing is using a program like P90X you don't need any exspensive equipment. just a few dumb bells

Gym memeberships are evil! My husband and I got one through Bally's years ago when I was pregnant and they told us that if my pregnancy was to be complicated in anyway they would cancel my memebership without any question. Well I had complications and they wouldn't teminate my membership like they said they would, even with a doctors notice. We fought them for three years until finally they canceled my membership with a $0 balance. It was a fight but we finally won. Gym memberships are truly evil! Especially the big companies.

Great example Christine...I don't every see me going to a gym again. I really love working out at home. The only gym that never gave me a hard time was the "Y" But they still want the auto draft from the checking account....and I had to send a letter to stop it....I could not just tell them....but the did close it without to much trouble....I also hate the Joining fee's...what the heck is that?...I rank that up there with under coating that car dealers try and sell you

A DVD won't correct your technique and make sure you are exercising effectively a DVD won't tailor a programme to your specific goals and requirements then update this programme continually to match your ongoing results. A DVD won't motivate or encourage you or boost your confidence when your having a bad day.

There is no magic bullet, changing your life to improve your health, your fitness and improve your shape will require an amount of dedication, commitment, motivation and effort. It is that simple. However in the busy world we live in we all need some help sometimes. A good Personal Trainer can provide this, not just over an hour once a week but on going support outside of your actual sessions. a good Personal Trainer will care about you and your results. You may need to try several Personal Trainers before you find the one for you so interview several (this process should be free with a reputable trainer). When you do find the right Trainer for you it's worth the investment. Now think about how much money you have spent over the years on diet products that have probably been more detremental to your health than helpful, money on slimming clubs, money on spurious home fitness equipment and even gym memberships you don't use because you don't really know what to do to achieve your results.

Add all that up and you could of spent a fraction of that on a good PT who would of got you results, educated you along the way and you'd be in way better shape than you are now!

I am a Personal Trainer and what's more I speak from experience of spending several years as a yo yo dieter and part time exerciser. I've also learnt that everyone is different and needs to be treated on a individual level, the broad brush approach of books and DVD's is just as ineffective as floundering around in the gym on your own getting frustrated with your lack of progress and it's cost you more money to boot!

I do it because I care, I've been there and I genuinely want to help people, but I also need to make a living and if you weigh up cost versus real value a good PT is a good investment and actually not that expensive. I know I get results with my clients, lasting results.

I have nothing against Personal Trainers. In fact many Beachbody Coaches like myself are trainers. We have trainers joing us all the time. It's actually a very good match and we provide a way for trainers to make money behond what they can fit into there day....Our in home programs are a great alternative for many people but a program like P90X is a great way for a trainer to help a client get a really good workout in on the days they are not with you. If you would like to see our buisness plan for trainers I would be happy to share it with you....Please don't take my hub as a knock on trainers....There is nothing like a great trainer but for 100 bucks I can give them a program that will give them great results. It's safe and was produced by a World Class Trainer. A $100 might get you 2 to 3 sessions with a trainer in a gym....My program they can do for years and get great results.
