Getting started with HO gauge railroad modeling
It is no wonder why every day more and more children and adults reveal
the amazing world of Model Railroading. Model Railroading gives you the
opportunity to simulate the real life experience of creating and
controlling the various railroading elements and scenes such as
locomotive behavior, switcher, barriers, lightning, sound effects,
visual effects (smoke, mist, snow etc) and many more. It is like being
a movie director.
The most common Railroading Model scales are: G
[1/22.5], N [1/160], O [1/48], HO [1/87], Z [1/220] Gauge unit
represents the measurement between the rails on the model track. The HO
gauge that is used for HO Scale model is 16.5mm
HO Gauge modeling is my favorite because:
- You can start building a HO gauge model on an affordable budget.
- The Ho Scale size is ideal because it is not too big to handle and decorate easily and it is small enough to fit in an average room
- There is wide variety of HO scale model elements such as locomotives, controllers, scenery elements and more.
To begin enjoying this amazing hobby of HO Gauge modeling follow these guidelines:
1. Start with a starter model kit - this is the best way to easily learn the HO Gauge basics and enjoy the experience of HO train modeling. Start with a relatively small starter kit. With small kit:
- You will get the sense of building and running the HO train model sooner.
- After you built the kit, if you feel that you prefer a different model train you didn't lose much time and you can still make a use of its ralroad parts and its electric devices.
- If you enjoy it you can expand it by obtaining additional HO model parts that you like.
How will you choose your first HO railroad starter kit?
- If you have friends that have already discovered this amazing hobby, ask them for advise. Consider obtaining a kit that is compatible with their kit because then you can exchange parts with your friends
- Go to a model railroad-oriented hobby shop, browse the different train model sets, absorb the variety of the HO train models. Ask the salesperson for a good quality HO Gauge model train set, you don't want the troubles that come with low quality models.
- Prefer an expandable model and DCC ready, this will give you the option to expand your first model.
2. Read it's layout dimensions and build it on appropriate plywood, this gives you the option to add scenery elements later.
3. Experience your new toy and feel what you would like to add to it.
Later I will give you ideas and "how to"s to enlarge and improve your first model.
Well don't just sit there, go ahead and get yourself a HO gauge model...
