Gypsystones and Other Found Art Ideas

Spreading the Joy of Art
With all the art cuts in schools, it's a wonder children get exposed to art at all. I wanted an inexpensive way to spread art throughout the land that would cost little to produce, yet have a charm all it's own. I had painted rocks since early in my life and they are virtually free depending on where you get them. I bought a bag of suitable rocks at the home improvement store down the street. At least 1/3 of the bag was useable and the rest I saved for the garden.
These are all painted with acrylic paint. Then when I take trips, I leave them laying here and there for folks to find. There is a website on the back in case people want to tell me where and how they found one. I haven't gotten any finds yet, but hope springs eternal.

- Quartzsite
I left my lovely gypsystones all over Quartzsite AZ. I may have one or two left that slipped to the bottom of my totebag. Time to make some more I suppose. I brought home more rocks than I left though.

I covered all the stones with a clear spray front and back to help them stand the outside weather until someone finds them. I wonder if this thing could catch on with other people making and leaving gypsystones everywhere. In a way it's like a cool business card with my blog address on the back of each one. No telling where it could lead to. It seems like a good homeschooling project too.
- More Gypsystones
I got up this morning and as soon as my daughter left to go to a meeting and my boyfriend left to go to the dentist, I got out my painting supplies and painted some more gypsystones. I think I will start putting them in one of those little baggies before I set them out for people to find to protect them from the elements better. As soon as they are good and dry I'll sign them and spray them with a protective finish. I'm always surprised at what comes out of my paint brush. Funny the things that lurk in our subconcious mind waiting for a chance to come forward and shout, "Hey look at me."

I'm going to make calling cards that say "Rare and Precious Creature." :)
Oi! I think you should!
What a wonderful idea!! And I love the imagery of calling them 'gypsystones'.
Just looking as to how long ago this was, do you still leave them around like that? Did anyone ever admit to finding one? Maybe they thought it meant 'if lost, return to' kind of thing like on the back of keychains, and they didn't want to give them back. I wouldn't. LOL
I haven't done any lately but the other day I found a box of them with just the background painted and ready to go. So I definitely want to do some more. So far no one's gotten back to me. But a lot of people have no idea how to use a computer. Still, I like the thought of getting art out into the world.

What a creative and and O so delightful idea! You are indeed a rare and precious creature bent on making the world a more joyful and bountiful place. I hope someday to find one of your stones; it is sure to bring me good fortune in spades!
