Why Start With HO Model Trains?

Did you know that HO scale is half the size of O scale? HO stands for "half 0!"

And this is why collecting and building HO scale model trains is the most popular scale. It can be built in a confined space. Tight turns can be created and a more elaborate layout built in a smaller area. The models are big enough to be full of detail but small enough to operate a sizable layout.

HO scale has become more popular over the years and there is a large amount of HO scale model train running gear, automation and accessories available.

When i first started my HO model train layout I made the mistake of not planning the future of my layout. This resulted in me breaking down sections of my ho layout and rebuilding them to allow for my new ideas. This is part of the fun however.

I find my HO model trains an incredibly relaxing hobby and a great outlet for my creativity. No wonder they say that model trains are the best hobby in the world. I totally agree!

The modern technology has made model trains very exciting. Multiple trains can be controlled from 1 controller along with light activation, noises and smoke. All this adds to the realism of the layout.

Are you based in the US? I'm interested in which gauges are popular in which countries. You mentioned smoke effects, do any manufacturers produce an HO train with live steam or equivalent (like Hormby in the UK)?

Thanks for a great article BTW.

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I have a HO scale 2-6-0 steam loco & tender, both cast with metal wheels & trucks. One of the trucks on the tender broke (cast metal). Should I try to repair it with contact cement or buy a new one? If you know where I can get a new one the engine has "Thomas Rogers" on the side of the boiler and 61 on the cab. The tender has "Chicago and Rock Island" on the side of it. I'm not sure if the loco is new or old. All it has on the bottom of the engine is "New One", then the next line "Model", and under that "Yokyo Japan".

Any help would be appreciated. My email is - zacklucas@sbcglobal.net. Thanks again
