HAPPINESS AND POSITIVE THINKING

Category: Life

Almost on a daily basis I get a barrage of emails from friends and associates on the wisdom of positive thinking to make ones self happy. Most are chain emails which I wouldn't forward even if they came attached to a $100 bill. I delete all chains no matter what the subject as I do have the intelligence to decide what I deem to be funny enough or important enough to forward. Since I respect the individuality of each of my friends, I realized that all subject matter may not be what another wants.

Getting back to the 'positive thinking aspect of the emails received, here is one that I received today.....the subject being 'Happiness'

"I am more and more convinced that our happiness or our unhappiness depends far more on the way we meet the events of life than on the nature of those events themselves."

- Karl Wilhelm Von Humboldt

I know that these things are meant to 'inspire', but what I would truly like to know is who the author(s) are and have they ever been sick without medical, homeless, hungry, without money or the means to acquire money, like a job, etc.????? Should we expect people to be thrilled to meet these negative events in their lives and put aside the nature of those events? Tell me how anyone can be truly happy knowing that there are people in this world (some no further than our front doors) who are struggling; and are unhappy.

If the authors had any of the above or more to experience, would they be so positive? Maybe they haven't personally suffered, but someone they know or perhaps has seen has suffered and is unhappy. Can one be truly happy when there is so much sickness and sadness all around us? How can anyone experience true and complete happiness when another is deprived of that same emotion due to their suffering? When did we begin thinking that happiness is a personal commodity?

How many people in need do the author(s) merely ignore to create their own deception of happiness? We can never be happy as long as there is one person experiencing sadness thru conditions beyond their control, as we cannot be free until all experience freedom.

Positive thinking is a good concept, but it tends to bring apathy to the life of the one who thinks that everything is (or maybe, will be) OK. I believe that the thought process here is that if I don't see it, or I ignore it, it won't affect me. We shouldn't ignore it, for it is all around us. We should ask ourselves what we can do; how we can involve ourselves to bring happiness, wellness and peace of mind to all.

My philosophy is that a constant smile on ones face depicts a fool. Anger over life's injustices creates the need to do something, to get involved so that all might experience this happiness. What we need in the world are not positive thinkers but dreamers and doers. That is visionaries with a plan that would encompass all.

I thanked the person who forwarded the above quote to me as I now had a Fresh idea for this new blog. Remember "I'm OK, You're OK? My book would be titled "I'm Ok ONLY when You're OK".

My happiness will come only when I can see happiness on the faces of all. I guess that is to say that I will never experience that happiness in that lifetime as long as we are to willing to say that we make our own happiness and our own misery. Ask a child what he/she wants to be when they grow up; what would make them happy. I will guarantee that none will tell you that it would make them happy to be sick or poor or homeless!

Be a visionary.....Get involved......Get out of your self-constructed Comfort Zones....... Make a difference. Look around you. What you see should make you angry enough to Get Involved.

Oh, I just want to say I love your art! I do understand where you're coming from. It's hard to see sickeningly happy people flaunting their joy when you're feeling like there is so much bad going on in the world.

I am one of those people that one could perceive as bubbly. What I learned spending the bulk of my life angry and disgruntled with suffering is that my suffering will not actually help others. I just join them in misery.

I know - I'm considered a young buck, call me an idealist or optimist, but...

If I wait to be okay until all are okay, I cannot hold the light in the darkness. In giving myself permission to feel good and love myself, I am also offering that to others. Our thoughts are with us all of the time - they can be our friend... or foe.

I think that's the basis of "happy or positive" thinking ~ it's not to ignore the suffering, but offer hope. My time is spent being the best me for the benefit of myself and others. First off, my wonderful children.

Happiness cannot be put on like a garment. No one can give you a happiness suit., and it is not honest to pretend to be happy. I still enough of an optimist to think it CAN be found within. . . . and I hate those stupid happy emails.

Happiness to me is a state of mind. I bought a brand new car two years back and was careful to keep it in good clean condition (once in 2/3 month professional car wash etc....) Now I am coming to the real issue I parked my car instead of under covered shed which was a little away from my appartment to the closest legal parking as it was raining heavily. The next day morning when I went I saw a tree branch fall on windshield (and incidentally my insurance didn't cover it). So I was upset about it. Then I realized the thing that gave me happiness (my new car) is also the cause for unhappiness now. Hence I need to disassociate my happiness from external objects and focus on happiness internally....LOL

I agree, happiness I think is one of those things that is determined by what we are made of internally as humans rather than the external (i.e. material possessions). I think we have the capability to be happy or at least indifferent to negativity if we find ourselves in a position where we find it hard to be genuinely happy.

I agree with Rochelle, that Happiness cannot be put on like a garment. You can't put it on, but you can cultivate happiness in yourself. One of my friends use to say- If you a not in a good mood, fake it and you'll be surprised how soon your mood will change to better. Put a smile on your face (so what if someone might think that you are foolish?). It's easier to control your muscles than your brain, so muscle a smile. Your muscles will send an order to our brain. Your brain will release hormons of positivness, generated by smile. You'll feel the results.

If you think that you are responsible for all poor and unhappy in the world, keep saying this-

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can;and wisdom to know the difference.

I thank everyone for their comments. I must clarify that I am a very happy person. I realize that my happiness comes from within me. People that know me will say that they have not seen me have an unhappy day. This is due to the fact that I keep those emotions for times when I can be alone.

If I pass you on the street, you will always receive a smile from me. If you disagree with me, you won't get any argument. What you will get is my approval to think as you prefer, for I never argue.

The only thing I really can't stand is the always "bubbly" and up person. These are the people that I simply try to distance myself from, as they can be annoying. You can be happy without acting the fool. Thank you...................Lu
