HDTV TV Tuner Basics
62Soon, the whole world will be watching television in HDTV, which makes the HDTV TV tuner a necessity. HDTVÂ seems to be a magic term synonymous with electronics gadgets as projected in any news item or article appearing nowadays. If you were unaware, all this hype refers to the latest digital broadcasting format, High Definition Television. True to its name, this format has higher image resolution, thus providing you with realistic images and sounds.
An HDTV TV tuner has one basic ability: it can pick up packets (digitally encoded MPEG-2) from cable and free-to-air broadcasts. The HDTV tuner box then receives these packets. The problem is that the data will be lost completely if the data packets are not received correctly. An HDTV tuner is therefore significantly different from analog broadcasts, in that it either delivers it all, or nothing at all. With analog tuners, even faint signals can be received and shown onscreen, even though the picture quality will be very poor, producing the famous "snow" effect.
A couple of important features to look for in an HDTV TV tuner are that it should be able to utilize a PC processor, and it should receive cable QAM. Also you must understand how it deals with weak or multi-path signals. When buying an HDTV tuner cost is another significant factor.
Signals that are deflected by things such as cars and people are called multi-path signals. If this happens, ghost pictures occur when the signal reflection is of the analog variety. HDTVs, on the other hand, run the risk of loss of data owing to multi-path signals affecting their capturing signals. This means that packets will be lost, which will ultimately produce erratic pictures or a flickering screen.
A superior HDTV TV tuner will capture only stronger signals while ignoring the multi-path transmissions. Multi-path signals will be a significant problem for those who live where there are many obstacles. It may therefore be necessary to use an HDTV tuner that has a superior ability to filter multi-path signals.
Whether we like it or not, HDTV technology is here to stay. The problem is that there's so much HDTV stuff to choose from, it can be difficult figuring out what's essential and what's merely nice to have. Find out more about the choices in HDTV technology at Gizmos, Gadgets and Toys.
