Halawa means sweet in Arabic. Since very long time, the Egyptians had been made a sweet confection using Sesame and Honey or Sugar. They use it for eating and for hair removal, and we will discuss both.

Edible Halawa

Ingredients:

1- Roasted Sesame 1/2 kilograms

2- Sea Salt 3/4 teaspoon

3- Honey (Molasses) 1/2 kilograms

4- Flavor as wanted

Method:

1- Mix sesame seeds and the salt crystals and grind them repeatedly (up to 3 times)

2- Add the honey or molasses and the flavor to the ground mixture and paste using a spatula

3- Pour into a container dish and put in the rfregirator

4- Flavoring can be made using Cardamon, Anise, Cocoa powder, Carob powder...etc.

You can add unsalted peeled nuts, whipped egg white, few drops of liquid Vanilla... elaborate. The color will range from beige to dark yellow according to the ingredients used. You can adjust the quantities to suit the type of raw materials you are using.

Halawa comprises the benefits of essential fatty acids and vitamin E in Sesame and the health benefits of honey. It can be eaten as snacks, added after gritted to the top of Ice cream, cut into cubes and immersed in Cocoa, or used by so many ways as a sweet healthy food.

Halawa sweet ( Egyptian Sugar Wax )

This is a very old Egyptian recipe for hair removal, it is completely natural and extremely effective. It is a caramel right before reaching the crysallization stage (so the taste and the name). It is easy to make, as long as you observe the carmelization of the sugar, beacause it can be easily burned. It happens that experienced makers of this recipe burn it, so if you burn a batch just make another one, and put it under your scrutiny once the color changes to golden brown.

Ingredients :

1- Water 2 cups

2- Sugar (honey or molasses) 3 cups

 3- Lemon Juice 2 teaspoons

Method :

1- Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to boil

2- Watch the color when it changes to golden brown, lower the flame and continue to simmer

3- Once the color changes to brown, turn the heat off

4- Allow to cool a little to keep it pourable, then pour small quantities onto heavy duty plastic that will not melt. You may use a small plate as you will need to peel it off something pliable when it cools

5- Test it after it cools, pull a piece off the plastic and stretch it through pulling :

* It should be easy to to stretch and pull

* If it is too hard, reject it and make a new patch, you heated too long * If it is too liquid, heat once more, or make a new batch

** You may buy a candy thermometer and heat the mixture to 260 °F.

Yet Another Way to Make Halawa Sweet

Some other forms and ingredients to make its preparation more easy, and its use more convenient, thaks to the astringent and soothing additives.

Ingredients

1- Clear Lemon Juice 1 cup

2- Sugar 5 cups

3- Water 1 cup

4- Apple Cider Vinegar Few drops

5- Alum powder A little

Method: Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan and put on a slow heat. Observe the the changes in color to guard against burning it. You should get something like honey in consistency, the color of which is golden brown.

How To Use Halawa To Remove Hair

 - Stretch the halawa onto your skin in the direction of hair growth - Press down firmly and pull back, jerking it off in one quick movement - Repeat until the skin area is free of all hair, this may require 3-4 times - For the first time, you may find it painful at the begenning - Try it after a shower so that the skin is free from any dust or foreign allergen - Do not use moisturizer before using halawa, it will make it more difficult - After finishing up, rinse the skin with cold or luke water to remove any remaining halawa - You can rub your skin - specially the face- with ice cubes - Redness is usual, don't worry - You can make a mask to use after you wax using halawa, using cold water, milk powder and talc powder. Paste the ingredients and put it on the skin until it dries up, then rinse with water

* The hair will grow finer and finer each time you use it

This Luipn seed permanent hair removal - does it work on it's own as the instruction state? Or is this in combination with sugaring?

I have been searching for years for a way to permanently remove hair without having to go to laser treatments. This is the first time I have seen anything that implies it is possible even.

Alum is potassium aluminum sulfate, or potash alum,it  is one form that has been used in food processing. It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a food additive, but in large quantities — well, an ounce or more — it is toxic to humans.

Yes you can use any type of vinegar, we need it just to slightly acidify.

Can you store this long term, and if so, how? Can you pour it on a baking sheet to cool, or on one of those new silicon baking sheets? About how much vinegar and alum should be added?

Hi Celtiphan, thanks for stopping by!

Yes you can store it by pouring onto a wrapping paper, a plastic container, a baking sheet or silicon baking sheets, and after it is cooled keep in the refrigerator.

Add a few drops of vinegar and 1/4 teaspoonful of alum powder.

Thank you for the reply. I did try making it last night, and was able to use it, but I think I am going to have to make a new batch as this one has become rock hard overnight! I have made sugar waxes before, but the recipe I used in the past was cooked until it was the color of gingerale, then stored in a container and reheated before application and required the use of paper or cotton strips to remove it. As I understand it, this one you just knead to warm it enough to smooth it onto your skin, then pull off without using paper or cotton, right? Last night, while I was using it, I just continued to knead the piece I had used, and reapplied it again and again until all the hair was removed, not something that could be done with the other recipe I had.

I like the fact that both are easy to clean up (and tasty if you make a mistake!), and you don't have to use any harsh chemicals to removed the residue.

Do you know where lupin seeds can be purchased? At a health food store, perhaps?

Thank you!

You are welcome.

Don't you find Lupin seeds in any grocery? if not go to a herbalist, although I think it should be available at stores selling beans and legumes.

I live in a small town without a lot of variety at the grocery stores. We do have a health food store, and my mother lives in a bigger town with more access to such. I will try that.

Am I right about how to use halawa - knead it to warm it, press it into the skin where hair removal is desired, and pull off without strips? Should it be stored in the refrigerator?

Hi, I tried making halawa according to your recipe today. I heated the ingredients together until they boiled then let it simmer for almost fifteen minutes but it never changed colour. now it is cooled and almost half the quantity of the original mixture and is still a clear thick syrup!

what happened?

elqalatawy  says:

Hi Sofmac,

Heat once more and let to cool and try it. If it doesn't work make a new batch but don't apply high flame to allow it to take the right consistency. You may reduce the water amount a bit.

Hi,

I tried to make the halawa wax according to the said quantity. The water contents seems more so I reduced the water in the middle and added more sugar but I never saw the light brown color and niether brown. I live in UK and the sugar here is very granulated almost powerded. is it because of that?

Help

Hi Zum,

The color is just an indication of the change occuring in the mixture and it is described according to the type of sugar used locally, the most important thing is the consistency which should be sticky.

Hi Anny,

It is supposed to work alone no matter the way of removing hair, yet traditionally people used to use both, you need to try.

Good luck.
