THE PROBLEM

The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that 68% of those who use illegal drugs hold down jobs, either on a full or part time basis. People who abuse drugs cost employers countless dollars through excessive absenteeism, decreased productivity during assigned work hours, more liklihood of involvement in work related accidents while on the job, and a larger number of claims for workers compensation overall.

Who Abuses Alcohol or Drugs at Work?

Substance abusers on the job may be difficult to identify, because the average worker does not want to accuse coworkers of drug abuse. Signs are available; however, for those who wish to stop the nonproductivity and destruction caused by substance abuse within the work environment. Substance Abuse tends to form patterns in abusers, easily recognized by those who are aware of what those patterns usually are.

Excessive Absenteeism

Substance Abusers miss work, and they do so often. One red flag for substance abuse is absenteeism on Fridays, Mondays, or directly proceeding or after holiday leave. Substance abusers wish to begin partying early, and tend to do so a little longer than originally planned. Substance Abusers are actually really sick more often, and are more likely to miss work due to legitimate illness, than non alcohol or drug abusing staff.

Nonproductivity

Substance Abusers suffer from hangovers, depression, anxiety, and general lack of motivation on the job. They often experience poor concentration, irritability, and confusion during regular work hours. Other substance abuse related problems such as family disagreements and financial difficulties also cause stress and distraction at work. Some substance abusers actually abuse substances while on the job, causing them to be even less productive for their employers while they are present at work.

Accident Proned

Substance abusers are more likely to be involved in work related accidents, and more likely to file claims for workers compensation. They are often not as focused as non-substance abusers, and may even be physically and emotionally impaired on the job. Substance abuse while operating heavy equipment can be especially dangerous; however, any substance abuse related accident is costly to employers in terms of loss of productivity and absenteeism.

Difficulty Getting Along with Others

Substance Abusers are frequently irritable and overly sensitive. They often do not feel well and have little tolerance or patience for the typical workday routine. In some cases they may even become openly confrontive or physically violent on the job. Legal problems are also common among workers who abuse both legal and illegal substances, due to attempts to drive while intoxicated and drug possessions arrests, as well as the company they generally keep while abusing drugs and/or alcohol.

Help is Available

It is important to understand that most undesirable behaviors of substance abusers will cease if they seek and obtain help for their substance abuse problem. If you suspect someone on your job is abusing substances, either confront the individual directly, or report the situation to your direct supervisor. In doing so, you will not only be helping the person involved, but also assisting with keeping your workplace safe, productive, and drug free.
